PhreeX: Icon of Irresponsibility?

Umm... Why exactly is murple banned?? he raised some very good points. Keep in mind that this board is surposed to be about harm minimisation. I don't think that censoring people just because you don't like what he has to say is the best thing to do... He was not trolling, he was bringing a new (and valid) viewpoint to the discussion.

yeah, what the fuck is up with that?????

opinions are like ass-holes, everyone's got one.

I think Murple was self-banned. Murple got what Murple wanted.
Murple will be unbanned according to an administrator post.

He got banned, because this thread was posted about 30 times, and each time it got canned, except for this one. And while I never knew either Murple OR PhreeX, I have to side a bit with Murple. People seem to think PhreeX is some sort of a hero because he overdosed. That's not right, it's sad, but it's not right. It's always sad when someone's in the hospital, and it's always happy when they make a recovery. But you shouldn't treat the guy like he's a hero.

I also have to agree with how reckless people are. I came to this board to learn what NOT to do, and I have. Yes, I've been sore tempted to try benadryl, but I've held back, because it's like "ok, chaces areI'm going to completely flip out, and belive it's true" not worth it. People should learn from what PhreeX did, and not make the same mistake.

The only thing I disagree with is how soon this came to when PhreeX first got admitted, and his sorta arrogant air about it. If he hadnt used PhreeX, and just used a general example, then this could've been a much better thread.

I don't think anyone looks to Phreex as a hero for overdosing. I think Phreex is on a pedestal due to his past writings and incredible knowledge of mind-altering substances.

i don't know how closely you followed the whole drama episode, or the Murple v. Admin wars but Murple basically asked to be banned. He was so upset that his posts were being deleted and closed that basically he spoke out against all the Admin's and Mod's and it caused a lot of waves, you had a large number of people who felt as Murple did and an equally if not larger number of people who shared Murple's thoughts but didn't want to hear it at that particular moment. Murple's posts started like 2 days after the whole PhreeX incident and people were not ready to see what murple had to post. Murple also posted on other threads that were devoted to sending wishes for a recovey, not a "wow why are you all worshiping him" thread and that also pissed a whole lot of people off. I don't think we have seen the last of Murple. . . . .but only time can tell.

Just because you know a lot about drugs and OD'ing doesn't make you any different than the thousands of people that OD every day w/o any knowledge of drugs.

As far as murple goes, no one is looking up to dave as an Icon. We were simply remembering how much he taught people and how much he was respected for his extensive knowledge.

So take some reading comprehension classes, and have some respect for someone during a hard time. You never thought to say anything before his down fall. So, why now?

This is very different from those who just od. it has nothing to do with the fact Dave had extensive drug knowledge, but everything to do with the fact he wanted to help. He dedicated numerous evenings to helping people out. He dedicated massive time along with me to begin a group called RISC where we provided people with unbias information about the dangers of drugs. He isn't an Icon because of his knowledge or because of his drugs use/OD, but he is a great person because he wanted to help others with the same pains he suffered. Too bad he just couldn't help himself soon enough.

Thanks,
Samantha

I completely agree. Every single human has the ability to die. If someone actually wanted to die they would die. If It was an attempt they probably didn't really want to die.

Gotta love the asshole that ingests research chemicals (murple) judging people that use any drugs wrecklessly or not. I think alot of good can come out of this, and I hope people realize what you know doesn't mean shit if you don't live by it.

From my personal experience with phreex, he was very informed concerning his own drug use. If he dies or is near death from a drug overdose, it is likely intentional. Unfortunately, his behavior was often overly dramatic and severe, as in this case. Phreex had a rare sense of humor and a good intellect, and this incident should not be grouped in with "rippers" ignorance in his fatal overdose. Murple has no apprehension in injecting experimental drugs like 5-meo-dipt, but attacks some of Phreex's unconventional methods of drugs use. Im glad muple was banned; ive rarely seen him contribute anything of value, and he should of showed "respect" by shutting up when he had the chance. Anyone who sides with murple obviously did not know phreex personally.

First of all, this is pretty bullshit.

"Reckless" is not quite the appropriate word to describe how Murple was using research chemicals.

He used them more as if he was running human trials on himself. And he based his doses on previously existing information. If he had been dosing blindly or trying to push the limits, I'd say "reckless" would be appropriate, but that's not how it happened.

Also, I respect you. And I've always gotten the impression from you that I get the same back.

But like I said on DS yesterday, I think it's unfair you criticize someone else for doing the exact same thing I do but you never call me out on it.

A few years ago, calling my drug use "reckless" would have been an understatement. I was taking whatever drugs I could get, taking absurd quantities and mixing up to five different drugs in a single night.

But anyone who follows my posts knows I'm the first one to criticize others for using that way. The reason, like Murple's reason, is that I learned from my mistakes and the mistakes of the people around me.

Murple's trip reports on research chemicals were from years and years ago. He doesn't even use them anymore.

And I had stopped using drugs recklessly and excessively back in 1999 because I recognized the adverse effects happening to me and that even though I had friends that I couldn't keep up with, it was truly amazing I never overdosed and beyond truly amazing my friends never overdosed.

The reason I'm criticical of other people who use recklessly now is for no reason other than trying to make others aware of the magnitude of what they're doing so they don't die. Whether the person I'm criticizing gets what I'm saying or even if someone else just reading the thread gets it. All I did was needlessly endanger myself because there was absolutely nothing to get from pushing the limits other than ruining my life. And anyone else I knew using drugs the same way ended up ruining their lives, too, even if only temporarily. It's just not worth it.

In my opinion, the only thing you should have been criticizing Murple of in this case was being insensitive.

I think alot of good can come out of this, and I hope people realize what you know doesn't mean shit if you don't live by it.

On the otherhand, it was a joy to read this one simple sentence. Because it's oh-so-true.

And I would like to assure everyone here that likely the majority of the really hardcore users telling others how NOT to use drugs either didn't or don't heed their own advice and the reason they tell you not to do this or that is so you don't make their mistakes or end up like them.

I too get a little pissed that everyone is getting so emotional and deep over someone who chose to fuck himself up with drugs.

But... it's the sort of thing you keep quiet about. You have no right to criticise peoples emotions just to make your clever point.

Um, Murple most certainly engaged in reckless activities! He admitted to combining MAOIs AND MDMA on more than one occasion! If that isn't reckless I don't know what is....

Murple is in no place to talk about irresponsibility. He's a fool who will one minute be raving about a RC, then he'll take too much, have an unpleasant experience and start blackmouthing the drug to everyone...even though a few months earlier he was all over it. If you don't believe me, ask people who have been on newsgroups for years.

What a hypocrite and attention-mongerer.

I think his point was that we ALL should learn from the mistakes that many of us have made over the years. Maybe he said it in the wrong way, but the point stands.

Glad to see this thread here, as it disappeared when it was first posted.

My first post said something to the effect of using tact, blah blah blah. I posted it because I thought maybe I could verbalize what those more emotional about the whole thing were trying to get across to Murple. That said, even then I agreed almost entirely with what he had to say.

For those of you bashing him now, shame on you. So maybe it could've been done in a more compassionate way (although I think it was fine like it was), but all in all he had a damn good point. A point that is all too often forgotten. We have to be real about what can happen and what is happening. Stifling all criticism of reckless drug use just because the person in question is a friend of yours...I don't think there's any place for that on a public message board, a message board that claims to be a free exchange of information on drugs and harm minimization.

As for the timing, no, no one had much to say before the overdose. But I think that when a tragedy like that occurs, it's the perfect time to discuss what behaviors led to it and how to avoid it happening again. Seeing what a tremendous impact your reckless behavior can have on your own life and that of your family and friends, by way of witnessing it happening with someone else close to you, well that's going to be a hell of a lot more effective than just talking about it when everybody's doing fine. Don't you think?

Reread Murple's post. I can see that some of you haven't. These parts specifically:

I've never done anything (so far) to land myself in a coma or grave, but I've certainly done some stupid shit with drugs. I wrote up my experiences and posted them to the internet, hoping that people would learn from them and not repeat my mistakes.

This is only March 9, and so far this year there's already been two deaths (one possibly not drug related, too early to tell) and one near death. I would think that this would have people seriously questioning what kind of behaviors and attitudes led to this... instead, I'm mostly seeing a pack mentality that proclaims it a social sin to mention the deaths in any way other than to sing the praises of the victim.

If you want to praise people like PhreeX and Ripper, great. Praise their other good qualities. Don't sing false praises about what god-like drug experts and role-models they were.

You can make your personal attacks on Murple all you want but it does nothing to disprove his points. Those points should be the important part of this thread, not a discussion of Murple's character. Right?

Maybe if Murple wasn't an asshole he wouldn't get flamed. He talks alot of shit in the wrong places at the wrong times and I'm glad he got banned. He has the biggest fucking ego in the world to judge people when he is doing shit that is imo is just as fucking dangerous, he used untested research chemicals, and though he used some precaution, he was still russian roulette. Its not what he says that makes him an asshole, just how he says it. Also, alot of what he said was bullshit also, most drug users outside of the internet are responsible while most drug users on the internet arean't... please.
And of course
"Don't sing false praises about what god-like drug experts and role-models they were."
Phreex knew a fuckload more about drugs then Murple did and was a drug expert.

How about we NOT make this the PhreeX vs. Murple show? Especially since neither one of them have the ability to come here and talk their own shit?
