Paleo diet

bacon is not part of the paleo diet and butter is to be used sparingly in cooking

We grill, slow cook, and broil so I don't think I will have a need for clarified butter, lard, or meat drippings.

I think if the meat is from an animal that was raised naturally and it contains very few other ingredients – no added nitrates/nitrites, no corn or wheat products, and no unnatural preservatives – it’s Paleo.

I have link to a friend of a friend who is on the Paleo diet. He does cross fit too, and even keeps a blog. http://www.thepaleodrummer.com/
He's kind of a douchebag, but really into punk music. Thing about eating Paleo is it is EXPENSIVE. And this drummer guy is also an appellate court attorney and his wife is a graphic designer - no kids. They can spend the money buying an entire side of Grass Fed Beef and stuff. His biggest snack are Larabars - which run between a buck to 2 bucks a piece.

Yes, you must commit body, soul and checkbook to a lifestyle like this. It does him (and the wife) well. If you read the blog you'll find out they even fuck more often.

It must be nice to have that kind of money to be able to live like that.

(before you ask, my money goes to drugs and gas for the car! i live at home so i get three squares a day and since I'm on a diet they're primarily whole foods and vegetables..)

I bought my first paleo grocery order tonight and it was CHEAPER. This surprised me as I spend about 700-800/month for 2 people. It was also quicker to shop. Perimeter of the store only to buy what I needed. So happy wine is paleo :) I am not going to be a purist or a zealot on this "diet". No grains, no legumes, no dairy for me. I am not going crazy with being strict with it. My husband wants to keep brown rice and Clif bars in his diet....go for it, man. I like all vegetables and don't mind eating roasted or grilled chicken for breakfast. I started taking a calcium supplement this week.

Looking forward to hearing about your experience, Tab. :)

I know diet is a very personal thing, and what works for one person might not work for another - but I'd like to hear about how this experiment treats you. :)

so, last week my interest in this 'paleo' thing was piqued again (thnx, PI), as it's 9/10 in line with what i naturally/subconsciously go for anyways.
WELL, in reading on the subject, i found a diet that interested me a lot- the bulletproof diet (a modified paleo, you could say).

was surprised to have never heard of this, and wanted ot hear ppl's thoughts on it. seems..pretty ideal! [note that i'm not gonig to attempt any strict adherence to it, as that's truly "too expensive" regardless of how good you can shop, if you need my calorie req's]

I became interested in the paleo diet after a friend of mine lost a lot of weight on it. I eat a fairly high-protein, low-carb paleo-inspired diet and I cook most food myself. I usually avoid grains and starches except for the occasional cookie or tortilla. I eat a lot of salads so lettuce and other greens have somewhat replaced bread for me. As far as dairy goes, I have never been a milk drinker but I do like cheese and strained(greek) yogurt. Assuming it isn't sweetened after the fact, strained yogurt is mainly fat and protein so its not so bad. The only legumes I eat are black beans - no peanuts anymore. Overall, meats vegetables, and eggs make up the majority of my diet. My snacks consist of "nuts", fruits, or small portions of leftover meals.

I have been able to maintain this lifestyle change fairly easily. I am armed with a load of recipes. It requires more planning but after a few months we will have enough recipes under our belt and ingredient staples that it will be quicker to meal plan and cook.

I lost 5 lbs in 30 days. I feel pretty good and I think I see a slight body composition change. 6 months will be my true gauge.

I still eat Clif bars (because Kind and Larabars are pricey and I would rather spend it elsewhere) and fat free half n half for my coffee. I am like a crackhead with them at night for carbs when carrot or kale chips just don't cut it after puffing.

I poop more often and I was regular before. I assume it because I am eating more vegetables than usual. I am not a big fruit eater. Apples, bananas, pineapple, berries, and grapes are my norm. My husband's co-worker gave us a juicer they are no longer using. I have yet to look at the recipe book.

I don't diet ever and refuse to go extreme on anything. I just do moderation and eat what I want...well, and it probably helps that I don't cook so there is no overeating for me.

However, the healthiest I ever felt (and I'm trying to do) is when I ate a lot of fish, fruit and took my flaxseed oil and vitamins regularly. Funny thing, though, is I still did wine at night. Lucky for me a really like fish, but I really like a medium rare steak too.

I can't do low/no carbs, because I have to concentrate for work and that will do nothing but make me unable to focus. My biochem professor was anti-Atkins and explained that most sugar goes to the brain, and mah brain is all I got. :)

Oh I enjoy cooking. I don't diet either I just eat well most of the time. I still drink alcohol. Beer, wine, vodka, and maple whiskey. I'll get sugars there, right? I am interested in the fat burn with this way of eating and really dairy, legumes, and grains are non essential to my well being when my food intake has the right balance.

i don't even have much appetite for non-primal-type food anymore.. i've swapped almost all of my carbs to fats and imagine i've been in ketosis, and i don't get hungry. eating is great adn i'm putting down a TON, but i don't really crave anythign ever and went over 12hr morning fast the other day barely noticed it :] (i've been fasting the first 1/3 of the day maybe a bit later..) energy is through the roof, my times are steadily coming down (bike and running), sleeping soundly/routinely, still gaining weight slow/steadily. wish i'd tried this a long time ago..
