HELP!!

i have an external USB DVD writer. its a pioneer model of some sort, and its actually an internal model that has been put into this box/housing thing that makes it work externally. (i'll find the online details in a sec and post em, so you know what im on about)

anyway, yesterday it stopped working, (im running windows XP) and i started getting messages whenever i plug it in that say "USB device not recognised/maybe not working properly" - something to that effect.

BUT

it DOES work on my girlfriends computer (also win XP)

im no where near what i used to be with computers so i really dont know what im doing or what could be wrong.

please help!

Are you plugging this device into a USB Hub?

If so... I highly recommend plugging into a local USB port, as I had issues with my USB HDD.. It come up with all kinds of odd errors.

Does reinstalling the drivers for it have any effect? Those are usually on the cd that comes with the device.

i plugged my USB mouse into the same usb slot and it works there.

after trying to do some research i am thinking im going to have to take roshy's advice and re install the drivers... i found the cd that came with it but guess what?!?!?! my computer wont read cd's at the moment

i think it is something to do with ASPI maybe????????
if anyone has the file(s) i need???

if you've already installed the drivers you may not need the CD to reinstall them.

Simply go to Control Panel -> System, and click on the 'Device Manager' tab. There you should be able to find the drivers for your USB HDD. Clik on them and remove them.

Restart your computer. Plug in the HDD. *Hopefully* windows will auto-detect and run plugnplay to install the drivers. If this doesn't happen go to Control Panel -> Add New Hardware and get it to search for the device.

At this point it should hapefully have been detected and you should have an install drivers window. Normally this is where you'd need the CD.

Because the CD isn't available installation of the drivers will stall and a popup will appear. In one of the install windows it should say the name of the driver file it's looking for.

Goto Search -> Files or folders and search your computer for the file it needs. Cos the drivers have already been installed before, all the files you need will be somewhere, usually in C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. When search finds the file, you go back and type where it is into the popup, and hit enter. It will sucessfully install that file, and stall on the next one. Repeat the process for each file until there are no more.

I have done this dozens of times when i've lost my XP CD or my CDROM was broken and it does work. Good luck.

Finally remember that if you have a network connection you can put the CD in someone else's CD drive, share it and get the install files that way.

thank you so much to nezo, InSoMnIa^, roshy & potato
ive got cds and dvds again on this old hunk of crap!!!

:) :) :) :)

shorza - your tv thing sounds awesome. can you tell me what its called i wouldnt mind getting one

shorza.... how on earth... i thought they stopped ppl from being able to do that by encoding the signal differently or sumthing like that... what city u live in coz in melb i thought u couldnt do it anymore

First of all there's a few ways' you can do this...

I Use Windows Media Centre 2005 (MCE) with MCE Compliant TV Tuner Cards. I've now got two digital cards in my PC so I can record 3 shows' at once whilest watching a forth. The way it's all set up I can record it and it will auto cut out the ad's, plus once it's finished recording it will auto-burn to DVD. It's a kick ass system, and if anyone wants' more info on it let me know. It's not a "Special" type of computer, it's pretty much just a MAJOR enhancement ontop of Windows XP Professional so you can still run all your standard Applications and Games without causing any drama...

mine problem should be simple enough - basically i have managed to get my hands on a live set by kruder and dorfmeister via the net - the only problem is it's a 96 minute mp3 file - what i want to do is effectively 'break' this file in half so that i can burn the two halves onto two cds...
alternatively; can anyone tell me why my burning programs (i have itunes, nero startsmart and the wmp in-built burning program) won't recognise the fact that i have 700MB AND 4.7GB CDs that would otherwise easily hold this 128MB file i.e. all programs keep saying that the disc does not have enough space to fit the file?

any help would be great....

yea i thought it was my crap "dial Up"....

yes the file is like 20MB......

i'll try and download from my friends PC who has DSL..

then Burn and copy to my PC....

thanx :)

With the problem you stated, i doubt its the connection or your isp. I've found over the years that connections that drop half way through download (or recieving mail for that matter) its usually the modem that is at fault.

Can anyone recommend a good popup killer for me to use?

The one I had was still allowing popups, even after adding the sites to the blocked list.

I think you'd have better luck hunting down every person responsible for a pop-up and shooting them in the back of the skull. *

* This may result in incarceration, but more likely you will be worshipped as the messiah of the modern age.

kat, try browsing with opera, then setting it to 'block all popups'.
Note, it does block legitimate popups (ie. java popups etc.)

or firefox
even though opera uses a smaller memory footprint, and is generally quite cool (used it for 3 whole days, but im too much of an FF whore)

Hmmm... I might give it a go, but I was looking for something that gives you the option of allowing or blocking the pop up, without just automatically blocking all. The one I was using used to come up with its own window the first time you accessed a new site and asked whether you wanted to allow all/allow this time only/block all/block this time only, which was good for legitimate popups. But for some reason, it stopped working the longer I used it.
