I used to love comic books when I was a kid. I just recently rediscovered my love and appreciation for viewing and creating comic art. I have been thinking that a great way to get myself and the community here more interested in art and SO would be to have people collaborate on a comic book. It would also give creative people something to focus on, an outlet for their creative talents.

A comic book is also a great type of project for collaboration. A lot of labor goes into creating a book, it involves so many aspects artistic aspects, and it is naturally broken down into individual frames and parts. For instance, it needs a story, dialogue, pencilers, inkers, colorists, finishing and details, layout and design, etc. Not only can it be done by several people collaborating, but it usually is done as a collaborative project. Furthermore, people don't need to make some huge commitment. The book could hypothetically have a different artist for each frame.

A lot of coloring is done by computers nowadays, and I imagine that even though core images are done by illustration, so much of the book is probably generated digitally. I know that people who are good with photoshop can probably do some really awesome stuff to black and white inks that people produce.

I know lots of times people are way too lazy for this type of thing, but it doesn't have to progress really fast. We just take it a frame at a time. I would love to take someone's story and characters and illustrate them. It sounds like a lot of fun to me.

Anyone interested?

I took a graphic novel class last semester and got pretty into it. I write poetry better than stories but I can put my english major skills to work and edit if anyone wants me to :)

I once proposed a similar idea to ryanlaughlin. I'd provide the story, he'd provide the pictures. Didn't ever happen.

That said, I'm totally down. I've got dozens of half written screenplays that could provide some excellent comic book fodder if I have one or two people to help flesh the shit out and fill in the blanks.

Erm, maybe yes.

I'm from the UK. 15 years ago a friend and I collaborated in writing a drug information comic. It's here.

We had 2000 copies pulped by the organization who paid us to write it as it was a bit too radical for them. We've only recently stuck it on the web.

If anyone is interested in a updated version/similar kind of thing, as in collaborating on one, I'd be up for that....except I'm off round the world in 3 months. Hmmm.

Throwing it out there for interest.

nice! that is a sweet comic!

i'm intending to start my own web comic as well but my forté is entertaining storylines not drawing. count me in if this collective effort needs a creative writer :)

I'd love to do either pencils or inks, or alternate between the two. Still need other ppl though.

i guess we need to start by choosing a story, a style, a context ??
will it be modern, sci-fi, abstract, love story, about drugs, in the past, imaginary ??
all of the above ?

decide on a genre, and then we can start submitting synopsis' to expand on

My suggestion for Genre is Cyberpunk with somekind of drug-related theme or sub-plot (it is BL after all!), but not centred around drugs.

I'd be more than happy to provide story ideas and plot outlines, but someone else would have to do the actual dialogue since I'm not very good at that.

Here are some of the ideas that I've been kicking around for years. Some of these I have actually fleshed out into short stories and/or short film screenplays. Others are just ideas that I've written down with the intention of expanding on them.

Crime fiction - Do a story about the last week of a small organized crime organization, and how it implodes from within.

Horror - Tell the story of a survivor of a zombie apocalypse. The undead revolution is quickly put down after a month or so, but the events during that month drive one man to insanity. As society is beginning to recover the man snaps and becomes a psychotic serial killer.

Dystopian satire - There is a division of a totalitarian government in charge of the media. More specifically: television. The people running the media are constantly coming up with new ways to keep the public entertained and complacent. Their newest "celebrity" is a man who begins as a revolutionary but quickly becomes and unwitting pawn. Think "Network" meets "Harrison Bergeron".

Counterculture Super Hero - The wacky adventures of E-Baby, The Shard, The Psychonaut and Nangman as they take on the evil forces of Yuppie Skum, The Man, Mr. Born Again and The Straight Edge.

Pulp - A small group of guys decide to take revenge on the woman they think sent their friend up the river. Murder, blackmail, deceit and lots of sex ensues.

I've got plenty more...
