What are the advantages to having a dedicated headphone pre-amp? I plug mine directly into the headphone output of external sound card or portable MP3 player and it sounds pretty good to me.

Anyone on Head-Fi? That would be interesting. I am, but I don't go there except when it's time to hunt new 'phones.

I don't have any IEMs any longer, as they either died or I lost them, but I have owned Shure e2cs, Super.Fi 3s, Denon AH-C700s, Denon AH-C551s, and Fischer Audio Eternas.

I still have my Audio Technica ATH-AD700s, though. I had the A700s too, but I sold them. Actually, I might have the model names wrong. Whichever is the open version I have, and I sold the closed version.

I bought a CMoy that is now defunct, and have a Minibox D floating around somewhere but I never use it. I should. But right now, I lost my Zune (see, no shitty iPod) with my Eternas so I have nothing to amp, maybe my netbook...

Oh, and I have some decent el-cheapo 2.1 speakers for my desktop, Logitech X-230. I thought about buying a soundcard, but I don't seriously listen to music at my computer.

As for the actual files, using a Zune as my primary music device, I cannot use FLAC, and quite frankly, would not have any HDD space at all, nor any music, as that is still an uncommon codec. I have a bunch of files that I downloaded several years ago, some of which might still be 128kbps but all the music I have downloaded as of the past few years has been at least 192kbps. 320kbps is optimal.

I'm always listening to music, even when I'm not physically listening to it, music constantly is going on in my head. It pulses through almost my body all the time, my life is always going to some beat. When doing drugs, good music is a must. This past year I have found that while taking recreational psychs or entactogens all I want to listen to is good Dubstep. It's the freakin' bass! Even when I listen to dub songs sober, it almost gets me back to that frame of mind. I guess you could say it gets me high. I haven't found much comparable to a great bass drop while dancing your ass off and peaking on psychs.

Oh I was about to buy the ATH AD-700 or AD-900 (And these are the open versions) but then i decided to just stick with my UM2s for a little longer and blow my money on other things. But the only okay pair of actual 'phones i owned was bose on-ear. That was before i ever looked up headphones on the internet. So i've been wanting to get some actual cans so i can get the full utterly amazing soundstage/imaging and instrument seperation that(most) IEMs lack. Thats why i was looking at the AD-700 because of the open design the soundstage is supposed to be better.

Oh and for anyone who likes to lay down while tripping and listening to music you should check out some IEMs like westone and shure 530 (i think) because the way that they sort of 'conform' to your ear you can lay on your side and be totally comfortable and in total musically enhanced drug induced euphoria.

Do you find the 280's a bit intense when tripping? They just isolate you so much that i cant really relax. I prefer my bose triport headphones for that (lower quality but more relaxing sound, and more comfortable.

I'm pretty sensitive to noise and what not, so the more the isolation, the more I can really focus in with out my ADD getting the best of me. Also, I like the clarity that comes with the isolation of noise. Makes it easier to fall father into the music while under the influence, though the more fucked up I become I generally don't care as much about the quality of music as it becomes harder to differentiate between a bit higher quality sound, and one of a little less quality.

I will say the one issue with the headphones especially while under the influence of a drug is the pressure from the headphones can get a little annoying, especially when you are more sensitive about your environment due to the psychedelic drugs.

Where do I even start?!


Right now, music is absolutely essential for my LSD trips. Lately I just smoke DMT and eat LSD, and DMT trips are way too short to involve music. I'm excited to explore music + ayahuasca in the near future however!

Music + LSD is a different beast altogether, than music or LSD alone. And of course, when listening to recordings, higher fidelity = deeper experience!

My latest trip report attempts to describe the combination (although I was only using cheap Apple earbuds!).



I do prefer speakers to headphones or earbuds if I've got the choice. Right now, if I'm at home, I listen to music from: iTunes library -> Apogee Duet -> (2x) Yorkville YSM1P-II. HIGHLY recommended setup for those on a tight budget like myself!

I also have a Triad Audio Lisa III headphone amp, and a pair of AKG K701s. The combination is very good. However -- it has this really amazingly uncanny synergy with this old Rotel CD player that my dad gave me as a hi-fi hand-me-down -- I swear, listening to music on the Rotel CDP -> Lisa III -> K701s, sounds like listening to music on acid, even while you're sober! It just has this warm, deep, huge, shimmering, magical sound that intoxicates you.

You'd need to hear it to believe it!

Definitely get the AD-700! They're pretty cheap now and are amazing at clarity, separation, and soundstage. The bass is anemic, though, which sucks for me as a basshead, but I've fallen in love with them anyhow. I was told by several people on Head-Fi that there are no phones in the $200 price range that would be enough of an upgrade to be worth the extra cash.

You sound like you crawl around Head-Fi. How are those Denons? I loved the sound sig of their IEMs. They are out of my price range, though. That and they are closed and lacking velour earpads.

Definitely! I don't understand why any high-end headphones would use PLEATHER pads. They're so CHEAP! They get so HOT and collect so much SWEAT. Plus they just look ugly.

the increase in quality of anything above vbr v0 has been proven to be imperceptible by the human ear. FLAC really only has utility as a backup resource. just sayin', you might be using a lot more space than you need to on your hard drive yo

Why not though when HDDs are so cheap? I've got 13 in my PC.

I've found all music sounds bliss on LSD, even when coming through some crappy laptop speakers.

13?!?! How is this possible? My PC case has 10 drive bays, one of which is taken up by a DVD drive, and another by a card reader. Two are hard drives, and I don't even think my motherboard has 10 SATA inputs...

My signal path goes: Windows Media Player -> Digidesign Audiomedia 3 -> Peavey RQ 2314 -> JBL LSR 25P (2x).

I've been very happy making choons with this setup for years now. I'm going to be upgrading the monitors this year (probably) as I keep having to send them back in for recones, I'm driving them too hard. They're still one of the best small nearfields I've ever laid my ears on, but I'm maxing them out even at 150W a piece in a small room. The clarity is incredible though; stereo imaging is beautiful and the midrange is tidy and balanced. Highs are crisp and lows are tight, although they could definitely be extended with a sub. These monitors sound insane when tripping though, the music really jumps out of the soundstage in to the room.

I'm not as informed about musical gear as some of you are, but I am definitely an audiophile. My pops used to own two music shops and when they closed I was left with a lot of awesome audio equipment. Listening AND playing music while tripping are two of my favorite activities. So far I have only experimented with lsd and music though, hopefully I'll try some new ones soon. I also came across an article that said music causes a release of dopamine
