Opioids Raw opium

When I backpacked India I hired a driver for the north part, anyway Rajasthan. He bought raw opium from a tea seller about 1/2 a match box and offer me some, I declined, he said “better hit for me than the hash I was smoking” he nibbled on it and stopped for the rest. Yes he had sweet milky tea all the time, but all Indians do, never thought about it. I used to be jealous of his zen states listening to his music 🎧

Which country?
United States. I understand now you thought I was referring to an actual pill. What they sold back then were small lumps off a large brick of opium. I forget what the weight of them was but it was common to buy a small piece for the same price as a dime bag and smoke it with cannabis. I assumed suppliers running it into the country changed when the war on terror started because I only saw it before 9/11. It became impossible to source at all after the second Iraqi war started (well in the weeks running up to it). Once local supplies were exhausted I never saw it again. A lot of people claimed they still had it but all they ever had was the "Red Rock Opium" which was just some crap they were buying at Wal-Mart and trying to pass off to teenagers as the real deal.

The one time I saw a small brick of it the brick was about the same size as a cigarette case but thicker. It had a scorpion stamped in to it. I assumed that was some cartel marking or something. I'm pretty sure it was coming in with the Mexican brick weed because the weed in the local area changed around that same time. I only saw the brick that one time because my weed dealer showed it to me and was trying to get me to purchase it. I was buying weight from him back then. I can't remember what he wanted to charge me for it but I do remember that I was tempted to buy it but it was more money than I had in my pocket at the time and I didn't think I'd be able to flip it to make it worth my time.

There was a 2-3 month period of time around 9/11 when you couldn't purchase weed. There was none around then it started coming back around again but you could tell it was from a different source than before. Prices changed to which was a big tip off that it was coming in from some place else than it was before along with the slight bump in quality.

I know heroin was around in those days but I never saw any until the pharma pills became expensive around 2011/2012. It started creeping back into the area after that but it was always east coast powder. There was some tar heroin but you had to drive many hours to get it and it wasn't as common as powder heroin even down there. I assume someone was going out of state on their own to get it. From what I've read about the heroin trade there was an agreement between the Mexicans and the other factions not to sell in each other's territory. People out west got the tar and we got the powder.

The old opium we had here back in the day was very different from the tar heroin I've seen. The tar heroin looked darker in color and was more sticky/gooey. The opium we used to get was more brownish and was always in this solid compressed lump. It was more dense and hard. It wouldn't stick to your fingers as much as the tar heroin would. It didn't burn/smoke as easily.

I wish I would have known back then that you could take the opium orally. I imagine we wasted a ton of it smoking it in joints and bowls. I never got a hard nod off of it but whenever we smoked it it was always being shared between multiple people. We never bought enough to really get nodded out on it. It was just a once in awhile treat.

Plus by the time I started getting introduced to opioids proper we could buy all the pharma grade stuff we wanted really cheap. Sucking the juice out of morphine patches was popular for awhile when those were still common. Then soon after we all found out that our parents were holding endless amounts of Hydrocodone and Oxycodone tablets. So those were basically free since people would raid their parent's medicine cabinets and give them away. They were so cheap people wouldn't even bother to pick them up if they dropped one. Then after that came the old OC 80s and Opanas. They were really cheap too. I guess opium never came back around because there wasn't a market for it anymore in this area because the pharma industry had moved in and priced everyone else out. No point in trying to look for opium and heroin when you could call anyone and have pharma grade opioids within the hour.

One of my hopes in life is I'll eventually travel overseas and get to stumble upon an old school opium smoking den. I've always wanted to try smoking it in the old fashion and getting to hang out in a smoker's den. I'm sure there are still some around but they're all probably too far away from where I currently live or too exclusive for me to gain access to one. I'd really like to get my hands on some proper heroin again but from what I've seen it's a fools errand to go looking for any on the street now. I doubt anyone still sells it. From what I've heard it's all fent and a mix of other substances being passed off as heroin these days. I honestly prefer morphine to everything else in the opioid family but heroin was a very close second. I always called it user friendly morphine but I'll admit I mainly called it that because heroin has more of a stigma attached to it than morphine does.

Anyway, I mainly chimed in to say at one point in my life real opium was around and sold pretty cheaply in America. But since 2001-2002 or so it vanished from the market all together and never came back around again. If I had to guess that was probably around the time the Mexican cartels stopped bothering with trying to ship it north and making tar heroin out of it instead. Which I understand. More profit for less risk (less weight to send over). Well that and the fact that opioids were suddenly legal and widely available even to high school children starting in the mid-late 90s.

I do know in our area of the county heroin was a big problem around the tail end of the 1970s into the early 1980s. But for whatever reason it fell out of style and the only users by the time I started coming of age were people that had already been needle junkies for decades at that point. Local law enforcement really cracked down on it during the war on drugs and it vanished from the local area. It mostly got replaced with cocaine and later crack in this area. The old timers I've talked to said it was really hard to score H without traveling out of town during the late 80s up until the early 2000s. Most of them switched over to pharma opioids and the few that kept on using the needle had some connection where they'd go pick it up once a month or so and buy their supply in bulk. One of those deals where you already had to be looped in to be part of it because there wasn't enough for everyone and the few people still around doing it didn't want to bring any attention to their own supplier.

Opium was sold pretty openly when I first started buying cannabis in my home town. Most every weed dealer had a little bit around and they'd often smoke some with you for free or offer to sell you some. Which is why my friends and I would buy a little of it from time to time before we got introduced to pharma opioids.

Thank you for the time you took to explain that. That is super interesting. I’ve been an on and off (mostly on) heroin user for over a decade and I’ve always used tar because that’s what was (still is to an extent) in my area. It still pops up on the street here once in a while but it’s always here if you look hard enough. It never fully went away is just weirdly became a more niche item. Weirdly almost on like the niche level of ketamine which is so weird to me. It’s a toss up which one I could find first. I eventually just started going off in onionland because it never dries up for more than a few weeks. I miss the pharma days, that’s where I first started

Better take it orally. If you have no tolerance then even a small amount will knock you sideways and be much more efficient weight for weight than trying to evaporate it.

Totally right, @TheUltimateFixx
But the guy (or gal) literally asked:
I’m quite curious about how well opium runs on foil
So, I just explained him/her how opium behaves on foil, both in its raw and/or refined form, just answering that question.
But, as you know me better than others-, you know that I allways advise using the oral route, the one I use myself in the rare ocasions that I got some opium.

I wish I would have known back then that you could take the opium orally. I imagine we wasted a ton of it smoking it in joints and bowls.
I get you, cause being young I also had the hellbent idea of smoking opium, wasting the stuff on fucking foil... anyway, mistakes are there for us to learn, aren't they

I can't tell as I ain't no "expert", but there is a guy called Steve Martin who is (was) one of the few westerner opium smoker that really knows what is he talking about. There is an interview with him in Collectors Weekly that is a very interesting read (he was a opium antiques collector) and he also has a book telling his story.
He says that the last operative opium den that he used to visit was in Laos but it closed during the first years of this century. Maybe some den still exists, who knows...
On the other hand, in Iran opium smoking is indeed a thing, and you could be invited by locals... but I don't really know how safe it would be for an american citizen to be involved in anything drug related.

@Señor Moreno

haha I know all about Steve Martin. For anyone interested, he wrote a whole book about his experiences with opium, how he first got intrigued to try it from collecting antique paraphernalia etc.
It's called 'Opium Fiend : A 21st century slave to a 19th century addiction'.

Funnily enough I learned my technique from a fellow student at university. He was from Laos and his uncle had been running one of the few remaining opium dens before they were made illegal.

By far the best way to use raw opium is to eat it on an empty stomach. Follow it up with some hot, sweetened tea to help it dissolve quickly, and the increase in blood sugar will help get things started.

I have smoked raw opium, take straight from a plant and dried, but its a big waste compared to eating it. Plus you have to smoke a lot of it (it isnt like tar heroin, where a few hits will get you high). Eating half a gram of raw opium will get you way higher than smoking half a gram.
Can confirm. I tried smoking it and unless you know how to process it over an open flame and have an opium pipe like aparatus EAT IT
Plugging it works if you cook it up in acid

Plugging it works fine even without acid, but the duration of effects are much shorter than eaten
