"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
February 2, 2011 — An estimated 10 million patients have used the pain reliever propoxyphene and were sent scrambling to doctors' offices when it was recently pulled from the market. Many physicians are still dealing with the aftermath of the product, first approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1957.

"Propoxyphene is the worst drug in history," Ulf Jonasson, doctor of public health, from the Nordic School in Gothenburg, Sweden, told Medscape Medical News. The researcher played a role in the decision to stop the pain reliever in the United Kingdom, Sweden, and later in the entire European Union.

"No single drug has ever caused so many deaths," Dr. Jonasson said.

Clinicians are now prescribing analgesic alternatives to propoxyphene.
Propoxyphene was banned in the United Kingdom 5 years ago because of its risk for suicide. It was taken off the market in Europe in 2009 over concerns about fatal overdoses and now in the United States for arrhythmias.

"I agree that propoxyphene is among the worst drugs in history," Eduardo Fraifeld, MD, president of the American Academy of Pain Medicine, said in an interview. "I'm surprised it stayed on the market so long. It's addictive, in my experience not very effective, and toxic."

I was once given a script for this. I went back with a copy of a paper finding it to be less effective than aspirin. To my surprise, he read it all, apologized and gave me a prescription for codeine in its place. I doubt he prescribed it again.

thank god. with my history of drug abuse, now they can't slap me in the face with some darvocet after i get injured, they'll have to give me something at least mediocre.

propoxyphene's painkilling properties are less than tylenol's8) good riddance indeed, never should have been prescribed in the first place.

dont worry about the nonsense he spews: he has a Swedish view on drugs

Hah, i remember back when i was first getting into opiates, i was looking for PERC-ocets and a kid by my locker (this was in high school lol) said he could get some. So he shows up with these huge pink/red lookin pills and said they were percocets and i took them. needless to say they did nothing. turns out they were DARV-ocet haha and he didnt know any better, neither did i sadly.

ahh to be 16 again

Good fucking riddance.

I was prescribed a metric ton of this stuff when I was a kid, in proximity to a surgery. I was 13 or 14, and didn't know a damn thing about drugs at the time. In retrospect, it was an absolutely recklessly stupid amount of medication. As if the propoxyphene wasn't hepatoxic enough, his prescribing instructions had me taking 7800mg of acetaminophen per day for over a month.

Shit like this pisses me off. How can somebody who went to school for so many years be so ignorant? This is exactly why my uncle is dead. He had no insurance, and the doc told him he just had diabetes - "here's some pills and a diet for you". A week later he died from chronic kidney failure, which the doctor failed to diagnose, even after blood/urine tests :!

I second qwe's question...what exactly is a "Swedish view on drugs"?

This couldn't have made me happier though, Darvocet is a horrible painkiller and dangerous, I'm surprised it took the FDA as long as it did to take it off the market...the evidence was pretty clear.

And the other good news is now doctors will at least prescribe people codeine, or even tramadol.

I have had my fair share of these pink demon pills. From injuries in the past And my grandparents had a gigantic bottle of them in the med. cabinet. I had taken the pink darvacets when i had just got on to the opiate scene thinking that they were some strong pain killer. I would take just three or four(i did this alot, I was young and dumb) at times i would take six of those big pills at a time.....and no they never got me itchy, warm, fuzzy. I got a nasty stomach problem from taking them so often in such great number. BUT I also came across darvacets sister pill called Darvon now thats a totally different story..Saved for another post.

Tramadol seems to be picking up in Chicagoland. Also, docs seem to be writing for Norco more than Vicodin, even though the necessary switch is still a ways off. Now if only they would take APAP out of all that OTC bullshit...

I know of 2 people that were getting Darvocets for pain & they both got switched to Norcos 10/325 after telling their doctors they wanted minimum tylenol in their pills.

my initiation into the world of opiates was with darvocet. found an unmarked prescription bottle of about 200 just laying around my parents house. just now hearing about how bad it is for me makes me glad i wasnt stupid enough to take more than i already was back then. i used to eat them by the 'handful', if i ran into my 15 year old self id kick his ass =P

look, they still have to get the fucking APAP and NSAIDS out of chronic opioids, and stop prescribing daily megadoses of Motrin and APAP cocktails to people for their pain. In the long run (even if you always stay below the acute toxicity limit) you can absolutely fuck your kidneys. See analgesic nephropathy. It's amazing the general public can go batshit about fluoridation and vaccination but be totally clueless about this.

I saw an ad on TV last night, one of the typical "If you have taken this drug and now have disease XYZ or 123, you may be able to get free money for calling our shady lawyer firm" ones, only this time the drug in question was darvocet.

I laughed, darvocet was one of the most popular prescription drugs for a time.

(dextro)propoxyphene sucks

Got 2 propoxyphene capsules sitting on my desk in a bottle, the ones w/o the apap in them. Last summer i had taken 2 of them & 2 tylenol & they gave me energy so I had to go walking in the middle of the night because of all the energy they gave me & I started having these weird thoughts. Thoughts like I wanted to punch someone in the face or dropkick someones door down & yell, im home real loud. It was the craziest thoughts.
