Platform-Independent Technical Gibberings - hardware and "Internet"

Anyone got a Chromecast or Roku?

Have a chromecast, well, I bought one, decided it wasn't much use to me and plugged it in to my parents' telly. I have a Samsung smart TV which has good apps for all the UK TV catchup as well as Netflix though. The chromecast does iplayer, YouTube and Netflix really well, but it's still missing support for other on demand services in the UK, like 4oD, itv player, demand 5. I also didn't have much luck casting webpages from my laptop, and didn't find a good way of streaming video from my network drive (there's a plex app but my nas is too slow to run the server very well, might be better when I eventually upgrade to a HP microserver). I have a raspberry pi with XBMC (now called kodi or something?), which is great for streaming video, but the catch up apps all suck for it.

If anyone has something which does everything, let me know! I've got an old windows pc built into a nice "separates" style case, with an ir remote and everything, but it's a faff to start it up all the time. Plus, it's connected to my living room TV and I live in the bedroom at the moment..

I through the towel in on streaming video to the TV, in the end to much of a faff, as you say. My TV is semi-smart, it can do Iplayer and YouTube but I just pay for the bog standard Virgin + service which takes care of recording, playback and catch-up, it's mostly rubbish anyhow.

For films I just load up a USB Pen with AVI or MP4 and plug it into the Panasonic TV, not the most elegant solution but it works.

For audio I've got an old Netbook running Android solely so I can use Tonido and stream music from my 'Network', It works but I have to go to the Netbook that is physically plugged into the audio amp, remote desktop from Windows to this device proved tricky. I'll have another go at it soon, it would be easier to remote into a device connected to the Amp then everything would be possible without getting up

I R have 3D 42" tv which i load media onto via usb... has ethernet cable for iplayer and youtube. Youtube I run using my android phone as remote (old ace 2 samsung) which works well over wifi. Using not this summers but lasts macbook pro (not 15inch) but the better one with 8gb ram and 256 ssd... Got a 360 external hdd and 32gb card for my phone. Not got fibre but broadband which averages 400-500kb/s on utorrent. Using safari/chrome and vlc player. Youtube and torrent bandwidth hog. Emulate wii, gamecube and snes games and play hl2 death match and others through steam.

Have a 180quid netbook with tails os loaded onto usb drive too. Did have a tablet but sold it.

I'm unhappy with my tv as my old iMac got kicked into it and gashed off the polarised layer, so blatant scratch down the right side of display. The 3D is great but I hardly use it. Looking for a better TV but spending 760 odd on that one a couple years ago, I dunno if I should. I want/need a new phone and laptop. May wait till next summers macbook pro is out before I upgrade my laptop.

Does anyone use the "INSERT" key.

that thing always used to piss me off, because I would hit it by mistake and end up losing a load of writing as I tried to edit a paragraph.

but, after all these years I think I've finally 0wned it. many times, rather than deleting something... I will tactfully press the insert key and just write over it instead. Starting to find this little button beneficial.

press alt-f4 to save

lol.

Insert used to be a pain in the arse when I was learning to type but now I tend to look at the screen rather than the keyboard so immediately notice when I've activated it and am eating my previously typed stuff.

Does anyone else hate the "backspace" key? Cos when you hit it by mistake it somehow mysteriously deletes the last character you typed. So infuriating.

I also hate it when I hit the space bar by mistake. It inserts a fucking space when I don't want it to.

When will keyboard designers finally design a keyboard that actually works??? :X

Just don't type so much when ur on drugs.

I also hate the backspace key. as occasionally I hit it to delete a character, yet for some reason instead of deleting, it activates the "back" button on the Internet browser - losing the page and all the data I just typed. really pisses me off when it does that.

I got a cheap cherry keyboard, but it was made for macs. It feels nice to type on & it was cheap, but it has funny buttons, I have F13-F19, no idea why, there's a button that opens the cup holder too. I don't even have an insert key, no scroll lock either, there's a 'del' key, but the other keys in that block have alien symbols on. A few other keys are in the wrong place too, it's strange, but it was only a fiver.

I have a Ducky keyboard with blue cherry switches. Cherry switches for the win! Noisy fuckers but feel so good.

Mine is a cherry membrane keyboard, fuck noisy dirty expensive keyboard switches.

And fuck Macs & their keyboards. WTF should I do with 7 extra F keys & no scroll lock? Why is the @ sign printed in the wrong place on my keyboard?

fuck hipsters and their noisy as fuck clunky keys from the 90s.

the Das Keyboard is nice with no letters/numbers on the keys - but noisy.

I like lowprofile keys, still noisy but better for typing fast.

whoever built that overhead control panel in the gallery above should consider euthanasia probably.

laptop type keyboards are my favourite, but in desktop form. I buy the 10 quid ones and chuck them away after a while, most of the lettering is worn off this one i have at the moment.

i used to use them to skin up spliffs on tho, so they would always be full of bits of tobacco and bud.

I've just changed to two 22" screens at work and definitely prefer it, I have a dock for my work laptop so use an external keyboard most of the time although I also have a 'dirty' laptop for.....dirty things;)

At home I only ever use a laptop, I have a desktop in the house that I use for my ISP Email via Outlook but I just remote into it. I can not fekin abide touch pads and since no one wanted to fund a rather expensive habit for ThinkPads ( with their little red nipple ) I use a logitech marble as normal mices give me RSI.
