Propofol experience

I had my first colonoscopy recently and Propofol made the overall experience- dare I say- pleasurable. The day prior is obviously rough as you are fasting, taking laxatives, drinking fluids, and shitting your brains out.

Randomly, I was repeatedly listening to the song, “Right Down the Line” by Gerry Rafferty while prepping for the procedure. It’s a great song if you haven’t heard it!

Anyway, I’m administered Propofol and wheeled into the surgery room, and they have a radio on playing “Right Down the Line!” I felt like I was in a dream but I knew I wasn’t under yet. I started trying to tell a nurse that this song was a new favorite of mine (she was just laughing at my incoherent jabber.)

Next thing I knew, it was over, but I had a relaxed calm about me for several hours after. I was laughing with the nurse, and laughing with my girlfriend on the ride home. It’s really sad to say, but it’s the most content I’ve felt in years. I’d like to think I could reach that level of comfort without drugs, but I’m not sure it’s possible at this point in my life.

Anyway, don’t get nervous when you turn 45 and have to get a colonoscopy. It’s pretty fun!

Yeah, Propofol has a nice afterglow. Much better than Pentothal.

Colonoscopies quite often use Fentanyl or Demerol. A couple colonoscopies ago, I got Demerol and they guy put it in the IV quickly enough for me to get a bit of a rush. I kinda see what junkies like about that now.
Last one, I still got Demerol but the guy followed directions more exactly and put it in the IV slowly. I just noticed I was feeling it gradually. Darn him.

Colonoscopies are not that bad, actually. Even when they don't put you all the way out, you're high enough to not sweat what they're doing at all.
Now, the day before... that sucks donkey dicks.

I have Eosinophilic Esophagitis and have had 6 dilations so I know propofol pretty well the only thing is every time they administered it with fentanyl ( even after I told them I have history of opioid abuse) so... its hard to differentiate the effects. Anyway, I know I usually feel pretty good when I get out of there.

They had used propofol on me before, I remember that pint-of-milk bottle laying around and never felt anything, but one day that changed.
After my last surgery, a very short one, I awoke very happy but blurry, feeling great but totally disoriented. Everything felt friendly but strange as fuck; months before I had been travelling around Romania so somehow my brain took it as if I were in a romanian hospital after having an accident. Started asking shit using the few words and sentences that I knew in Romanian and found it amazing that all that foreign hospital crew could speak to me in perfect Spanish. It didn't last too much, they explained me where we were and that I felt that way cause of the anaesthesia.
It also made me horny. I awoke with a non specific sex related feeling, as if I were having wonderful wet dreams that I wasn't able to remember

Wow, I won’t dread getting my first one in a couple of years, then. And all the preemptive shitting, well, I have IBS so that’s just a Tuesday for me 🤷🏻‍♀️
The bad thing is that...
1. You have to be careful
2. You have to sleep sometimes

I’d just wear the gigantic post-baby pads they make (if any women reading this have not yet had children, if you thought a period was bad, ha, wait until you birth a baby. It’s like WATERFALLS of blood) and change it in the morning. Problem solved

Exactly. Little accidents do need to be allowed for. Not fun. The next day you're sleepy and dehydrated, but then they give you drugs.
Some docs put you all the way out and some do the "twilight sedation" thing where you are just pretty high. You can pick and choose doctors, and even what each doc picks, to where you just go in, take a nap, and wake up in post-op if you want. Day of procedure is easy.

I've only been given Fentanyl or Demerol, so that's nice. Wish I could pick that.
Cancer is a whole lot less fun I had a boss who died of colon cancer which is very treatable if found early.

Damn propofol sounds lovely, wish I could get that instead of the fentanyl, midazolam iv when I go for my yearly colonoscopy.

Honestly though how god awful is that prep they make you drink the day before. Shit tastes like a bubble gum or cotton candy Slurpee mixed with rock salt. 4 liters of that god awful shit is getting harder and harder to stomach every year

Michael Jackson is an example of using Propofol as a recreational drug.
I would love to know all the details of Jackson’s drug addictions.

Seems like it was mainly all downers. Strangely not a lot of mention of opioid use which is everyone’s favorite downer.

I know the propofol and benzos were a big part of his addiction

He used Propofol to sleep, and likely for other reasons.
He had a doctor on salary whose only job when he died was to watch him breath. But, he was in the other room on his phone.

I read that MJ used propofol as a sleep aid for a long time, which is bad because your body feels refreshed but it’s not restorative sleep.

Reportedly, his doctor was trying to ween him off the drug which can have serious consequences as well.

Basically, the article said he died as a result of withdrawal but would have died soon anyway if he didn’t stop daily use.

Obviously the doctor made some mistakes.

Where did you read that? The doc's stories have discrepancies.

But there's

"determining that Jackson died from acute propofol intoxication, exacerbated by the anxiolytic lorazepam, and less significantly midazolam, diazepam, lidocaine, and ephedrine. The coroner kept the complete toxicology report private, as requested by the police and district attorney.[2]

The autopsy report revealed that Jackson was otherwise healthy[32] for his age (age 50) and that his heart was strong; his most significant health problem was that his lungs were chronically inflamed, but this did not contribute to his death."

So, he had a lot of drugs in him. People used to sell you stuff saying, "This is the shit that killed Elvis.". Now, I guess it would be, "This is the shit that killed Michael Jackson."

Serious question, BTW. I'd read the article. I don't think we'll ever know a lot for sure.

Just got back from my colonoscopy. My third one in a single month. The other two failed so this time they actually put me under using propofol. The anesthesiologist was trying to be sneaky. As the GI doc was going over something with the nurse, I noticed my vein began to slightly burn and immediately I knew what they hit me with. I've never actually been put under. Don't anesthesiologist usually inform the patient. They are giving them some kind of anesthetic to put them out before doing so?

anyways I was a lil disappointed with its effects, given all the hype around it. i had been up the whole night shitting my brains out and i did take some lyrica and norflurazepam a few hours before. don't get me wrong, It was definitely pleasant. As the effects took hold the room slowed down a bit, all of my body tension and discomfort in my bowels dissipated. felt like a really strong benzo with some pain relief properties. i must have blacked out or rather immediately slipped into unconsciousness because I was waiting for another dose of propofol still aware of everything around me. well I never got the second dose because the procedure had already taken place haha. Total lapse in consciousness. Although the main effects are quite short-lived, there's definitely an afterglow.

Almost always, but if they decide they need it during the op, you'd naturally expect them to do it anyway.

I've never needed anything during a colonoscopy, not even the nitrous. I always wondered what the big deal was as I literally can't feel anything at all, though it all looks very interesting on the camera scope as they go up the pipes lol.
