reason for using opiates and benzos?

if this is drug culture material, send it there. here is a quote from someone in the cannabis forum that got me thinking.

http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=168435&r=15
"You people are blindly missing the reason behind this, but I'm not surprised since most of you like drugs that are simple and elevate the mood, it shows what kind of person you are.
Ever wonder why people who get intense anxiety from cannabis are hard drug addicts? The anxiety is simply the cannabis showing/telling you that you are not being who you should be and is surfacing the insecurities that you use hard drugs to escape from. People are so rushed and egotistical nowadays that they look on cannabis as a bad thing, although it is infact the exact opposite, a life giver."

how many of you abuse opiates and benzos to cover up an aspect of your life that you can't face normally? better yet, how common is recreational use of these drugs in normal healthy lives? it seems that if i had no anxiety, a successful life, etc. i would have no reason to use these drugs. a few of my other friends that i know use to block out pain from past relationships/family problems for example, or current depression they're having. i am guilty of this also. i'm ashamed of how i've turned out. i personally can't deal with the anxiety and depression i have. opiates are the only thing that have saved me. who here agrees with what this guy had to say?

Strangely enough (given the fact that i hate weed for all of those paranoia reasons from hard drugs), I agree with this statement. And yes, I recognize the fact that i use drugs to cover up things i dont like about myself. Although sometimes, I really think that I use them to cover up the static in my head that tells me that I should not like certain things about myself (if that makes sense). Yes, weed makes my subjective being a lot more vivid, but there's a lot of things about my mentality that I wish were not so vivid.

Pretty accurate assessment

I think that the original statement is a fairly accurate assessment of the difference between the two. My short affair with smack came at a point in my life where work and relationship issues had both taken a turn for the worse. I now only tend to use opiates to deal with physical pain (although in some circumstances, the pain perveived is no-where near bad enough to justify opiates), and avoid heroin altogether, as I know how effective it is at holding lifes problems at a distance (for a while!).

Then again, I've seen heavy daily cannabis users who smoke for exactly the same reason (to distance themselves from reality). They seem to prefer hash though, as it produces a much more heavy, sedated effect than smoking flower-heads.

I don't think the use of one precludes the use of the other, as I've discovered (the hard way) that I really like opiates, yet when it comes to cannabis, I much prefer freshly dried skunk types, sometimes with a small dose of amphetamine to produce an almost trippy state. I think that the choice is dependant upon the state of play of everything else in my life:

Best example - when I found a lump in my groin where the lymph gland is, and ended up being referred to an oncology unit of the hospital, I went for several months where I wouldn't even think about cannabis. Soon as I got the results that it wasn't a malignancy (was a resistant bacterial infection from cutting knee open on barbed wire in a field), and life was good again, cannabis was a lot more appealing and opiates/benzos lost a lot of their appeal to me

^^^ I think those heavily daily cannabis users you speak of just haven't tried other drugs or found another one they like, otherwise they would probably become a daily user of that. I say this because I use to be one of them till I discovered opiates.. then it never made sense to waste time with weed.

Anyway there was a point in my life where I was using dope daily (before that pot) and yes it was a pretty low point in my life (not because of the dope, because of already existing conditions). I know I used it for an escape then.

Now I use very "recreationally" only about 2-4 bags every two weeks or so. I got past the rough spot in my life and came to a realization that I didn't need to keep goin on how I was with the dope. I'll be honest tho, if my living conditions didn't change where they now impede my dope supply it prolly would have taken me alot longer to stop or get it down to where I am now... if ever..

I dont agree with his statement that cannabis is "showing you your not being the person your meant to be" is what causes your anxiety. Thats a rather unfounded and unprovable decleration. I think it would be much safer to say that the pot is simply "not agreeing" with your pysiology at the time. I know whenever I smoke pot now I get awful anxiety and I had been using for 2 years straight before a several month break. And I'm not even that heavy of a drug user anymore.. just my every two weekl dose of h (I know to some that does seem like heavy drug use however.). He is right in saying weed is demonized by society.. thats for sure. If theres any illicit drug which shouldn't be, its pot. I don't know about the life giver bit but the rest I think is right on...

I wonder if thats true. I feel anxious on weed, sometimes, but nor enough for it to characterize my stoned state.

As far as hard drugs goes, I take 2ce and salvia, klonopin, adderall, and xanax pretty regularly. The adderall and k-pins are pretty much just for studdying though. I dont really think of any of these as hard drugs, i guess, but some of my friends do.

i've smoked cannabis sativa/indica chronically for 16 years now, and do it for the same reason every day, relaxation, to slow the mind, and to simply enjoy things better, playing a videogame sober is nowhere as enjoyable as it is stoned...cleaning the house is a total bore, unless i get stoned and crank up some music, cannabis has caused me to have anxiety and panic attacks, but simply cause i was TOO stoned, if there is such a thing.. I have been through ALL of the hard drugs, and none of them compelled me to use as continously as cannabis has... even opiates, i kicked a 2 gram a day morphine habit, cold turkey, after a year of it, and still find solice in smoking marijuana... I DO NOT drink, and despise alcohol, in my opinion, alcohol should be under prohibition, and marijuana legalized, I hate to say it, but i've never been attacked by a pothead, but i've had the SHIT scared out of me by a few drunks....

well, hard to admit, but the statement the OP quoted is right about me, I do use certain kinds of drugs for certain benefits, for example, i'm not the kinda guy that finds it easy to flirt with gils in pubs or partys, not because of my bad looks(that are not that bad), but because of my insecurities about believing i'm boaring as hell and stuff like that, I would have continued this interesting conversation, but my english sucks.

I never was much of a pothead. Sure there was a point in my life where I was stoned off of some very high quality kb for a few months...but that was because of customers, if you get my drift.

I started selling pot the day I started smoking pot. I didn't really like being high as often as I was, but it paid. I quit selling, and ive been high less then 3 times since.

I use "hard" drugs because I just happen to enjoi them more. Sometimes I use for fun, for the situation, to help sleep, but sometimes it can take the edge off of some really unbearable stuff in your life. As an escape? Sometimes you have no choice and you can't "escape" whether you'd like to or not. But instead of stressing over something that WILL happen, or your not sure how it will happen but you know it's gonna happen, it lets your mind off of stressing whatever it is that bothers you.

I think that guy is very wrong, and he really has no idea what he is talking about maby becuase he has been smoking to much weed...I used hard drugs becuase they gave a differnt effect that weed did. not becuase I wanted to escape the "pains of life". having to escape the pains of life comes after you start using hard drugs. thats what fucks things up.

This is so subjective - you can debate this up and down forever and never get anywhere. People use different drugs for different reasons. Whether it be to lower their inhibitions, or use it deal with stressors in life, or maybe they just enjoy the high. And whatever someones reason or reasons are for using such and such a drug, someone else may have the same reasons, but they enjoy drug x over drug y - just preference.

it just seems to me that if i didn't have such a stressful life, benzos or opiates would not be appealing at all to me. i think there are certain factors in ones life that might allow hard drugs to be more attractive to some.

and this is coming from someone who can't even taper down a 1/4mg every 2-4weeks. how lame... do you want someone to hold your hand to help you to? i guess they aren't so much better after all, are they vicodelicious? who cares if you thought my topic was dumb, why respond to this if you have nothing to say?

OOO, burn. Sorry, I shouldn't have replied. You're right.

Oh and F-U, benzo withdrawal ain't easy son....

since when are benzos "hard drugs" ???

Oh my god... I have a feeling that if I say anything at all, I'll be met with a response like: "80 mg oxy is a hard drug! Benzos are pussy shit!" Then someone else will say: "80 mg oxy? Pffffff.... it's all about shooting heroin all day, that's harder than anything." Then someone will shut the whole block down by claiming to be addicted to using bleach enemas (to get REALLY fucked up!)

Listen, guy, get addicted to benzos for a year or two or three, try to quit... see how long it takes... then come and holler back (If it hasn't killed you). :p

It sounds like this guy made a gross generalization, i dont' believe that this guy did the appropriate research to conclude such a thing. I do use hard drugs but i also smoke herb, there have been plenty of times where i got anxious from smoking but that was not attributed to any prior drugs use. I think herb enchances the way you feel before you smoke, so if your bummed getting high will probally leave you bumed and vice versa. People use 'hard drugs'(if there is such a catagory,as alcohol is as hard as anything else), mainly because they're more fun. There are people that use opiate or booze to escape from their miserable lives, but there are also just as many as don't.

Personally, during an extremely dark time in my life heroin saved me, from the stress, panic, and despair, without dope being there as my crutch when i fell, i don't know if i wouldnt of killed myself. Then wounds heal and you eventually have to stop relying on the crutch and move on, so now i use dope as much as any otherdrug, not often.

well then i guess its better to avoid the term "hard drugs" if there is no universal definition for it, or at least if you cant provide one yourself... otherwise people wont really know what youre talking about since most people have different understandings of the term.

so then any drug that has bad withdrawal is a hard drug or what? maybe you should be more direct than saying "get addicted to this then you'll understand" and acting like a smart ass. i made my remark because i honestly never seen benzos referred to as hard drugs.

looking at this thread, it seems that the only non-hard-drug is marijuana?
