I had my first colonoscopy recently and Propofol made the overall experience- dare I say- pleasurable. The day prior is obviously rough as you are fasting, taking laxatives, drinking fluids, and shitting your brains out.
Randomly, I was repeatedly listening to the song, “Right Down the Line” by Gerry Rafferty while prepping for the procedure. It’s a great song if you haven’t heard it!
Anyway, I’m administered Propofol and wheeled into the surgery room, and they have a radio on playing “Right Down the Line!” I felt like I was in a dream but I knew I wasn’t under yet. I started trying to tell a nurse that this song was a new favorite of mine (she was just laughing at my incoherent jabber.)
Next thing I knew, it was over, but I had a relaxed calm about me for several hours after. I was laughing with the nurse, and laughing with my girlfriend on the ride home. It’s really sad to say, but it’s the most content I’ve felt in years. I’d like to think I could reach that level of comfort without drugs, but I’m not sure it’s possible at this point in my life.
Anyway, don’t get nervous when you turn 45 and have to get a colonoscopy. It’s pretty fun!
