In the video it is hard to understand a lot of what the man is saying(thankfully they had subtitles for some of it), but I think I heard him say a bottle of codeine will run anywhere from $6-800 and he was drinking one a day. Surely I misunderstood him.

What confuses you about that? Codeine is very expensive, it's usually sold in quantities of 1/8 or 1/4 bottle of syrup and the price he said is the most common one for a full bottle, at least in H-Town.

NFL players are multimillionaires, 800 bucks a day is well within their budget.

Codeine is OTC in most countries but prescription only in the US. Canada and pretty much all of Latin America have OTC codeine. Most, if not all of Europe has either codeine or dihydrocodeine available OTC.

Yeah, pro athletes make absurd salaries, often in the millions or tens of millions. Michael Jordan's net worth is at 500 million, mostly from advertising. The team they play for generally will pay them a few million and then they can make a few more with ad revenue for sponsoring clothing lines or being in ads.

The part that confused me is that someone in this thread said they could go and buy this OTC, making it sound harmless.

Codeine is sold OTC or "behind-the-counter" in several states in the US, Canada, the UK, and many other countries. While it is not harmless, you can understand why people in countries with OTC codeine are shocked over this story.

Jolly's prison sentence is based on much more than just codeine possession, but it all stems from his addiction. Sending him to prison probably won't cure his addiction. He may graduate to more available prison drugs like heroin, and he will probably never get the intensive treatment he requires to conquer his addiction. Despite being illegal, codeine addiction is much more prevalent in the US when compared other countries. The US is not taking action (besides complete failures like DARE and others) to prevent pain killer addiction. It is not focusing enough on mandatory treatment programs with psychological professionals. It is just sad.

Many state-ordered programs for DUI and DWI have counselors in drug classes with no real professional training other than a 4-day course. This country really has not grasped the fact that proactive treatment would save its citizens and its money.

Are they really millionaires? Wow, I had no idea.
American football is BIG business. Tickets, TV advertising, merchandise. Even players on practice squads who may never see the field during a game never make less than $88,000. Peyton Manning's last contract earns him $90 million over 5 years.

Interesting point of view from a friend

Sorry If I'm off-topic but this really struck a chord

Alright, last night I stayed up late due to work reasons and ended up up lurking the forums every 45mins or so to keep focus on work, it works for me, shorter spans of lucidity than long sessions of stagnation and over absorbing information.

Well anyways I couldn't believe this shit! I'm currently planning to move to the states (or most likely Canadasince I already have family there and I think better job prospect, though my significant other lives in NY, and as of now I'm drifting, ), so this was really scary for me, cause as a kid I had the luck of experiencing what Latin America and Scandinavia are like, and both of their flaws, either being incarcerated for 'looking suspicious for using a Kindle to search for Ukulele Tablature and dare to play it on a public place whilst carrying Injectable meds (I'm a medical publishing agent and they were hefty doses of Vitamin B1 B6 & B12 with Lidocaine Solvent and some courtesy kits with gloves and needles that I had received from a colleague, since there's this 89 year old lady I take care of that needs them and cannot afford them), sadly they told me that due to a huge train wreck that night they were filling their quota, so bribery wasn't an option like it had been other times when I was caught actually breaking the law (even if I disagree with the drug laws and never was caught with anything else but Cannabis by the police, I suffered from Police Brutality in different South American countries, but so did in sweden and the States, with the huge difference I'd never dare to bribe a Swede Officer, and luckily in the states if you don't look 'ethnically unfit' and sometimes if you do but are doing nothing illegal they always went the 'oh you are a tourist, you won't be able to go to court, you'll have to pay a ridiculous fine if you wanna come back to The Land Of The Free' way, and well it was my mistake so I always payed, dunno where I'll end up, I really like NY, have time to plan with my s/o, BUT I'm on buprenorphine treatment, scripted 3 different benzos, lyrics, ambient, and a couple more psychotropics I'm forgetting , and I smoke weed.

I used to do all sorts of shit in all sorts of crazy ways, but I'm not that young anymore and have responsibilities and people to look out for (especially myself) so my old hazy days are long gone, but this scared the shit out of me, on my last trip to the states I did many drugs (from DXM I bought to probably not so legal or OTC ones I was given by friendly strangers), of course never in a public place, apart from the weed smoking at college dorms, but damn now I realize all the shit I was jeopardizing, I used to snort up to 10 OC40's a day and do very good Colombian H, but when cash was running short I always lowered and potenced my doses with benzos, antihistamines and codeine, it's not OTC, but it's not that hard to get a script. This is scary, well he wasn't dr. shopping, he was getting it from the streets, still even if he was discriminated for being African American (I feel I got discriminated by a black cop for not being even american) the guy was a millionaire, okay he was breaking probation, BIG mistake, but what about Snoop Dogg or Mike Tyson? I know in California it's different but snoop was Caught with a Firearm and Weed at LAX after 9/11 and the liquid explosive scare, had it been me I'd probably have been labelled a terrorist, and Mike Tyson, Raoing, Wrecking Cars on Cke? He gets millions to dance on TV and travel with his ' spiritual crew' around the world.......this is so unfair and scary in so many ways.

Actually I got so upset I called an american friend of mine who is working here and today he wrote me this reply, I told him the incident was at Houston several times, I read him the blueklight article, but the guy is ALWAYS stoned, still a really smart writer, but since the Player in question was from the Green Bay packers he assumed all along it was in WI.,

I apologize for the mistakes, misspellings and W and N words, the following is a very eloquent answer I got from a good friend:

I kept thinking about what you told me last night, that's just awful, that's what I mean by the U.S.A. now being a police state ("offenses" such as public drinking, whilst it's not 'offensive' if done at a private locale, their war on drugs of which they are the only coutry on earth that even considers such a concept...

Switzerland rounds up junkies in un-beautifying public spaces and just drops them in an ugly town to be left alone with medicinal heroin! Switzerland, the land of no violence, no nothing but (many Nazi) Gold! Rural laotian grandmothers smoke more opium a day than the equivalent of some "canadian tylenol/hydro" and there's no shame about that in the village at Laos.

It's fucking wisconsin. they are a proud little milky predominantly fat whitey beer drinking midwesterner cheesy state that wont be as corrupt as california or texas when it comes to putting their population of negroes behind bars where they so unconsciously most of their population obviously think they belong, 6 years.

So Rick Perry can bail out friends and strangers? So what a victimless "drug offense" ruins your life? On the Othe hand manslaughter (like Senator Kennedy did to that poor girl in Martha's Vineyard) or even homicide (like O.J. Simpson), gets you 4 year of catharsis, understanding, and maybe even more fame!

How many times must I remind you this my friend? Unlike killing someone which is perfectly natural, psycho active drugs are an affront to god and society and are punishable in the same exact way as speech was punished back then. Psycho active compound constitute heresy.
I'm not freudian but every society needs its totems and its taboos. Sometimes there's only one totem that also functions as a taboo as in the excellent short novel "Lord of the Flies" (Baalbuzeh').
back then it was what came out of the mouth, words.
Nowadays it's what comes into the mouth (or vein, or mucosa) and affects normal social behaviour in an unacceptable way.
Acceptability is determined by the social engineers that unconsciously do their work from the legislators in Washington and Brussels, to the propagandists in Hollywood, to the prosecutors in green bay / and lack of thereof in the vineyard.
It's nice and uplifting to hear you're adhering to some unspecified moral principles

Thought it was a pretty good answer even with the mistakes....

lol @ codeine. it was probably sizzurp, amiright?? sigh, i remember the days when i could get high off codeine :(

...i mean i could understand if it was dope or roxi, but codeine. damnn....

it doesnt cost money to jail people with private prisons. they get $X per person per day, plus slave labour for the entire sentence they can contract out to other companies. nobody wondering why they lobby for longer sentences for smaller amounts of drugs??? anyone who says the drug war cant be won is waaay off. it was won the moment it started... all the major players involved are doing just fine. cartels? rich. politicians? rich. big pharma? rich. DEA? budgeted annually for billions. only people losing are the users or low level dealers. The drug war is going exactly as planned. Mission accomplished decades ago. all this is just icing on the cake. u gotta start thinking about it from the other side.

^I think what you're referring to is what most call the drug war failing. You're right though, it depends on your perspective.

I think the bottom line is this... these laws, however ridiculous, have been in place for a long long time. If you can't take care to avoid getting screwed by them, either do something to change them, or move to Amsterdam!

Well, that's certainly a crusty and narrow-minded way to look at it.

Another way to look at it would be to realize that CHANGE IS GOOD. Without it, humanity doesn't advance.

I was merely pointing out that people spend more time complaining about how bad things are than doing anything to change them. There were actually a couple of different remedies to that particular problem in my post. How is that narrow minded?

And before you get all philosophical on me, you might want to look into whatever it is in your head that made you interpret what I said as me thinking CHANGE IS BAD. Or maybe you should read posts thoroughly before you respond to them.
