Peaches Geldof - at the going down of the sun etc

How do you know he wasnt a complete cunt in real life, for example?

How long do you have to know someone before you can be certain they arn't a complete cunt tho? People show you different sides of their character depending on the nature of the interaction. Peter Sutcliffe was considered a perfect gentlemen by most of the women he knew in everyday life.

Sutcliffes thinking on fashion was certainly ahead of it's time. Wearing green v-necks over the legs for example.

I still think to know someone takes years of living with them. And even then you might never get to the bottom of them. Every woman you talk to has always met a "lovely" bloke who was so "supportive" until they started living together. Then after 2 weeks they start to just cock their legs and fart.

Seeing someone in a good film or someone who'se written a great song gives you as good idea of the person as superficially knowing them.

Your humour-detector seems to fail rather frequently, MDB. Alternatively, there's rarely enough humour in posts for you to detect. My post wasn't entirely serious though just so ya know.

I do think the link between youth and "tormented genius" is overstated though. There will always be people who don't last very long. Some of those people will be talented. Some of those talented people will have personal issues. I think we over-romanticise youthdom in general. Not saying I don't myself cos I do. I just think it's a bit overdone. This is entirely likely due to being considerably older than I ever intended to be admittedly.

Time for the 'MDB is a cunt who takes to many drugs but is an alright bloke once youve known him for 16 years appreciation megathread' =D

yeah probably the former case re humour, especially of the online variety, and am not quite as bad at picking up on it IRL.

When i was around 21 and some girl was nagging me about smoking being bad for my health i said that i didnt care as i didnt expect to live longer than 30 anyway. I was as full of shit then as i am now.

No appreciation thread for me thanks SM, i would become even more insufferable otherwise. :D

How old did you originally intend to get, Shambles?

21 at most. 21 being an arbitrary figure really. 20 was the original plan. Dunno how it got extended to 21. Presumably cos I got to 20 and didn't die. 25 was another distinct possibility cos of the millennial thing (I was a 1/4 century at the turn of the century and that seemed somehow significant for a long time... right up til somewhere around age 25 actually). Myself and my then best friend had some kinda pact involving death by misadventure at differing ages (cos he was a few years older than me so had to add extra years to fit). That lasted for surprisingly long time. Long past the time you'd think sanity would take over. I really did want to die young, but really didn't want to have to do it myself. That seems to be cheating somehow.

I don't want to die young now. That would be ridiculous as I am old. I do 'get' the Cult of Youth completely though. It's a shame the only known cure for such thing is to get old. Or at least get older. Getting actually old is a whole other matter. A matter I'll deal with once I'm actually old. And I get to decide when I'm actually old. I think maybe that's what's missing from the Cult of Youth stuff.
