sorry, misread the post, been doing a lot of that lately

The biosynthesis of tryptophan after the shikimate pathway doesn't involve indole, it would be a smelly waste :(

no prob I often read something different to what is written :) shopfitters versus shoplifters etc

I know I have seen it somewhere, there is a paper possibly a phd from an american uni on the biosynthesis of tryptamines. i'll see if I can find it. if anyone else has it could they post a link thanks.

pure indole free of scatole is actually pleasant smelling in low less tha 5% conc. the bad smell is almost entirely due to scatole.

Sorry I have been posting so much, but I meant to register years ago, and it is all this bottled up stuff just now coming out!

As far as the topic is concerned, instead of recombinent techniques, how about embarking upon a long term breeding (artificial selection type) experiment, by using a simple, yet highly adaptable bacteria? Something which has been shown to mutate into new sub-species (given conditions/needs) within 10-20 generations. Just a thought :)
