i lived in about 8/9 gaffs in one year once sorta sofa surfing/homeless type existence pretty shitty time to be honest , was about 15years ago but still i am unlikely to forget.

It must be nice to know that you've got that many people looking out for you though mate :) I always wondered how people end up homeless, i'm guessing many of them are through choice or they've exausted everyone in the world who would give them the time of day?

i do a bit of outreach with the homeless, there are loads of ways. some sadly feel they have no other choice, some exhaust everyone around them by making sure their wife and kids keep a roof over their heads first, and yeah, some will have exhausted all their options in other ways. in the winter the people on the streets are either very very unlucky or have stayed out on purpose- once frost hits at night huge efforts are made to accommodate everyone, the people we find then are usually trying their best not to relapse into addiction and feel that there is too much temptation in the accommodation offered.

Ah nothing like a crsis at work on Friday afternoon to take my mind off meeting of possible impending doom this evening. *shoots self in face*

This makes a lot of sense. I can see how you could fall on hard times and prioritise your family, but being on the streets seems like a sure fire way of relapsing to stay warm and happy compared to say a hostel surely?

Thankfully I've never ended up in one but from people I've known over the years I'd say 'warm and happy' is unfortunately not an accurate description of the occupants of most hostels out there.

Crisis and impending doom? Doesn't sound like you've got the Friday feeling there. At all.

i've stayed in Hostels about6 in al 5 i had my own room kinda medium stay the other a proper homeless dorm stayed their 3 nights n went back on the street ,

Even the long stay ones are just pits of despair depression & drug dealing/taking oh n prostitution. IME

thank you brimz, and thank you for offering a better insight than i ever could into why you'd risk frostbite rather than stay in a hostel if you're trying to stay in recovery, as i have to say it wasn't 100% clear to me either.

That's pretty much exactly what I've heard. One of my mates lasted a night before his door went in. He was quite a streetwise guy who could look after himself too.

Hostels sound like truly rotten environments... why don't they have a seperate 'clean' section for those who want to sort things out a bit to transfer to?

they are calle3d "dry Houses mate n are usually go in hand with a Community Drug treatment order ,
they can piss you anytime n you will get kicked out sometimes if its positive

, i've never stayed in one but have lots of mates that have , i been round one for a cuppa like , no drugs at all , no benzos nothing in some of these.

Although their are some cough /cough "dry houses8("

btw i've probably spent about 2 years in hostels n a year of sofa surfing /homeless

i suspect that the powers that be would feel that doing that would condone drug use, which is of course so much worse than being so ignorant of it that people are put off your service because of it. hopefully there are a few forward thinkers out there who might take a more realistic stance regardless. edit- ah beaten to it with an actual answer by brimz.

been so stressed about my talk that i'd pretty much ignored the fact i'm having a week long jolly in cairo afterwards. been checking out the this virtual tour. what an amazing city, can't wait!!!!

my heads been keeping it quiet!!! totally overshadowed by the talk i have to give in spain. then got into a thought pattern a bit like 'i'd rather die than give this talk...' last night so started trying to make a concerted effort to think about stuff AFTER the talk, and it fookin worked!! i was wise to choose that week to book it, knew i'd be stressed if my contribution to the workshop was accepted.

now i really really want to see cairo in all its awesomeness so will have difficulty convincing myself i want to die before goign. its expensive to get there though- 300 quid, luckily i have free accommodation courtesy of a friend who i haven't seen in nearly 3 years.

One tip for going Egypt, only ever drink bottled water. And check the seal on bottles you might buy from a bar aswell, like don't let them serve it out the bottle, make sure you get the bottle and open it yourself.

Don't worry, I can't shoot spells anymore if that's any consolation. I'm a pariah among the wizard community. Shame.
