Over the past few years, I've noticed a rise in the frequency of references to MDMA or ecstasy pills in popular hip-hop music. Is this just because MDMA is becoming more popular or are rappers being paid to promote it? It's akin to product placement. Luxury liquor and clothing brands regularly pay rappers to mention their goods, so why not MDMA manufacturers/distributors too?

I know that rappers advocate drug use in general, but I think MDMA is a different situation. For example, rappers reference weed all the time but I doubt they're being paid to do it by any specific group because the marijuana market is so large and diffuse. I'm sure that rap music increases the overall demand for weed, but it would be hard for any one specific group to realize a significant rise in profits.

However, the MDMA supply market is much more concentrated. Most product now comes from "superlabs," of which there are only a handful in the world. Fewer players in the production/distribution business means that the profit potential for each one increases greatly when overall demand rises. Therefore, I think it would be completely reasonable for an international drug syndicate to pay/bribe (obviously indirectly) major rappers to advocate their product.

This is all just speculation, so I might be completely wrong. I'm interested to hear other peoples take on the matter. I know that this topic doesn't directly relate to pharmacology or harm reduction, but I think its important to explore the factors affecting demand for a drug.

Very interesting theory my friend.

Personally I think the rapper is using the drug promotion to sensationalise their own music.

However do you have a link you might be able to add in your post so we can hear exactly what kind of reference you mean.

If they are just saying MDMA then probably not but if they are screaming bomb 250 who knows :D

Ive recently noticed this too.But its all the bad rappers and if you think about it molly is a simple word thats easy to rhyme. Because lets face it they all suck ive never heard one of them say mdma and prob dont know what it is. The word "molly" is cool now so thats why they do it i think.

And ive seen "thugs" roll. they drink all night pop beans and do coke. Horrible way to properly roll. And not to mention theyre popping shit pills and "molly"

They never call it "MDMA". That would be way too hard to rhyme with. They call it pills, beans, thizz, molly, etc.

Rappers occasionally mention specific pill presses. I've heard blue dolphins referenced in multiple songs. The most recent example that I can think of is in the recent chart-topping hit "Mercy" by Kanye West, 2 Chainz, and Pusha T.

In Pusha T's verse:
I'm bill dropping Ms. Pacman, this pill popping-ass ho
I'm popping two, these blue dolphins, need two coffins

Then later in the song, Kanye raps:
Something about Mary, she gone off that Molly
Now the whole party is melted like Dalí

Regardless of any potential kickbacks, rappers still advocate irresponsible MDMA abuse.

In "Pop That" by French Montana, Rick Ross, and Drake, they also make several references.

French Montana:
Three beans, I’m on that
We pop a molly, she buss it open

Rick Ross:
I’m the life of the party
Let's get these hoes on the Molly

It seems that rappers are all about feeding women pills just to fuck them.

lol... like this is some new occurrence. This has been happening since 2000... the only difference was, back then, they weren't posers and actually "popped thizz"

All these entertainers (read: not rappers) are just using "Molly" in their lyrics due to the surge in popularity it's received in the past year... they're all as fake as old ass Madonna

LOL
"Your word is, Hyphy"
"Can you use it in a sentence?"
"Me and my homies popped purple pills and went hyphy at the side show"

I think its just a response to what's going on in clubs. MDMA is making a huge comeback.

mdma is not making a huge comeback. mdma is rare as hell in the united states. now RC molly(methylone, mdpv, mephedrone) and bunk piperazine pills however, ARE becoming popular. 90% of these gangsters and whiteboy "thugs" are selling complete garbage and honestly dont even know what mdma stands for or that its the ingredient in "ecstasy". im sure the actual celebrity rappers could find the real thing, i doubt kanye is rolling on cutouts, but the vast majority of the listeners dont even know what ecstasy is and would think theyre "rolling" on BZP. i could go on about this subject for hours but ill just say a few more words and get on with my day..... yes, ive seen rappers exploit the club scene lately by mentioning "molly" in "da club" and whatnot, just like ive seen every run-of-the-mill "artist" like brittney spears and rihanna and christina aguilera use house beats and all of a sudden have become djs, just like every goddamn commercial has dubstep in the background. its just all the posers and record executives exploiting our underground culture for profit or "cool points". when theyve raped our scene and squeezed every last drop of profit from us theyll go away, leaving the scene in disrepair. ive seen it before with other subcultures too. "club" shit is just the flavor of the week atm and we will continue to see mosh pits at edm events and hear dubstep on toyota camry commercials.. what a country.

Weed is the most popular drug to rappers that is why they sing about it because they enjoy it so much and also posession of weed is a lot smaller than posession of amphetamines, it would be idiotic for an MDMA cook to pay a rapper to promote their drug because they will just get caught as u said there are only a handful around so it would not be hard for the DEA to track down where as there are a ton of weed growers which makes it impossible for the DEA.

So far all the lyrics quoted point to generaic terminology being used for MDMA or pills.

If all of a sudden a particular rapper started spewing "mint", "pokeball" or "defqon" then maybe some kind of dealer sponsorship might be a plausable theory.

I think for now we can just assume the drug is being used for sensationalism designed to sell records nothing more.

I am not convinced however that we think none of these rappers can get good product. If the media are to beleive arent most of them either ex drug dealers or funded by drug dealers? If so I would assume getting dcent MDMA or pills wouldnt be too difficult.

Mdma got me feelin like a champion
In the city, never sleeps, don't forget the ambien -jay z

Thry rap about what people wanna hear about... I don't think anyone is hitting them up for endorsements beyond simply being their dealer and hooking themup good stuff...

Some rappers are drug dealers.. but so are some bankers, cops, construction workers, etc...
