You game cartridge has a battery to save your progress.
If your internal battery is dead, it is easy to apply a new one for a very cheap price.

When I was really into DXM I played zelda gameboy games alot and would have 2d zelda hallucinations while robotripping. Also another time I did benedryl and tripple Cs and when ever I closed my eyes I would have a vivid hallucination of my phone with the web browser going through shroom spore sites, since I spent a few hours doing that the day before.

You can download an gameboy emulator online for your computer (along with any gameboy game ever!) and play it on there. Not that playing on an actual gameboy wouldn't be awesome, it's just I personally wouldn't be able to do it on such a small screen! I feel like I might be able to focus on the computer screen better/for longer.
