I take drugs, as a whole, because they feel good...they work. Plain and simple. Same reason I started smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol or eating chocolate or doing anything: enjoyment. After taking any drug for more than a few days, I feel worse than when completely sober. When I am sober I feel excellent, and am much nicer to others, but bored. Maybe I just need to find a hobby or something. If I had a ton of money I would do no drugs, because buying shit is what I enjoy most, even more than drugs.
I took Adderall (and now Dexedrine) because it makes the day less boring, since college is kind of boring just going to class everyday, and because it helps me pay attention in class/do better on work. I guess that's called "ADHD" in medical terms. I've taken many benzos because I had to take the edge off the Dexedrine when staying up all night or taking high amounts. Opioids feel great, that's why I take them sometimes. I just like that feeling of laying down on the couch watching TV and nodding off. I rarely take them, however. Somethings, like cocaine and meth, I've done just to say I did them. Also, once you've been smoking weed (or doing anything for long periods of time) you get tired of the feeling, and want something new. That's another reason why I have done most drugs on my "resume".
I guess these all would be called "hard drugs", but none of them decrease my mental capacity/productivity like marijuana. It gives me anxiety sometimes, but that's because I always mix it with Dexedrine so that's normal. I quit smoking weed because I got tired of it, after smoking almost daily for 2+ years it gets old. I also couldn't pay attention and procrastinated too much. Everybody has anxiety, they just handle it in different ways. That's why there are so many alcoholics: anxiety, not genetics.
So it's more of boredom, rather than any personal insecurities, that gets me to take drugs. I've never had any real problems in my life whatsoever, except maybe a dog dying, the normal bad test grade, and whatnot. Maybe that's why my brother and I never get addicted to anything and most of the people we know who have done the same stuff as us are. That's also another reason I used to do so much shit, because I thought no reason was as good of an excuse as any. Well, I am addicted to cigarettes, which are in a different category because they don't effect your life like stronger things do (until you get cancer), but I'm quitting this Christmas break...
