Drug equipment to be banned in SA
October 17, 2007 - 1:35PM
Bongs, smoking pipes, cocaine kits and other drug paraphernalia will be banned from sale under new laws introduced to the South Australian parliament.
Independent upper house MP Ann Bressington will introduce the measures which are expected to pass with the support of the Labor government.
They outlaw the sale of any drug paraphernalia and remove the requirement for police to prove the equipment is being used for the consumption of illegal drugs.
Current laws make the possession of bongs and other equipment illegal only after they have been used.
Ms Bressington said her bill meant police would no longer be hindered by the legislative glitch.
"It closes many loopholes that have enabled pipes, bongs, cocaine kits, ice pipes and other forms of drug-taking paraphernalia to be freely sold on our streets and markets," she said.
"This bill leaves no stone unturned and no legislative ambiguities behind which traders can hide."
