Dude, this guy I know (friend of a friend) had just come back from an ayahuasca retreat in Central Texas last year when I saw him; it was all he could freakin' talk about. It was so pretentious sounding, and he was like, "Oh dude it was only $400 it was a real deal!" I'm like... I could get a sheet or two of acid for that much like Christ man. I don't need no 'shaman' touching me and chanting and shit while I trip.

It would be a great tragedy if psychedelics were legalized only for 'medicinal' use. Who the heck wants to trip balls in a doctor's clinic?
 
I've been tuning into the dark side of psychedelics - gurus, egos, abuse, control all that. You know you get these real egotistical figures doing weird shit with their adherents and people just lap it up. Psychedelics can be a real minefield when it comes to spirituality etc. It kind of concerns me that as psychedelics get mainstreamed and trending, we're going to see more and more of this shady side - just because of the whole internet culture popularity contest, these kind of egotistical loud figures tend to rise to the top.

Have any of you come across that kind of thing IRL or online?

I dunno, I guess some of my psychedelic exuberance is wearing off, as would be expected when the rest of the world finds out about something special that you like very much. Maybe the psychedelic backlash will come from within the community as it becomes mainstreamed, rather than from the outside.

Yeah, or even in one of these fake ass luxurious retreat centres. Agh whatever, I've always said that people can use psychedelics however they want. I suppose I'm just worried about them harming other people, or people getting sucked into psychedelic nonsense culty shit.

He's a really varied artist. I think in 100 years people will remember his music as something genius. He's always played into that hype, especially in the early days, but I think it's true. His stuff is so emotionally touching, wildly diverse, yet inviting, approachable and inspiring to so many other artists. I've never heard his music and thought "I can never make something that good", it's always more like "I want to make something that good!"

Agreed. He can pull off so many different styles, from ambient to more "danceable" techno and then some weird psychedelic glitchy stuff ... and somehow it all still sounds so recognizeably like himself, with his own signature sound.

I can't pick a favorite track but I really like his take on this track by Luke Vibert :

Regarding the dark side of pyschedelics, this is for sure one of the most morbid stories I've heard:

Chile newborn 'dies in sect ritual' - BBC News



Somehow it is always Ayahuasca that seems to bring out this kind of cult madness. I guess it makes a convincing argument against mixing powerful mind altering drugs and religion.

I've thought about this, and there must be some people that go there that are experienced with psychedelics. So I believe that the shamans must do something right, otherwise people'd just be laughing at the complete absurdity of the situation. How I'd like to know....... Maybe it's also because I don't understand the depth and impact of ayahuasca just yet

I actually saw yesterday that a festival I go to every year, has a page that said that Aphex Twin would have headlined with Florian Hecker, unannounced but the page is there wide and clear. Postponed till next year of course. THEN you could've been jealous @Img_9999 =D =D
 
I actually had the good fortune of seeing Richard D James performing live a couple of years ago in London. It was insane, he played a very "noise" oriented set though, lol, I guess he was in his anti-pop mood. That night was insane, I got to see a bunch of artist I really like that would probably never show up down here.

It sounds to me like they might have been worshipping the god Molech which was well known for burnt child sacrifices. Talk about a sick religion. You should read up on Molech. Unimaginable shit there.

You have a good "scene" in your country?
Before COVID me and a friend would almost go somewhere every week, different cities, different clubs. Only now we realize how spoiled we were.

From what has surfaced about the story, they were into that whole "2012 end of the world" stuff that was going on at the time, but in an ayahuasca induced delusion the cult leader became convinced that if they burned his own newborn they would prevent the world from ending. What blows my mind is how he convinced a bunch of people to actually go about that murderous act.

Seriously though sometimes people do shit that most find unimaginable. Evil is real.

I mean, yeah, in this city specifically there are a lot of artists and before covid nightlife never stopped here. There was always something to do. There is a big "Fusion Jazz/Jazz rock" scene here for whatever reason. A lot of punk, hardcore and metal bands. And the Techno scene is pretty active, and I feel the sound people are making here has kind of its own identity. And of course Urban Latin music is huge here but I don't really participate of that subculture. Well known foreign acts were also regularly visiting, but shows are a bit expensive, I guess because of the logistic of a transatlantic/intercontinental trip.

I guess it doesn't really compare to Europe or the US, where touring is a lot easier and cheaper for bands I suppose, but I would say we have a pretty decent musical scene. The only thing lacking here are festivals, there are only a few each year and are mostly overpriced. I prefer the smaller ones with local bands, even though you don't have any big names they are always a good time.
