Old Erowid vs. new Erowid

I get the same thing as I always did. The rest of you are probably just freaks.

Haha - no, the one I posted a screen capture of is the OLD one, guys. The "splash" page is the new one.

I think Erowid is an elitist site.
1. why?

2. what have you done - or are you doing - to help solve that problem?

aesthetically, i prefer the new look. that said, in matters such as these, i think the emphasis should definitely be on substance over style (pun intended :) )

I dunno, sometimes style has substance. Compare a bong to a modded coke can. The bong is obviously more stylish(not matter who made it, it's still a bong), and it works heaps better than your stab-victim macguyer deal. Just a thought.

^But the bong's design get's you higher, faster. Sure, the can-pipe works in a pinch, but it's ugly as hell. And it's not quite as effective. There IS a certain degree to where form AIDS function. :)

^ but in this case that isn't relevant. the new page is more functional than the old. who cares if it "Doesn't look as cool".

^I actually found I was visiting a good bit more of the website when it had the alchemsit-type opening. Now I sorta pop in once a month to see if I miss anything important. The old page, being the bong, I took in more from the website. The new page, being the ghettoed up coke can, feels more like a chore and I'm just doing it minimally. The content is just as good, but the presentation and delivery affected my usage.

It's information about things you are putting into your body that you may benefit or be harmed by. Who cares what it looks like aesthetically? It is a nexus of research and anecdotal evidence about psychoactive substances.

A drug forum gives a flying fuck about what it looks like? Really?

Edit: We should be setting an example, not looking at a website more or less because there is a bong on the frontpage. What the fuck guys?

You're absolutely right. I was just sharing my personal experience with Erowid.

GO TO EROWID, IT'S COOL! HOT CHICKS WILL SLEEP WITH YOU WHEN YOU GIVE THEM THE LOWDOWN ON 2-C-T-7!

Honestly, I would look at a website if there was a bong on the front page, and I don't even smoke weed.

I think the new erowid kicks ass. Its much more professional and way easier to navigate.

I don't even think its lost any of its 8th grader secret society charm... Some of the pics on the front page are shocking... like the DMT crystals or a cool looking flower. It's wierd science that gets you high- and while that may not attract the pimply kid with the metallica shirt, it is very appealing to the kid who is interested in science.

edit: and the kid who is interested in science is a better kid to get interested. He's got a chance to change something.

The old Erowid front page was probably THE most creative design for a web page I've ever seen. It really madde the site seem like buried traesure. It was just plain beautiful art, and I liked it better.

I really don't see how this new "splash page" is any more functional. The randomized drug pictures carry links, but a similar thing could've been done to the old one - they didn't have to do a complete hack job.

No one's forcing you to post in my thread.

it is called a discussion, just a comment, not a big deal, I think the bigger question is what is the big deal about someone having this conversation? this is drug culture, not drug basics :)

and for alisdair, i don't think lack of style insinuates there has also been a lack of substance, noone said they have downhill in that way. but yes, substance always over style in level of importance!

The only thing I ever disliked about Erowid, were some of the trip reports that I found out to be either fake or had a lot of discrepancies. It's a great informative site though and I still use it to this day.
