Proproxyphene and Conspiracy Theories
In the early 2000s (2001/2002) the British medical authorities were already taking steps to get this drug banned due to the fact that every year between 300 and 400 people were fatally overdosing on this drug; almost all of them acidentally.
It was most commonly prescribed as Co-Proxamol - a pill which condained Proproxyphene, in combination with good old paracetamol
Apparently taking as few as 10 co-proxamol in a 24 hour period could lead to such severe liver damage that death occurred.
As an interesting side note, Dr. David Kelly - a U.K. Government Scientist - whose evidence to a pre-Iraq invasion House of Commons Goverment Committee was warped and twisted and incoporated into what Brits now know as the infamous "dodgy dossier" of VERY weak "intelligence" snippets, "spun" science" from folk like poor old Dr. David Kelly and people such as a Masters undergraduate-student (I shit you not).
This dossier was the "prima facie evidence"
used by Prime Minister Blair to convince the House Of Commons and the House of Lords (the British House of Representatives and Senate) - along with the majority of the British populace, who took to London streets in their millions (singularly unconvinced by the political trickery which fooled their politicians into supporting Blair's bullshit) to show their vehement opposition to invading Iraq - that the British HAD armed forces must join our American allies in invading the sovreign nation of Iraq.
Dr David Kelly was so distressed by his experience in this sordid affair that he went into woods near his OXfordshire homeonevening and ate 29 proproxyphene/paracetamol tablets (which had been prescribed to his wife for rheumatic pain) and commited suicide (in conjunction with slashing an artery near a wrist) and these two actions combined with a pre-existing heart trouble finished him off.
My sources for all these claims are neither imaginary nor to hand but can be found in the extensive bibliography of the superb, meticulously-researched book called "Voodoo Histories by David Aaranovitch which my father - who is an extreme sceptic in conspiracy theories about events such as the J.F.K. assassination and the 9/11 terrorist attacks - strongly urged me to read and I have just finished reading it.
Its British author - David Aaronovitch - is a well-respected journalist and writer; and my academic and extremely well-read father recommended it to me so I ordered it from library (because I couldn't afford its £17.99 hardback price!) and devoured this SUPERB book in about 12 hours of solid reading.
I was so impressed that I then read it again from cover to cover. Apparently it's now out in paperback and could be ordered on Amazon for way under £10 (not many dollars for my American and Australasian fellow Bluelighter-bookworms).
I urge every single intelligent Bluelighter out there who's ever wondered about things like Senator McCarthy's communist witch-hunts in the early '50s; the assassinations of J.F.K and R.F.K; the "historical" bits and bobs which Dan Brown put together to write his fatuous bestseller "The Da Vinci Code; the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the Iraq War to beg, borrow or steal to lay their hands on this book.
Before reading "VoodooConspiracies" I was fairly convinced that 9/11 was a conspiracy (especially after seeing such pseudo-documentaries as "Loose Change") and am now resigned to the fact that it was almost definitely NOT a government plot to murder many, many thousands of its own citizens in order to expand its empire, wage war and get its sticky paws on lots of oil; despite these being some of the outcomes of the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent wars waged in Afghanistan and Iraq.
To close, I often find it helpful when looking at world history to apply Occam's Razor, which invariably leads to the old adage "more likely cock-up than conspiracy".
