I don't know what needs to happen. I want to believe that we have the ability to rise up out of this, but it's the same cycle repeating over and over again. A lot of people want to be told what to think, and a few people really want to have power over others. It's the logical course for it to take. The only thing that will stop it is if we can get rid of that aspect of human nature somehow. I mean, you and I, and probably anyone who might reply to this, we just want to live our lives, personally I'd love it if we could all get along, not sure why we shouldn't be able to since we're all humans and want the same basic things out of life, like love, happiness, safety, fulfillment, and so on. But there are some people who want something else. The most common form it takes is greed for material wealth. Everyone wants to be comfortable, to be able to support themselves and their people. But some people want more, no matter how much they have. They'll do whatever it takes, they may even make decisions that hurt other people to get it. They might even topple economies, start wars, or drum up one half of the people against the other, twisting something in their nature against one another, so they can be richer and more influential. It's really about the power. Some people want power over everyone else. I don't get it, but it's there, and if it wasn't this group of sociopaths, it would be another.

I try really hard to believe that this can change. I really hope it does.

Yeah, it seems like we're really living the Kali Yuga.

^Had to look up 'Kali Yuga'. Apt analogy my friend.

I just read this short article about endangered carnivorous plants on the BBC, quite interesting. Figure some of y'all might enjoy it. Reminds me of how peyote is so endangered due to poaching. I think that people in general don't see poaching a plant as 'poaching' so to speak, but in reality it can be horribly destructive and leave an entire species extinct.

Is anyone into skydiving?

Ive been tandem twice, and took a class to jump solo. Going tommorrow, probably jump twice...

It is such a rush. Feel like I am on meth for the next two days. My mind has never felt so clear except when plumiting to the earth. First time had me hooked, like I just have to do this.

Its an expensive sport, but I am gonna look at it like an investment. Learn enough and eventually I can get paid to teach/do and travel the world with a badass job. Maybe it will happen, maybe it wont. I havent found anything else that seems near as appealing though.

I find myself at home alone with nothing to do for the first time in quite a while. I am so used to always being busy with things or spending time with friends, I find this a bit disconcerting. At first I spend several hours reading a book, The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. An engrossing tale, though after having just read both of the Kingkille.

Dude, I JUST finished Words Of Radiance last night. It took about 300 pages for The Way Of Kings toreally get into it. It felt like he was throwing too much at me and it was overwhelming. I think I read both Stormlight Archives books in 2.5 weeks once I got started. Never have I been so sad to see a book end at page 1298 :-(. Next one isnt due out til next fall, fuuuuuuuuck.

I have Wizards First Rule by Terry Goodkind on deck. I have read two books in the series, out of order. Figure I might start at the beginning.

I read The Wheel Of Time twice over the past 3 years. So good.

Will have to look into the Kingkiller Chronicles.

Thanks

I was looking to get in to The Wheel of Time, but I thought it would be a bit convoluted due to the length. It's not even that it would bore me or anything, but I figured the story would be a bit complex. Might give it a shot after all (and after I get through these weird books on Alchemy from the 70s I found at the local book shops)

You guys need to read The Malazan Book of the Fallen and pretty much anything by Joe Abercrombie. If you like fantasy. Brutal and grim.

Fuck that shit. I love fantasy books. You guys should read the Kingkiller Chronicles. Some of the best things I've ever read. Really, really beautiful.

Great books. The characters are a bit undeveloped until the last 3 books which were written by a different guy after the author died, but the world he describes is amazing, very satisfying books. One of my favorites.

Another I strongly recommend is the Sword of Truth series. The characters in those books are absolutely beautiful, and they';re pretty intense philosophical after the first few. Gorgeous books.

Yeah I've read the Wheel of Time all the way through 4 times since I was a young teenager. You absolutely will love the Sword of Truth. The 6th book in the series is one of my favorite things I've ever read. But honestly the Kingkiller Chronicles are some of the most beautiful things I've ever read, it's poetic and incredible. I'm really bummed that he has only written 2 of them so far, and apparently he's quite slow with them.

TAC, I can't believe you're knocking on fantasy. You're missing some great shit.

Hope everything turns out okay Bagseed!<3
thanks man

at least the fact that mankind is pretty insignificant overall helps me to stay calm (that and scooping kratom of course ;) )

also, learning the harmonica is pretty fun. I even managed to pull off a bended note right now, allbeit not a clean one. bending is probably the hardest technique on the harmonica but you really need it for playing blues :D

I love the sword of truth series. Goodkind is an amazing author. May have to go back and re-read those books now that I'm thinking about it. Richard and Kahlan are such great characters. The books really do get quite philosophical towards the end.

Second timd Ive seen Mazalan Book of the Fallen reccomended. Its going on the list.

Sometimes it seems there is more truth in fantasy books than non fiction, but YMMV.

Did my first solo skydive today. So beautiful. Im so fucking hooked.

Yeah, the 6th book is my favorite, it's so beautiful, where Richard gets kidnapped by Nicci and taken to the old world to live as a normal person there, and he's so inspiring with his personality that he makes everyone realize what life is really about and Nicci has a breakthrough and he starts a revolution in the old world. I've read the series twice and both times it's made me cry throughout the book.

Yeah Goodkind writes characters so well, they're real people to me, I've never cared about any characters as much. I was so sad when I finished them. He is writing a shorter series that takes place afterwards but they're not as good. Still worth reading, but the original series is perfect.

The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss are maybe even better if that's possible. You should read those, although only the first 2 are written. It's written in third person occasionally, in the present with the main character telling the story of his life, the vast majority is him telling the story and it's in first person. I thought it would be weird but it's amazing, it's so intimate with his character and he's an awesome character. The books are written so beautifully, it's poetic and evocative, and funny too. It's been phenomenally enjoyable to read, and also very wise.

The Stormlight Archives series are really good too, written by Brandon Sanderson who finished the Wheel of Time when Jordan died (he also wrote the 3-book Mistborn series which is really cool and also gets pretty philosophical by the end). A very different sort of world, interesting characters, and pretty inspiring too so far. I'm 3/4 of the way through the first book (they're like 1200+ pages each), but he's only written the first 2 so far.

But yeah, GOOD fantasy is my favorite thing to read for sure. It's really cool to immerse yourself in a totally different world with its own characteristics and people and so on, but even more than that, all of my favorite fantasy books contain many important observations about life and human nature. Some of the wisest things I have read are in fantasy books.

My ex thought fantasy books were stupid, she was like, what's the point of reading something not real? It always annoyed the shit out of me particularly since she would scoff at me for it and tell me I was wasting my time. But my girlfriend now loves them like I do, it's one of the reasons she messaged me on Ok Cupid. it's so cool being able to share that. :) And I get to know more about more stuff she liked and read it.

Haha, I know, I know, just trolling you guys a little bit. My personal preference is nonfiction, because I want to learn as much as possible. Most people also find it shocking that I hardly ever watch movies or TV shows, for much the same reason.

Wavy Gravy, I keep thinking your THR be wise of your avatart for some reason!

That was unintended hahah. I just changed my picture from a Moody Blues album cover, to a picture of cream gravy on biscuits lol

I'm personally a fan of sci-fi, to me it's something between fantasy and more grounded stuff. A lot of it ends up being commentary on society and I quite enjoy it.

nd read it.

That book is one of the two I read. Pretty inspiring, I teared up at the end (probably I think) when shit hit the fan. Trying not to throw out any spoilers but you know what I am talking about.

I agree with everything you said. If there is no point, underlying meaning, social commentary, etc I cant really get into a fantasy/sci fi book. Someone who can create an entire world and have its characters strive for integrity and right living is inspiring when the one we live in does not seem to so much
