FAST FOOD NATION

comparable to Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" in the way it takes a stomach-turning look at the inside of the fast food business. It traces the start of fast food, what goes on inside the factories (surprisingly little has gotten better since Sinclair's times), etc etc. Really good read if you wanna go on a diet. You'll never look at a Big Mac with cheese and your fries the same way again.

I read that two christmas's ago and haven't eaten in a Maccy Ds or Burger King type place since. Powerful book.

I've completely sworn off fast food and supermarket beef since reading Fast Food Nation. I wasn't quite as impressed with his second effort, "Reefer Madness," but it is a pretty good read.

I never actually finished this book, but the dice man by Luke Rhinehart seemed like a pretty cool book. I liked the plot, all this stuff about fatalism is really captivating.

we need to compile these threads, cos I've posted in about 4 over the years, and looking back I realised I've posted the same freaking post each time ;)

If someone'll make it a sticky, I'll put together a basic combined list of everyone's recommendations when I get a chance.

Let me know when you plan on doing, or whether you need a hand and we'll work something out :)

What are the other threads?

'Thus spoke zarathustra' by Nietzsche if you're a thinking person... that will totally attack all your beliefs :)

I didn't realise reading could have the effect his did

I haven't read it in a while but it is the most powerful thing I have read in the last 5 years (probably ever)

I haven't read it for a while, cos I'm still not sure I'm ready for it

I was thinking of just dragging them into a master list, maybe split it by fiction (arranged alpha by author) and non-fiction (by general topic). Maybe include the names of who recommended what (it's not quite 'Amazon's 'other people who bought this also liked....' but it's the same idea). Then maybe edit the first post to put the master list there, and update it as people posted new suggestions. Kinda like the BLer contact details thread in the Lounge. If that's acceptable, of course.

Women's lit reading list

Bluelighter reading list

Bluelight book club Book recommendation thread

Has some recommendations for physics texts

Oh yeah on a lighter note than my prior suggestion 'Ringolevio' is a good autobiography about a guy from the 60's who lived a really full life and did loads of stuff and looks at things in quite a good way. He worked with the diggers.
Don't take it too literally, he's full of himself, but its really good and easy to read.

Thank you to ummm I think it was 1024? that mentioned 1984... it is my favorite book.

I recommended Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt to ANYONE. This book is beautiful and moving. If you don't know what it's about, you've probably been living in a tortise shell... so for you turtle-lovers, it's about the life of Frank McCourt growing up in Ireland. It changed my view of what actually is "having it bad".

For you political <3ers Lies: And the Lying Liars Who Tell Them...A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right. Although like most people, I don't agree with Al Franken, I found this amusing and informative.

by the way, I second Xena's Perks of Being a Wallflower. This book is often bashed by the emo hate club... unjustifiably if you ask me. Emo kids need help but this book doesn't. Check it out without a bias.

The Outsider and That Was Then, This Is Now - S.E. Hinton - I read these in high school and loved them, not sure how I'd go now - I fell in love with the whole nostalgic 60's era :)

This is the last time I open my big mouth on this board ;)

I've compiled one thread so far (it wasn't even one of those one I linked to). It had 44 posts. I've also found another thread with 484 posts. Someone should stop the Australians from posting, they clearly have nothing to do other than talk about books all day ;)

ANYTHING by Louise Cooper, spec. her Indigo series or Time Master trilogy.
(first book of indigo is called Nemesis, searching by indigo is useless, and the series is out of print so good luck)
