tall-red-perennial-poppies-800x800.jpg

ive read that they are poisonous if you ingest them but they have a narcotic sap , so whats the difference between them and the opium poppy ... does the sap actually have a narcotic use or not ?

*note these are not the ones i was talking about earlier these are ones ive been seeing for about a week now

i know that but what im saying is if you look at the source i posted it says the sap from them has a narcotic use

i wonder what they can be used for

Oriental Poppy
This classic red or orange poppy, also called Papaver orientale, is originally from Asia. It came to Europe in the early 18th century as an ornamental flower. Oriental poppies grow to be up to 3 feet tall and come in a wide variety of colors besides red. Gardeners may choose pink, white or spotted poppies. These plants are poisonous when ingested and can be grown for their narcotic sap. Oriental poppies tend to die back in midsummer, resuming growth in the fall.

Can't find anything on oriental poppy sap, but what I did find is that they're closely related to Papaver bracteatum, which contains thebaine (but no morphine).

The source may be confused.

yeah this shit can get so confusing cos one site will show one thing as an opium poppy where others show it as a non opium poppy .. thankfully im getting past the identifying problems at last

then one site says one has opium and another will say it hasnt .. bloody annoying trying to get a proper answer

my patch of papavers are doing nicely, can't waiting for a long summer=D

are there any thing apart from honey to take the taste away.;)

I whizz them in a blender with grapefruit juice and sugar.

Still fuckin rank mind.

Yes smackcraft there is loads of nonsense and hearsay on the net.

The only ones you will find to be useful are somniferums, other poppies contain some alkaloids but I really don't think it's worth bothering, might be wrong alkaloids, or just in too low concentrations.

I can't imagine the somniferums will be coming up in Scotland yet, specially not flowering, can you get a pic of the ones you suspect to be somniferums?

i was trying to think of a way to take a photo to post earlier but my nokia that i have the transfer cable for is screwed and the other mobile i have has no cable or credit to upload them ..

it has been extremely sunny here the past week until today if that would make a difference ?

but i actually hope you are right that they are not ready to come out here and that i will get a shock one day and see loads of them lol

few photos, just off google like

here's a few pics of the heads and the whole plants, and a few of the foliage.

Note the SMOOOOOTHness, the light colouring of the foliage.

The buds nod down before flowering, after flowering the pods will stand upright, you see the more bluetinged pods? They are near ready.

I'l try and find some pics of young plants, not flowering yet.

There's enough thebaine in Papaver bracteatum to make it worthwhile for the US government to grow them for synthesis of oxy and the likes. Sadly it's not a recreational drug at all and pretty darn toxic.
