We all are musical snobs now, or not I guess...apparently even a casual listener can hear a difference between 48k and 41k. I know I can.

In a way, but I find that musical media snobbery to be analogous to the bland mass lager vs. bold craft brew snobbery.

A while ago I sort of atained a compromise with the convenience of digital media portability (record players don't work well in cars, etc.). With my turntable, via mixer to the line-in on my laptop with studio headphones monitoring with Audacity software I carefully kept recording level high, but safely below distortion and recorded a bunch of vinyl to 192k WAV and FLAC files. Much better than CD's, but a bit of labour involved.

yeah that really is pretty damn good, laika. chill as fuq and then there's like a suggestion of a robot laser storm and then chill as fuq again :D

Haha thanks man. The robot laser storm was me getting bored and seeing if I could branch out and jump back in.

Maybe I should do more synth tracks but I love the feel of a guitar so much.

O heck ya. Now, I am going beyond my safe zone of knowledge...but I think it is fair to say that beyond the pleasant 'coloring' analogue has...vinyl mastered from tape (or 24b/48k) can actually hold more information than a redbook (16b/41k) CD...thus your high rez needle drops will sound better than CDs (assuming the record wasn't mastered from some crappy 16b master of course).

For what it is worth, I went to 24b/48k for recording a couple years ago and won't look back. Since I don't have a blue ray ROM, and wind up sharing my recordings in 16b anyway...haven't found much reason to record in any higher resolution...come to think of it, I am not sure I've even heard a 24b 192k file...I bet there is a whole sonic world I am missing. :) Next thing I lay down, I'll try it at that resolution for gigglez.

Lol yeah he did end up canning it and fell on the "it was a marketing thing." Slacker..

Just A Guy - Illinois is probably the best album to get started with, work in any direction through his discography after that. I'd recommend Age of Adz after that just because of how funky and different it was from all of his other stuff.

Been listening to AoA for the last hour -- this stuff is great. It's like Porcupine Tree meets ELO with a twist. Or something. Love it.

I also record 24-bit/48k. The higher dynamic range gives me more room for post-processing, and leaves me with some serious crunch. (I play drums.)

Im not a DJ, I habea decent setup. You'd not notice the difference between FLAC and 320, or even 92, tbph. If you're not playing serious venues, a lot of this stuff is like the Emperor's great new clothes.

I'm not claiming there's no difference, but that a lot of audiophiles get sold snake oil. Sorry, it just is that way. "Audio woo", it's called, and a lot of the claims made by manufacturers don't stand up to rigour. Do I, as a home listener, need FLAC, really? Spend your momey how you want to, just be informed and rational.

Yeah, idk why, but the newest game on the PS4 and HDTV still isn't quite as good as GTA San Andreas in my poxy teenage bedroom. Pretty sure throwing money will fix it.

Wait, flac isn't really a format as much as a container half the size of the thing you are containing.....a 'lossless' means of compressing a file...or so I understand it.

Either way, I have to admit that some of the higher rez MP3s (like the ones encoded at 300 or above sound just like their respective uncompressed formats. Still, for archiving I think flac is the way to go since stuff is always getting better and even the causal listener can finally hear how shitty their MP3s from 10 years ago actually sounded all along. :) Using flac, no need to update the crappy formats of the past.

none of that is as good as ball in a cup imho

*grumble* it's not that I don't have any vinyl, it's that I have nothing to play'em on. And as far as sound quality goes, I only notice the difference between decent and garbage headphones (usually I have the latter, since I break a couple pairs every year). Y'all make me feel like a plebeian. I'd do better if I was willing to spend money on things that aren't psychoactive.....then again I dropped like $70 seeing the same movie 6 times last month, yet I'm getting gaunt because I eat skimpy, cheapass vegetarian meals. LOL, my priorities are clearly not in order.

Anyway, women's half-pipe was great, our ladies killed it and I was quite absorbed/excited throughout.

Stupid NBC wants me to have cable/satellite or somesuch nonsense to watch live. Bastards.

I didn't intend for you to feel that way Never Knows Best? I'm really broke myself and am stuck using the same M1 studio monitors I purchased way back in the 90s for all of these sonic comparisons.

Edit: haa haa I had on a documentary on 50s sitcoms and heard 'Father Knows Best' when I was typing out Never Knows Best's name. Crazy mind, I need to get off the PC and sleep.

wat movie was it?

Frozen, slightly more than half of those viewings were during a manic episode (that I was self-medicating my way through with meth), it was like my security blanket. Otherwise I probably would have only ended up seeing it 5 times, kinda overdid it and got sick of it. Until it comes out on DVD next month. >_>

It feels really sketchy being the guy on hard drugs at a Disney musical. My interests are diverse and dissonant, what can I say?

And has TAC been around lately? Feel like I haven't seen him in a while.

ugh, i did too much 3-meo-pcp.

ran around outside naked in the cold for a bit
Did you fight any police? ;)

That's pretty crazy if you really ran naked, it's negative -8 or so here, and I imagine it's cold there with the all the snow.

I think I saw TAC post awhile ago, another great poster gone ghost. :( Hopefully he's of doing great things!
