I'm trying to decide on a new laptop to get for all my music production. My budget is around $700 but I'm not trying to spend ALL of it if possible. It seems like everyone uses macbooks for music production, but macs are way too expensive for what you get.

Fuck Apple computers, overpriced shiny toys with lackluster hardware.

I got an ASUS laptop for 1200 that kicks the shit out of a macbook pro double the price

if you want a mac
just buy soemthing with an intel chipset and install mac os.
same shit.

Roger, yo, so I'll be around your area come thanksgiving (booking flights with my mom today), and I'd love to meet up at some point if you are gonna be around (at least have a beer or something). Honestly I can't wait to get home. Its been 9 or so months since I've actually been home. Home cook meals from your mom or dad some how always warms the heart, and sleeping in the bed that you've lied in for years upon years is something that I just can't find else where. Not often do I say I want to go to texas :P

I've tried macs and pc. I'm a pc user, but had to use a Mac for a year or so. I found that I just didn't enjoy macs. For daily functions that mac promotes as easier to use, I found to be annoying, and that I much rather use a PC. I mean fuck, the tool bar is one of the most basic and utilitarian tools that exists, but nooooo, mac decides expose is sooooo much better. fuck expose, it is annoying and not as fast/convenient in viewing the windows that are open.

Also being a downloader and gamer, pc works for me so much better

Hey hey hey. I love my Mac. I like the whole Apple vibe. I like that the OS and computers are designed symbiotically, so that they can perform together optimally. I like the very elegant, intuitive, and organic interface. I like the fact that viruses and spyware are NON-existent for all intents and purposes.

I also like the fact that for a computer musician like myself, everything is really easy, and all the hardware and software works seamlessly.

Y'all can say what you want, but you'll never tear me away from my overpriced shiny white machines.

^ Hah, funny. I was just at my local music shop testing out the Axiom and Axiom Pro model controllers.

And, if you've got one, I feel sorry for you. :p They are made SO cheaply it's not even funny. The key action feels horrible, not to mention that the keys make obnoxious clacking noises if you hit them with any force (I'm a piano player, don't mind my griping), but more importantly they're held together so feebly that the showroom models at the shop were literally falling apart.

But I mean, I understand that they're not a bad option for a budding music producer on a budget.

Right now I'm in the market for a reasonably-priced full-weighted 88-key keyboard MIDI controller, and am discovering to my dismay that they DON'T friggin' exist! The cheapest controller in production that doesn't feel like a toy is over $1k USD. Blargh.

A friend of mine has the Axiom 25 and loves it. Shows promising results, too. He's had it for a long time and made a lot of awesome electro with it.

Lol I wish I had a midi controller/keyboard, I was talking about the laptop he posted

The one I posted, the Axiom 25, is only $175. I like it for the price, and it has pretty much everything I need.

^^ Oh, you've no idea how I'd love to -- but I must wake up in a mere 8.5 hours, and I do value my beauty sleep more than my drugs.

And with that I bid thee adieu and goodnight.

Dunno what kind of specs the programs you use require, but when I was looking at laptops a few weeks ago I thought something like these looked like the best option:

I eventually settled on some new RAM (4GB) and a 640GB HDD for my current system, and an upgrade to Windows 7 which is peanuts at my uni bookstore. My HDD package was sitting on my bed when I got home tonight, YAY! Just gotta get Win7 installed and I'll be up and running with fat storage soon enough.

I'd recommend checking craig's list for a used controller.. i got an x-board 49 (i think they are no longer in production but its a decent lower end one like the axioms) for 50 bucks a few months ago, in very good condition. i'd also say get one with more than 25 keys, as that can be kind of limiting

Behringer, whilst atrocious if your passing audio through their material, make decent, cheap MIDI controllers. They don't have a superb action, and the rotarys and sliders can be sort of stiff, but the UMX is not too bad....Only 25 keys, but full access to all octaves.

The best little bit of stuff I have is a Mackie ONYX satellite....Its got a few faders and knobs, but creates a great sound- if you can get yourself an older Mackie EQ, you will love it.

I remember with fondess using a huge analogue desk at my school, all valve amps; it was worth about $250,000 and sounded unreal. There was also a valve compressor that synergised really well with it....Even though we need to digitise our music, I used to always feed my tracks through one of the busses and through the compressor; not effecting the sound too much, but adding some kind of sheen otherwise missing.

Been learning how to vape (JWH) off foil today. You learn something new every day haha. Failing currently though, I've vaped like 20-25mg so far and it feels like I smoked like 6 or 7mg. I need to perfect the technique a bit :P

Yup, so true. If you take the spec for any mac, PC or laptop, and customise (or build your own) PC/laptop to the same/similar spec - with OS, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers etc too - you will always be able to find something cheaper than the Mac provided you know the right places to look.
