^ What makes you think the voting results will be different next time?

The last 3 elections show that the majority of Australian will vote for whoever lies and is forced down their throat the most.

"There's a piece of graffiti in Melbourne, by the Yarra River, scrawled on an electricity substation with a map of Australia and the words Redneck Wonderland written across it. Underneath the map is a statement: Will the forests that survived the ice age survive the Howard Government. Save Coolengook Forest, and those two words just stuck with us."

- Midnight Oil

I don't, I'm just thinking aloud. It seems that if one's concern lies with the improvement of the country, leaving the country isn't the best way to go about it. I'm speaking from sheer lack of understanding the mindset, I'm not trying to attack anyone at all.

Even if you do go live overseas you'll still have to vote in the Australian elections, that is unless you give up your citizenship to Australia.

So really short term (or even long term) you're not achieving much by moving overseas because you don't like the results of this election. At least we still have the right to vote, citizens of some countries don't even have that right!!!

^ if anyones thinking about leaving, you can apply from a waiver-like thing to not have to vote.

or you can lodge a vote via mail or possibly even online now?

^Oh well, guess I was wrong then.

I guess if those people didn't vote then they have absolutely no right to complain, do they??

Oh well another 3 years of coalition government. :(

It was a hard fought campaign and the liberal/nationals should be congratulated on achieving an historic 4th term.

Out of all of this my main concern is that basic truth and honesty in government is not a pressing issue with the Australian public. I can live with a conservative government that pursues an opposing ideology, because at the end of the day we simply share different opinions on what is important.

What I can't live with is a government that blatantly lies, distorts the truth and victimises people for their own political gain, no matter where that government sits on the left/right spectrum. And this is what the Howard Government have done time and time again, and this is a FACT.

I find it difficult to understand how this is not such an important issue for a lot of people, and maybe my inability to see this is one of my failings.

^^ It's one thing to have liberal beliefs, it's another to support a blatant liar. Who is really stupid?

You for not understanding what you are voting for. Go hugs a tree or work for World Vision if you care that much about the rest of the world, I don't. I want Australia to be strong financially and have superpower backing. Latham would have sent troops to Iraq just as Howard did, to pretend otherwise is just retarded.

Well said Macksta.
I don't understand why anyone would want the leader of our country to be someone who lies to the point where they're told they should take a lie detector test (over the children overboard affair) or where they go to war for reasons that have now been found to be false.
Also, we may have a good economy, but what's the use of having that if our country doesn't have any morals, if our health and education systems are failing, if our environment is depleted (tassie forests)?

Instead, in some circumstances, they just seem to throw citizenship at people.

This is very true. My sister's old housemate is from England and is studying here and decided to apply for dual citizenship not because he loves Australia, but because he wants to only pay HECS rather than full fees. He complains about Australia in every second sentence. People who love this country and make a contribution to it should be given citizenship. Not some whinging tightarse pom. (no offence to any English people out there. I was referring only to this man when I wrote that.)

Cant believe the Liberals won by a huge margin...it wasnt exactly close...

I did voted for labour but dont really mind Howard. Im going to open a small business soon and his tax break for small businesses gonna benefit me as definitely wont be turning over 50k...!

Well we all know what the majority of the country is like and I guess its a sign of the times of a fast moving global economy, strategic alliances and dog eat dog world.

What government, political party, and politician doesn't lie??
Be his name John Howard or Mark Latham.

Really, In the end it doesn't matter who ends up in power, they're not going to keep alot of their promises, and will lie to cover up issues.

^^

No, I'm sorry - the 'all politicians lie' argument is vague, weak and is a cop out response for people who don't want to properly examine the issue of honest governance.

From the vicious attack on Justice Kirby, to WMD, Children overboard, the Mike Scrafton phone conversation denial and interest rates. A litany of mistruths that were made knowingly and with the intent to deceive the Australian people.

Proven lies that were meant to instill fear such as children overboard and interest rates have undisuputedly helped the Coalition win the past two elections, and to be honest I find the manipulation of a federal election in a democratic society such as ours to be completely abhorrent.

I don't believe Mark Latham or a Labor government would attempt to deceive the electorate in such a manner, although if they did they would very quickly lose my support. At any rate you can't accuse someone of doing something until they have actually done it... and John Howard certainly has form for this.

i dont think Riot Grrrl was actually praising howard or the liberal party...

and i'm sorry but it IS true that ALL governments LIE. it's not a cope out, it's a sad fucking fact. some do it to lesser extents than others and have better ideas than others, but there aren't any political angels out there unfortunately, and there definitely is no honest governance. in my eyes lathams the lesser evil but that doesn't mean i'm actually going to delude myself into believing that he's all good.

that's just how i interrupted it anyway.

Not only is the psychologically damaged little freak Prime Minister again but it looks like he will have pretty much free reign when it comes to making and blocking policies.

A bleak day for Australian Democracy indeed.
