yeah it's strange, every now and then I get a pack that doesn't split too well. I was thinking that maybe they've been sitting around for a while so the two halves merged very slightly rather than being fresh and more 'seperate'(?). After testing the solubility of both I was happy to go ahead and still gulp down the N+ sides (codeine much more soluble then Ibuprofen) will no ill effect - quite the opposite of course! If you're really worried then it's worth doing a cold water extraction but I think we're pretty safe.

I do that sometimes. If I feel the halves haven't split very well, I'll do a CWE on the N+ sides just in case. It makes for a damn awful drink but better safe than sorry.

If the N+ side dissolved rapidly in the NaOH, wouldn't that mean it's the acid (ibuprofen in this case, as people have said)? Are you guys sure codeine is basic? It seems that experiment says the N+ sides = ibuprofen, but that can't be the case if people are doing these.

Is that all there is to do on the CWE? That's an easy process. Just do a ton at once. Crush, cup of hot water, put in cold water, pour through funnel while filtering.

It probably dissolves in the NaOH because Codeine is highly water soluble. Hence its dissolving, not reacting. IF you wanted to see if it was reacting you'd have to do a pH test on it and I'd imagine you'd find it wasn't neutralising.

The N+ is Codeine. That or I'm getting a good high of a shitload of Ibuprofen.
