[Peyote Subthread] In The Wild

^^^ thanks for the links. The guy in the Dalllas Obverver article is the fellow I was speaking of. I still have to disagree about leaving it alone though. If you are a true seeker and want to go wildcraft a sacred plant in an EXTREMELY dangerous and hostile part of the world, more power to you. Just realize that hunting peyote is way harder than traipsing through a cow field hunting mushrooms. The hunting is really better in San Luis Potosi than it is in Texas anyway.

Another plus about this area of the world is that nice old Mexican women will just give you large cuttings of P. Torch or San Pedro if you just ask nicely and maybe bring them some citrus fruit or something.

When you harvest the Peyote you need to make one uniform cut diagonally across the meat of the plant. Please, make sure that enough is there so that it sits above the soil.

I'd urge you to reconsider, but if you're going to do it do it right.

:\

All this talk of peyote has gotten into my brain...I dreamt I was the recipient of a nice bundle of dried buttons. I had no ethical qualms. :)

That said, I agree with Enod up there, do it right. But really, leave them alone or grow your own. I think the act of growing a sacred plant is more empowering then 'hunting' as such....peyote isn't all that hard to identify, but to grow it is quite tiresome.

dude no offense but honestly he is going to pick them not matter what you say, so instead of saying don't do it and point out the same thing over and over give the boy some helpful advice, I lived in Texas when I was younger and there was peyote al over the damn place on my aunts farm in west Texas, so yes it definitely is there, and no there aren't tons of people hunting around for it because most people don't use psychedelics. I don;t know how to pick them because I was to young but my aunt was clear about what exactly it was. Also you guys act like that if you lived there that you wouldn't pick some buttons yourself. I think its cool to pick some stuff out of the wild and as long as you don't over do it there is no reason not to indulge once you find some.

I strongly disagree as it may do some good to him it certainly won't do any good to peyote.
Pardon me but I don't see how an egoistic kid is more important that an endangered species.
What's more, for the same reason I doubt he could have a useful trip off it, as a postmortem guilt complex won't do any good whatsoever.
What's he gonna do, post a "I Helped Murder Peyote But Peyote Helped Me Lead A Useful Life" trip report? Gimme a break.
He's just gonna feel sick for hours and afterwards claim that he got really out there.

Having grown up in an area where peyote is more or less abundant, I would have to disagree with you all saying it is going extinct in the wild. It is true though that if every one knew the areas where buttons are growing the cactus would probably start to disappear. The spots that I harvest buttons are in a few very specific spots I know of about a forty-five minute four wheel drive and hour hike from where I live. i was shown these areas by a very good navajo friend of mine, and he taught me the proper way to harvest and consume them. He also taught me about the spirituality aspect of the buttons as well which includes not ever selling them, just barter. Seeing as my friend taught me to respect peyote for the amazing thing it is, I have returned to these spots only a few times harvesting only the buttons I need for myself and my lady. For the guy asking how many buttons to eat, it depends on the size of them for one, and what type of experience you are looking for. Dry buttons range from the size of a fifty cent piece to the size of the whole palm of your hand. I recommend eating five to ten small buttons for a mild experience, or ten to fifteen buttons for a more intense experience. Respect the cactus and you won't have to worry about any negative vibes/trips from it.

Dude, no offense, but I sure as hell wouldn't pick wild peyote to eat. I don't really want to further the death of a wil plant. Anyone who is saying its adundant 'in my area' or watever- thats kinda the point; it used to be abundant in a lot MORE areas. Just grow them or take San Pedro, there is no need to kill something simply to trip on it. My helpful adivice is DON'T TOUCH THEM. They are endangered; I'd say the same thing about anything endangered, especially if there are other valid sources for mescaline, plus you can grow you own.

Its pointless diagreeing with the facts.

Good message to preserve: don't pick wild Peyote. You can substitute with a number of other types of cacti like San Pedro or Peruvian Torch.
