I'm trying to get cash together now and move there, I've just been there for one month and it's fantastic.

they are so far advanced in terms of anything....

Good for you. I was only there for just over three weeks. Not nearly enough. I want to live in europe (switzerland in particular) forever!

I'm currently trying to pull a few strings for getting a European passport. My mother's grandparents were Irish born, that entitles her to an Irish passport and also (I believe) Irish Citizenship. Maybe if she gets Irish Citizenship, then I can become one too.

you guys just sound like sore losers.

OMG the greens didnt get in... and all their brilliant policies blah blah ;)

^^
I know how you guys feel, I'm living in the UK now and I will not return to OZ until little Johnny and his lying blood covered party are out of power... that being said it looks like Tony Blair will get reelected over here, so maybe the problem is that most people just don't give a shit that we have been lied to in order to start a war....

god I'm depressed
:(

I didn't vote for the greens at all, I think most of their policies are stupid.

I voted for Latham, who really should of won the election. Howard wont even commit to a full 3 years?

I guess it's a shame that 51% of australians aren't economics students. Although maybe that's a good thing... ;)

On a separate note though, I think it's a bit overly dramatic to want to renounce citizenship based on this election result. People might think it's sucks, and if they do then they'd probably also think it's sucked since '96. But nobody knows what will happen now. Costello might make a challenge for the leadership, and while that might be seen as just as bad, I think he has more positives than Howard (at least he's a Victorian ;) ).

I'm just curious - has anyone here ever considered running for office? If you feel passionately about these issues, this is a way to actually do something about it. I'd say it's a better option than jumping on a plane (no offence intended)...

There's quite a few liberal parties in my street by the sounds of things....people yelling and cheering and cars honking horns. This is truly a great time for Australia :)

I extend a James Boags to my fellow Aussies :)
Cheers!

To leave the country over an election is a bit dramatic to say the least. I agree, sore losers. If you want to leave because it's so bad here, go for it.

My thoughts exactly.

Exsqueeze me?

I voted labour, not that it seemed to do much fucking good. God, I can't believe they got back in. The libs whole campaign basically preyed on peoples fears about interest rates even though it was totally unfounded and people just lapped that shit up.

Between Howard being a liar, labour having a superior policy for Tassie forests and the idea of having Costello as leader, I thought labour stood more of a chance. I hope they don't out Latham as leader of the opposition, seeing as he didn't get a full term and has brought the labour party forward a long way from when he got in.

Heh, good luck. If you don't like our immigration policy then don't even think about switzerland. Over there, if you want to become a citizen, first of all you have to live there for 12 years, and then the community into which you intend to immigrate has to vote. I like the system, it's democracy at work, and a good way of keeping the riff-raff out. They don't mind bringing in foreign workers though (one look in most of the tourist shops in lucerne will tell you that).

But if you want to live there forever, it's a tough naturalisation test to pass.

Fucking Hell!!! Is everybody in this god damn patch of dirt absolutley insane? How the fuck could anyone possibly think Howard is anything but the most evil human to ever grace the hallowed halls of our god forsaken house of reps. Dont you all understand? 70% of you earn below 70,000 a year. That means that under Howard you get FUCKED! No ifs No buts! He has lied about the most sacred of issues! He has pretended to care about the economy when any economics student knows that it was his policies as treasurer which lead us down the path to "the recession we had to have". He is the most revolting little worm it has ever been my distinct pleasure to wish horrific death apon!!! CANT ANYONE REMEMBER THAT THE WHOLE IRAQ WAR WAS BASED ON A LIE!! THOUSANDS APON THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE DIED FOR A GOD DAMN LIE!!!!!! AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry about that I just needed to get it off my chest.

I totally agree.

I am NOT HAPPY!!!!! :( .

yeah its pretty beautiful over there. but i must warn you the swiss are renowned for being nationalistic.

for example my dad works in a company over there and peoples wages actually vary according to the country that they're from.... so basically this means the middle easterners and croatians get the lowest pays and of course the swiss get the highest [all regardless of expertise]. i fucking couldn't believe it when he told me.

i'm meh atm about the whole Howard thing... it's all just slight degrees of evilness that separate politicans anyway. it's fucking sad austalia, what chu doing, huh?

if only Australia adapted the same policies, I'd love for them to say "if you want citizenship you must live here for 12 years and then we all vote on it"

instead, in some circumstances, they just seem to throw citizenship at people.

I have to admit that their rules for immigration, let alone citiizenship are unbelieveably tough. I've been given the full story about switzerland and I am indeed very shocked, but there is no harm dreaming right? :) Besides switzerland is just one of the many places i'd love to live, like the French riviera. But as we all know living can be expensive over there, so any such move will require preperation. But in that time, things will change. I mean they have to right?!?

As for being a sore loser because the greens didn't get it. pffft. I don't think anyone was expecting them to get in. You see unlike Americans who vote liberetarian their insignificant votes don't move onto their next preference, ours do. They almost always will get distributed to Labour.

The problem with running for anyone running office, especially bluelighters are the dirty tricks campaigns. Someone who knows about your history but doesn't want to vote for you is just a phone call to the press away about disclosing your whole recent drug history. Otherwise, maybe I would consider running for office.

Disclaimer: Angry, angry man.

This one is dedicated to all the liberal voters out there...

At The Mercy Of Imbeciles - Bad Religion

What you do is what you are
And wishing upon distant stars
Won't improve the hole you're in
Won't absolve your deepest sin
But action is no gift from some covert and lofty god
It's dependant and weighty all the same
And it is oh so easy just to keep to yourself
But then you're at the mercy of imbeciles
Now I didn't make up the rules
But clearly we are led by fools
It is wise to know their ways
So you know how not to behave
But sometimes we find ourselves in desperate need
And we look to those with privilege and power
It's then we learn compassion sits inert on their shelves
We're at the mercy of imbeciles
NO Actions is no gift from some masked spirit in the sky
It's reducible to flesh, mind, and bone
And it is oh so easy just to keep to yourself
But then you're at the mercy of imbeciles
Imbeciles
Imbeciles
IMBECILES

Thank you so much for fucking us all for another 3 years. You guys should have to wear signs warning of your mental retardation so I know who to avoid talking to. Fucking pond scum...

And without further adieu a modified version of Offspring's Kill The President.

In a world without leaders
Who'd start all the wars?
The world that your saving
Will always be yours

Kill the Prime Minister
Voice the reason
Unify that single line
Stop the man with the power
Of the goverment
A leader's not the center
Of democracy

In a world without leaders
Who'd make people starve?
The world that we're saving
Will always be ours

Everyone says
Well maybe I'll make a difference
Thinking they've got plenty of time
But you're squezed
A little tighter everyday
Punished before you commit a crime

In a world without leaders
Who'd start all the wars?
The world that your saving
Will always be yours

Kill the Prime Minister
Voice the reason
Unify that single line
Stop the man with the power
Of the goverment
A leader's not the center
Of democracy

Australia
All of your enemies
Come from within
But you lash out so
It is seen
Like some frightened child
In an angry world
Or the fall of Rome
Your demise comes
From your own hands

In a world without leaders
Who'd start all the wars?
The world that your saving
Will always be yours

In a world without leaders
We might have a chance
But we'll never see it
As long as there's
Kill the Prime Minister
Kill the Prime Minister
Kill the Prime Minister
Kill the Prime Minister
Kill the Prime Minister
Kill the Prime Minister Now

Seriously, is change so scary?

ooohhh change... Please Lord, hide me from having to use my brain.

If you think that having to wait 12 years for citizenship in Switzerland is bad, then try having to wait 25 years in Germany.

Anyway I'm really fucking upset about this election, although not surprised in the slightest. Too many people think about the economy and which party will benefit them better financially, but from the results last night it seems that no one cares about the moral standpoint that IMO is more important that the fucking economy.

Greens didn't do too badly for themselves. I guess that's something to be happy about.

8)

I didn't vote Liberal because I don't like change. I DO like change. But when the invitation for change is Mark Latham, I'm not going to vote for him. I didn't vote out of fear, as has been suggested, or because I'm misinformed, or because I hate asylum seekers.

Please be careful with your posting, some of these posts really do border on personal attacks against Liberal/National voters and it's pretty unnecessary - they have just as much right to vote as everyone else, attacks can stay out, thanks.

Edit: I would be saying exactly the same thing regardless of whether or not I voted Liberal, just FYI! Attacking people based on their political preference is kind of.. archaic.

Obviously some people don't think they have to, as evidenced by the number of people who've announced their departures in this thread :\ It seems kind of ironic that they're so concerned for the future of the country, but as soon as it doesn't go their way, they pack up and leave. Why not stick it out for 3 years, do their own community services and saving of the whales, and then vote again when the time comes? I don't really understand.
