QLD Floods

Cheers all, I have just been advised we are being supplied with accomodation so thats not a prob.
We are now just awaiting for the Qld government to give the word to move. May not be for some days as I understand it.
In the meantime I am just trying to get an understanding of just what we will be facing so we can go prepared.
 
Some suburbs in Brisbane are starting to go under, but that will change later today and tomorrow as flood waters increase. Until that happens no idea exactly what you will be facing in Brisbane, but the flood waters in Ipswich are probably a good indication of what some suburbs here will be like.

There will be a lack of power in affected suburbs and the CBD, some people stranded, lack of supplies perhaps, people needing to be evacuated. Extra supplies sounds like a good idea, as you will probably encounter people in need.

I might go out for a walk this afternoon and take some pictures and put them up on here.
 
Walked down to Yeronga early this morning and most of that area is under, as well as the tennis centre. It is quite something to see, but really devastating as well. A lot of roads in my area have been shut so I haven't been driving anywhere.

Going by the creek near my house I don't think it will reach me. Down the road friends studio's are getting flooded (5-10 min walk) but the creek close by seems to be at an ok level. Hopefully it should be ok but I can get out if need be.

The power will be off soon so we have decided there isn't much we can do if the water does reach our house particularly when it peaks sometime in the middle of the night. Just going to have to wait it out now until Saturday/Sunday and then assess the damage.

I was thinking about your place :( Your right in the middle of the floodway, yeah? Have you managed to raise your furniture or have you just sand-bagged and hoped for the best?

Is it true that a some insurance companies won't pay out? I know the cafe on the river that was destroyed isn't covered by insurance at all (i heard the manager say that on the video posted, because it's on the river so not covered by flood). If you live on or near the river, are you covered for flood?

Depends what company you're with. Suncorp is about the only one (i can think of) that will cover for flood, especially for building insurance.

For something like this a lot of people aren't going to be covered. In Brisbane a lot of it was caused by the river. You could try and appeal the decision, but especially as it hasn't rained here today it's going to be really hard if they decide not to cover someone. Basically you're covered if the flood is caused by downpour of rain (flash flooding like in Toowoomba), but different story in Brisbane with rising rivers.

Pretty fucked really, especially for people with building insurance. :(

EDIT : For some brighter news the flood peak has been downgraded to 5.2 metres.
 
Sand bagged and hope for the best. Anything more than knee high and no number of bags is going to help.We are right on the brink of the flood mapping which hopefully means it might just lap at the bottom rooms. If you remember the carpets down there you will know it is not great loss if they need to be replaced. We went around the house and everything we really treasured we threw in the car. Other than that the ex got all the good stuff in the divorce so insurance will cover most. The big screen tele isn't even full HD so there's your silver lining. ;)The trick with flood insurance is they won't pay on tidal sea flow. That cafe was almost completely packed up last night when were down there but it will be a hell of a clean up. I'm not looking forward to the mud to be honest.

We are trying to be optimistic when we compare to the '74 floods but this is something else. We are at my mum's with a fridge full of booze and working internet. I'll head back tomorrow between the two peaks and just suss out the damage.
 
this rising water has cut me off from mates and we can't go very far. Such a shame i really want a chop :( Best of luck to every else effected!

ETA: Maybe not so soon, the internet is being really slow for some reason...

Good to hear you're safe and dry Mr Blonde & Busty. I'm still okay over at my end too. Unfortunately I have some mates in East Brisbane whose house in under water :( I have some photos of the destruction here but will have to wait until my net connection is stable again before uploading them.

Latest Police warning:

For people in parts of the Northwest, Central West, Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego Forecast Districts.

Issued at 7:09 pm Wednesday, 12 January 2011.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce very heavy rainfall and flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Thargomindah, Windorah, Bulloo Downs, Eromanga, Stonehenge and Davenport Downs Station.

92mm of rainfall recorded near Windorah since this afternoon.

Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:

* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 10:10 pm.

Glad to hear the QLD's of the group are (at the very least) safe and unharmed. I can guarantee everyone here on Aus Social and BL in general are thinking of you at this time.

I just heard a long range forcast that suggests Brisbane had a 40% chance of being hit by a cyclone in the next couple of weeks.

^ I can't get that first link to work... and what is the story with the second link? Any further information for that map? Is that what the water level is at the moment or prediction?? Where did you find it mate? :)

ETA: Too slow!

ETA Mach II: It looks similar to the areas that are predicted to be affected and possibly are. I will head out later on and see what has changed since yesterday. The peak was lower then they expected, but the city is apparently flooded now and they expect damage to be greater then 1974 due to Brisbane being more developed.

ETA Mach III: A Brisbane man was sucked into a storm drain overnight, and has become the city's first fatality of the flood.

Did everyone see that 200 meter long walkway from the CBD that floated the 3kms being guided by those Tug Boats through the pylons of the Gateway? Well... this is what they look like, there is 10 pilons on each bridge I think... not sure about the approaches.
