PhreeX: Icon of Irresponsibility?

Look, Murple started this thread, so it is perfectly relevant for us to discuss Murple. And bash him, as he deserves for being such a little fuck. The fact remains -- Murple should have never posted this thread. Someone else should have, and I'm postive, WOULD have....I posted something similar but in a far less obnoxious manner in the administrative issues forum. None of us are arguing that some of the issues Murple raised need to be discussed -- I think that they most certainly do -- but Murple's raising them puts everything in bad light and permanently taints the discussion.

What would be better, would be if someone else, who is both tactful and straightforward, could make a new post highlighting these issues in a superior manner.

It's pretty simple, really....you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar...regardless of the harshness of the topic, it CAN be phrased in a more tactful and compassionate manner.

You're absolutely right. So how about we NOT make this the PhreeX vs. Murple show? I'm having a really hard time believing this thread has turned into anything constructive or entertaining.

This is absolutely fucking ridiculous. First of all, I fail to see where in the original post he was being an asshole. I think he phrased everything perfectly in fact. And besides, the point here is not whether Murple is an asshole or not. And if you can't see why that's not (or shouldn't be) the point, then it's no use even attempting to have a constructive conversation with you about this.

Reckless drug use, overdoses, dying...none of those are very happy subjects. But they're real. Very real to this community, this community of drug users, the people of Bluelight. Not everyone here was Phreex's friend, not everyone needed time before this was discussed, not everyone needed it discussed lightly rather than realistically. I would venture to say that many needed it discussed bluntly right then. When someone starts talking about taking responsibility for your drug use and avoiding overdoing it, who listens? Just about nobody. But if one of us is on the verge of death and the same subject is broached, you better believe somebody's listening.

Murple's posts raised a number of questions not only about overdose but about the attitude around here as well, questions no one else was asking at the time. The posts got attention and if left alone, they could've facilitated some much needed discussion. He struck a cord and that could've been good.

Sure, more flies with honey usually, but honestly I don't think so in this case. In this case, I think a more appropriate adage is: Strike while the iron's hot. Too bad all hope is lost for that now. Instead of discussing a very serious and important topic, we're reduced to bickering about the personal characteristics of someone who isn't even here. And if you really think that's relevant to anything, then... well, no personal attacks.

Where would I have liked to have seen this thread go? Serious discussion of the it can't happen to me, oh look it happened to someone else, but it still won't happen to me mentality that threatens so many of us, serious discussion about what leads to this reckless behavior, serious discussion about overdose, serious discussion about the things we could do to be prepared in case we're with someone when they overdose. Anything but this.

no see a lot of people have this idea wrong. Many are SURPRISED he overdosed, and sad because a person of so much knowlege wont be able to prevent many other people from hurting themselves. And its very sullen to think that himself, of so much experience and insight- he pushed his limit a bit too far. I do not condone what he did, i merely i feel its an asset lost to this message board community, but i do feel its made me think twice about my mantality.. to in a way exemplify him-but not with malice. Even the most knowlegable make mistakes.

Sigma, I never had any issue with the real issues being discussed 'while the iron was hot', so to speak.

I have issues with MURPLE MAKING THE POST in his typically OBNOXIOUS manner. I can see that you don't know him as well as I do and interpret his meaning in a very forgiving manner...

But how would someone else making the same points change anything? Even if Murple was consciously trying to be an asshole, does that change the validity of what he was trying to discuss?

I'm not trying to say you don't have a right to feel as you want to about Murple or the manner in which he communicates, but making it an issue about WHO said what rather than WHAT was said is beside the point.

I think he was trying to prevent harm from coming to other people who aren't as knowledgable about drugs and specifically their consequences as some other people are. I'm sorry that it may have been worded in a less than perfect way, but why start a whole new topic just to say all this over again?

From reading many of murple's posts, I have a hard time believing he gives a shit about anyone but himself. He would rather flame someone then give them useful advice.

Shameful.

This entire thread is a cold blister to this message board, and the admins. should be ashamed of it. Perhaps Murple did cross a line or 2 in the original thread about PhreeX's health. This, however, does not make it right to repeatedly delete his new post.

Deleting his post is reminiscent of what so many of bL's drug-user's despise; a controlling "government" who abuses their power and censors what should be allowed to be seen. Just because Admins/Mods disagreed with Murple or had personal issues with him was no reason to delete his post, which was rather appropriate I thought. Deleting his posts goes against what this message board was created for in the first place.

The arguments by those who find it necesary to discredit Murple are also completely irrelevant for the most part. Those trying to do so are only flaming Murple, bringing up no valid or constructive points for discussion. I am all for getting all sides of the story and all opinions, but please, give valid arguements or give nothing at all. The fact that you feel Murple posted such things at the wrong time is moot point. He did post them, and he has every right to have his post discussed fairly.

Going back to Murple's original post I think if people would thoroughly read it they would notice some GREAT points. I'll recap the ones I particularly enjoyed myself...

1 - knowledge is of little use if you don't base your actions on it.

2- If someone dies or goes to the hospital because of a drug overdose, that is a tragedy. When people refuse to learn from the incident and actively praise the person's drug knowledge and viciously attack anybody who doesn't follow the herd, that is just as much of a tragedy.

3- I think this is a crisis situation, and it disturbs the hell out of me that any real discussion of the problem is being stifled in the name of "respect" and "sensitivity."

...

4- If you really cared about people, you'd be more concerned with preventing future tragedies by discussing these incidents bluntly and honestly rather than squelching discussion out of some misguided (and often false) respect for these overdose cases.

-

Its time people sit down and take a serious look at what is going on here. Reason with your mind, not your heart.

im not terribly sure that deleting murple's original was wrong..

in a temporal sense, it wasn't all-kinds of super... the points that may have been stated were valid points, but many of those reading the "points" would be emotionally biased towards phreex, and hence see it as an attack.

murple partially aided that idea in his post, problematically at the very end of his post with irrefutable accusations, leaving readers with the impression perhaps of murple's undefendable attack

the only thing i can see preventing a lot of concrete arguments from being made would be the actual situation of phreex's overdose.

was it intentional or unintentional?

that alone would verify or vilify any "points" murple tried to make..

the ideas you have harvested from murple's post seem good Adam, although it would seem murple could have presented those in less words..

i also think about the utility of those points, with knowing them, what can one do to alter the end result they suggest?

the above question seems to me the better one to ask, and have thoughtfully answered, although i have many doubts as to the actual effect that discussion may yield.

if there is any real benefit to discussion of these ideas murple presented, it would be far more productive to have them reposted with strict adherence to the facts, and the facts alone

if anyone can phrase a positive reiteration of murples points, pointedly in a new thread, without fictional reference, perhaps clear-headed discussion may ensue

I don't think the specifics of whether PhreeX was attempting suicide or just made a mistake will change the merits of Murple's post one way or another.

While maybe Murple wrote the post with this one incident in mind, I think it is our imperative to expand the scope of this discussion beyond one person and let the ideas stand on their own merits. What was said applies as much to all the rest of
us as it does to PhreeX and Murple himself. We all have at one time or another pushed our limits (I know I have), and we all have made mistakes. Now is a time to go back and try and learn something from them. Let's let the drama take the backburner now.

^^^I agree with that 100%

I couldn't disagree with you more. It's completely fucked up to be sitting around talking shit about someone who isn't even here to defend themselves. Who the fuck was murple to pass judgement on someone anyway? Fuck that.

Icon of "we're all human"

I have never thought Phreex to be an icon of anything other than a well-versed and funny drug user who dedicated a lot of time to this board. Never did he state that I recall that he was above doing stupid things. I don't think that his presence here on a regular basis makes him any more responsible for the drug use of others than someone who posts infrequently. Most of the advice he gave was from experience, and he was well-liked because even when insulting people's intelligence, he did it with humor and didn't overdose it.

Murple however, has repeatedly acted arrogantly, and whenever his ass-holishness was admonished, he'd hide behind the veil of saying he was the only voice of reason on the board. Bullshit!

There are many appropriate ways to get your point across when you post on here. I have many times overstepped the lines of trying to influence people and acted arrogantly, so I certainly understand where he's coming from. His all-knowing point of view, however, gets old. He attacks people who ask ignorant and/or innocent questions and gets no respect from me. While I can appreciate the fact that he posts trip reports to "warn" people, he is a user and has done stupid things too. He is not above the guidelines of the board.

Bottom line is: Phreex has been much more of an asset to Bluelight than Murple will ever be, and the moderators and administrators reserve the rights they have to deal with him as they see fit.

I have re-opened this thread and deleted out most of the useless flames. If you have constructive comments add to this conversation then feel free to do so but further flaming will result in more edits or a final closing of the thread.

Thanks,

Thank you. I was wondering how the admins/mods feel about the whole situation. Obviously, there won't be any one opinion, but I remember reading a thread about how to deal IV drug inquiries the other day where it seemed like a lot of the "higher ups" were reconsidering some of the policy decisions of this site in light of the whole stated purpose of harm minimization and the tragedies that have struck as of late.

As for the whole Murple vs. everyone thing, I think if we could just forget WHO posted this thread and go back to what its about we'd be better off. I realize for a lot of people that is hard, I don't really know Murple or PhreeX so I have to admit emotionally it doesn't affect me more than any other tragedy (like the war, poverty, etc.) so it is probably easier for me to think about it like that. Regardlessly, though, I hope we can all come otu of this tough time a little stronger and maybe even a little wiser.

While I agree with this post on the whole:

I am all for getting all sides of the story and all opinions, but please, give valid arguements or give nothing at all.

Good lord the irony....hehehehehehe valid according to your guidelines right?

guys the fact that whoever wrote this has valid points is not really concequential the mods and admins of this board had a mate that they thought was going to die! As i assume that the mods and admins of this board are human can you blame them for not being 100% perfect in dealing with the matter. You i and the rest of the world can be assholes and bastards when we are angry and upset it is part of human nature. The mods and admins of this board may set themselves up as being perfect and utterly without fault but that is them feeding their egos and not really somthing you can blame them for. They arn;t perfect and considering that what was done was done in a time of stress and greif i think that an element of understanding for this wouldn;t go amis.

ohhh look at me getting all serious back to getting high and acting like a tit me thinks!

i respected phreex's knowledge

knowledge can be very powerful
and as i am sure phreex knew, as we should think
knowledge is nothing without the strength to use it

I apoligize if I had seemed a bit flame-ish in my original reply to this post, but that was not intended. I was in a rather interesting, "anti-government" mood at the time. Heh. I didnt mean to talk down on the Admins/Mods either, theyre great, and sure as hell well-needed here.

That said, I think maybe we should forget who said what in this thread and just ponder what was said. Its never good when lives are being lost or coming all too close to being lost. These people are our friends and family, lets keep them around, safe, and sound.

and rhyme while we do it..:p
