A 14-year-old Sonoma County girl found dead after drinking alcohol during a sleepover party ingested a fatal dose of the "date rape" drug, but where she got it isn't known, authorities said Wednesday.
Takeimi Rao was found on the floor of her bedroom at her home on Foothill Ranch Road in an unincorporated area near Santa Rosa at about 9 a.m. July 10, authorities said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators found a partially empty bottle of vodka at the home and a plastic water bottle that the girls used to drink alcohol, said Assistant Sheriff Lorenzo Duenas.
Authorities initially theorized that Takeimi had died as a result of alcohol poisoning or had choked on her vomit. But toxicology results showed she had overdosed on GHB, said sheriff's Sgt. Greg Stashyn.
Gamma hydroxybutyrate, known on the street as "liquid ecstasy," is a potent drug used by some youths at raves, or all-night parties, for its euphoric effect. Larger doses can lead to unconsciousness and death, and assailants have used it in date-rape cases.
Authorities don't know how the girl got the drug, Duenas said.
Takeimi's mother had taken her daughter and three of her friends, all 14 years old, to a hamburger restaurant for dinner before the Friday night sleepover, Duenas said.
At about 2 a.m. the next day, the mother was awakened by two of the girls, who were vomiting, he said. She concluded the girls could be suffering from food poisoning, tended to them and put them back to bed, Duenas said.
