I wouldn't put such a bizarre approach past them, though they'd balk at the amount of sick pay they'd have to hand over.
Under normal circumstances I'd have rung in sick or been sent home upon my arrival, but I had a backlog of stuff to deal with and I've got to step into the breach later and cover for some of the customer service people as well as doing my own job. And believe me, it's only under extreme duress that they'd ever allow me to deal with customers over the phone.
