question: favourive book? (merged)

you probably already read it, but my favourite book of all time is Alice in Wonderland
it's so imaginative it's amazing
and it's not just for children ohh noo
also junkie by william burroughs is great too

Most of Charles Bukowskis novels are great. If you just want a sample of his writings, then try some of the short stories collected in "tales of ordinary madness" or "South of no north"...Great stuff I tell ya!

Regards, -Psyko

Farseer Trilogy and Tawny Man Trilogy by Robin Hobb.
I read them over and over and over and over....
She's the kind of author who can give you book orgasms,
you know the ones: "omg omg i cant believe this its just so intense OMG!!!!"
Wise Child by Monica Furlong. Beautiful book, its my version of a comforting hug.
Kushiel's Dart by Jaqueline Carey, its so sensual sexy and cool.
Anything by Kahlil Gibran... esp The Beloved (Reflections on the Path of the Heart). he is so so great and romantic.
Those are my all time favourites.

Robin Hobb is someone I've been trying to get around to for years!!

Kahlil Gibran is a great writer. I love his writing style -- so spiritual, yet very modern and pragmatic. 8o

A Scanner Darkly by Phillip K. Dick. I'd recommend it to any blue lighter, A good exciting quick read.

Its about an undercover drug detective in the future, I dont want to give much away but I'd highly recomend it.

Also any of Phillip K Dick's novels are great, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Is a classic as well, its the book that Blade Runner was based off of.

Guns Germs and Steel, by Jared Diamond. It's a short history of everybody over the last 13,000 years and asks why it is that history evolved at different rates in different parts of the world. A fascinating read which completely dispels any notions that racial differences can explain it...

my favorites:
the perks of being a wallflower by stephen chbosky
anything by charles bukowski

runners-up:
kafka
naked lunch by burroughs
acid house by irvine welsch
alice in wonderland
the stranger by camus
fight club by chuck palahniuk
douglas coupland
geek love by katherine dunn

Sci-fi: the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov is one of the best IMO.

Non Fiction:

"Mr Nice" autobiography by Howard Marks, whose life story (as the biggest British cannabis smuggler of the 70's and 80's) is fascinating.

"The Wars Against Saddam" by the BBC's world affairs editor, John Simpson, which is an extremely insightful and balanced look at the West's relationship with Saddam and Iraq over the last 30 years right up to October '03 when it was published.

For anyone interested in Vampire books (I LOVE them), Laurell K. Hamilton has a great series (the Anita Blake series). The main character is a spunky, female vampire hunter who has to deal with shape-shifters as well. They are all pretty good. She even throws in a little S&M touch as the series progresses.

oooo thankyou honEbee, i was thinking of getting those books, but not sure if they would be any good or not...
from what u describe sounds very much to my liking ;)

i think everyone must read "the celstine prophecy" by James redfield...it just amde all my thoughts clear and i understand the world a bit better now :)

My two favorite books apart from that is

"the bronze horseman" by Paulina Simmons and

"as the crow flies" by Jeffery Archer

I'm currently re-reading some virginia andrews books because i havent read them since i was 15 so wanted to read them with a fresh perspective...i know they are looked at as trashy unintelligent books but they are enteratining reading and can never put them down

i'm also reading the 2nd book in the celestine prohecy series

Isn't the 2nd book "The Tenth Insight"?

a couple of good non-fiction that i love:

the third chimpanzee by jared diamond
the moral animal by robert wright

both are sort of evolutionary psychological and biological explanations of why we do what we do, and explores similar behaviors in other animals. they're both pretty easy reads too with authors that do a decent job in not being tooo sciency.

:)

I enjoyed the Art of Happiness myself.

As far as non-fiction books (which I primarily read), I've enjoyed books by Erich Fromm - "The Art of Loving" "To Have or To Be"
Scott Peck "The Road Less Travelled"

As far as fiction, I'd recommend
Orson Scott Card "Ender's Game"
Harper Lee "To Kill a Mockingbird"
Milan Kundara "Unbearable Lightness of Being"

Books that'll fuck with your sense of reality:

Marabou Stork Nightmares - Irvine Welsh
Killing Paparazzi - Robert M Eversz
The Wasp Factory - Iain Banks
Eating Eight - Lars Paul Linden (currently out of print)
Penny Dreadful - Will Christopher Baer
