I just moved north of Big Bend National Park in Southern West Texas. When I found out I was to move here, I immediately did research on the region. Turns out, peyote is very abundant in these parts. This means that, like mushrooms before, I will search until i learn the art of finding peyote. Does anyone have any tips? Has anyone visited Big Bend?
thanks

A tip: don't take too much, because it takes a very, very long time to grow, and that would be destructive to the supply of the plant.

Peyote is on the brink of extinction in the wild. Leave them alone and use san pedro.

I would not remove the cactus from soil, obviously when I find a patch I am going cut the tops. Solves the extinction problem. Anyone have any better responses?
ps: ive eaten peyote, as well as san pedro and peruvian torch, there is a reason peyote is more sought after.

Be careful. Picking plants in the wild is never fully safe; always be sure of what you're picking if you plan on ingesting it.

I'm not an expert, but can't you extract mescaline while still leaving the plant intact? Maybe I'm thinking of something else but I thought I'd heard this somewhere.

There is no better response than leave wild peyote alone.

I dont plan on using the cactus as a money crop. I plan on enjoying an experience, and I still intend to. I have read many journals stating that peyote is extremely abundant in the big bend. I dont doubt it, as there are many paintings and pictures of sitegrounds in the big bend where the buttons are clearly visible. Due to your ignorance in the ways of preserving the cactus, I seriously doubt you can give me any information?

Sounds like you are pretty intent on your plans, so at least I would suggest taking buttons from many multiples of plants.. maybe only one button per cactus... and only take what you need, not a huge trashbag. Maybe some thanks to the plants for sharing themselves with you would be nice too. :)

Also don't get caught, if you are busted you will be in deep shit, especially on a state park in Texas.8(

Thank you, the top of a button from different patches wouldn't be so bad. the cacti would regenerate. And I've thought about growing it, but I want the experience of spending an entire day searching, eating at about midnight or later. watching that beautiful west tx sunrise. let you guys know as I will be traveling south this weekend.

i hope you know how to properly harvest part of a Loph without damaging the part that remains. if done correctly they will pup and continue to grow but it takes a long, long time.

peppermint fear you cannot exctract mescaline while leaving the plant intact, you might be thinking about opium which damages the poppy pods but leaves the remainder of the plant unharmed

There's one thing I know for sure. Encouraging kids who want to trip to go out hacking at 20 year old wild peyote cacti with knives isn't the way to ensure their long-term survival.

Maybe it would, maybe it wouldn't. It doesn't sound like you care either way :\

here's an idea: since it's "going extinct" take care of/raise the same amount you eat. let it be fruitful and multiply under your supervision, replant once they're big enough...in your flowerbed ;)

Silly westerners and their belief they own the whole planet. If it were me and I was insistent on harvesting wild peyote, I would not only just harvest the button top, but I would also transplant 1 young cactus grown from seed into the wild for every button I harvested.

edit: just looked up and it seems that the guy before me pretty much said the same thing 8)

I have a friend who claims to have grafted peyote onto San Pedro's, for one is that possible? And if used like this, eg. grown peyote wouldn't you assume the envoronmental issues are nullified? The oppurtunityto take peyote is too great to give up, plus the mescaline can be crystalline if i choose to have it further broken down by said "friend"

It is very possible, and is often done. Doing so speeds up the maturation time for peyote significantly. Goes from over a decade to just a few years.

Yup, it's there. I found two buttons in the Big Bend, one of impressive size. Where exactly do you live? I stayed on the Terlingua Ranch inches from the park. Go to Lajitas and send back pictures of the Goat Mayor!
