Well, it hasn't been proven to be an impossibility, in fact, we know that something already travels at the speed of light... light!
Remember, they used to think that the earth was flat, and that the solar system rotated around the earth. These were proven scientific theories that were later debunked.

I would think that once you are near the centre, the gravity would be so strong all around you, that you would just explode.
