Old Erowid vs. new Erowid

People post drug experiences on Erowid that never happened. I don't know why, since it's not a forum where you have a stable username and can try to grow your e-penis; but they still do/did it.

^ How do you know? And what's the difference between a blue star and a yellow star experiece report?

^
cmon guy, spend a little time perusing some of the reports on erowid and it is patently obvious that some of them are complete and utter bullshit.

If I cared enough I would cite a few examples, unfortunately I do not.

As much as I like Erowid, the site really needs some serious work. Some vaults could use a lot more info; the layout just doesn't make sense: there's the icons at the top (basics, images, etc.), many of them blank for certain vaults, and under that you just have a big, long listing (albeit divided into categories). Here's an example of my qualms:

Take a look at the peyote vault. Cluttered in with their long list of pages on peyote, there's: What Is The Shelf Life of Peyote...it's under 'History'. The link is to an article from Erowid Extracts. They should integrate the information in that article into the site (drug basics, perhaps?) rather than just stick a link to it (which can be provided AS WELL).

I recall reading a mushrooms experience report where the guy claimed to have climbed a pyramid with Jim Morrison. I've yet to have a psychedelic experince so I can't really gauge how plausible that is.

Wayne had a similar thing in that movie, but in the desert, with a half-naked Indian guy.

Here's what Erowid has to say about the new design:

New 3.0 Front Page
http://www.erowid.org/

Perhaps the first thing friends of Erowid will notice is the new front page of the site. The old Alchemist Collage is gone and is replaced by a design we call Blocks (or the 3.0 splash page). There are a variety of fun things about the new Blocks design, including a more dynamic effect from visit to visit as well as a place to showcase some of the interesting photos in our collection, and direct links into subsections of the site [8(]. We have chosen to continue with a 'splash page' design, and will also be adding some interesting features to the page soon.

What were they thinking?

Why dontcha send fire a pm asking if the old alchemist collage is still up there somewhere? Then we could re-set our bookmarks to that.

You can reset which splash page you want to see by going here:

http://www.erowid.org/general/splash/preferences.php

It's an ugly page never quite cleaned up for the public, but if
you select the "v2.5 - 2001 - Alchemist Collage" from the dropdown
at the top and hit "set splash page", you'll get that splash
page from now on when visiting Erowid. There will also be
a link in the upper left corner of the splash page (again,
slightly ugly since we haven't ever gotten around to publicly
releasing this feature) that will let you get back to the
preferences page in the future if you want to reset back to
the "blocks" design.

If you have any problems with this feature, feel free to let
us know...but we probably won't get around to fixing it anytime
soon. Use at your own risk. :)

^Damn it, I clicked that link and changed to an older version, now it won't let me go back...

(1999 v1.1, btw)

Be careful with that link, people!!!

I've already replied to BollWeevil privately, but in case anyone else has a problem with their splash page getting stuck on an older version, all you need to do is clear your Erowid cookies. The preferences for what splash page to display are set in cookies, so clearing them will reset it back to the current blocks version.

We've never had any problems with it getting stuck...not sure what the issue was for BollWeevil.

nice to see you here fire, there are many that are big fans, in spite of our bitching about pettiness :)

thanks for everything you have done.

and a big thanks for the splash link, just did it and it works, awesome :D

I liked the immediate front page of the old errowid, but now it's just more practical and user-friendly.

Without erowid, i might not be here today. (bluelight, that is)
I loved that site, it was my first stop for information reguarding drugs, generally unbiased and told you what you needed to know. Since i read all the major details about virtually everydrug on that site, i now come here for the minor details. they usually get answered. :)

^ Then thank god you're not the webmaster, because some of us aren't in middle school anymore, and prefer the functional and professional new page to the Alchemist one.

How is the new page any more functional? They both have the SAME buttons. Let me emphasize that: THE ALCHEMIST COLLAGE HAS THE SAME EXACT BUTTONS!

Don't tell me you actually click the random images that pop up as your way of navigating the site 8( . That's not a functional feature - it's a *nifty* feature (at the expense of an awesome design - weigh that on a scale).

just because it has the same set of buttons doesn't mean it's not less useable.

i agree with rocklobster - i find the new page clearer and the links are not lost in the noise of the background image as much. for me, the new front page is definitely more functional (ease of use being an important function).

I'm sorry I just don't see how either of them can be easier to use. Also, the links were neatly arranged at the bottom of the page in the Alchemist Collage, and when you moved your mouse over them, all the subcategories popped up underneath - the new one lacks that, so the old one is actually more informative.

you said it :)

it's simply a personal preference. that's all. if you don't understand how somebody can simply have a different preference to you, that is a little worrisome. otherwise, as the hippies love to say, it's all good.
