whats the bet that things like selling nurofen + to someone will likely not be a real issue for a pharmacist... They know far and wide codeine is abuseable. they also know it is useful. How many of them are wankers enough to take your details for it? probably about as many as woiuld question and take ur id to buy some phenergan... i've come across 1

I had a pharmacist put the phenergan inside a sealed box that can only be opened at the front counter once... wtf does she think I'm going to do, run off with an antihistamine? Jesus, I don't look that sketchy.

Obviously the Heroin drug lords were becoming unhappy with the incredibly cheap and easy access of codeine availability and thus lobbied for a restriction. I say kudos, if it brings back the heroin and crime back into our cities then problem solved.

on serious note my gut, literally believes this was all the fault of the split-able Nurofens. See i know many a smackie, and opiate fiend and far too many of them don't have access to the internet, nor know of bluelight.

Accordingly these fiends when desperate would eat a box of nurofen not realising the awful damage they were doing to their stomach ulcer. See many of them were missing the crucial fact that the pills were split-able, or that you could cold water extract em. Now you might all go but chugs there was always panadeine, or for that matter any other brand of paracetamol plus codeine painkiller.

Yep there was but many of these fiends got caught up in the brand, and marketing. They weren't exactly all aware of how easy it was to find opiates at a very cheap price sitting on a shelf. They were sucked into the machine. Now of course a few Chinese whispers later and out fiends were hearing stories about how great nurofen plus was. perhaps peddled out of bluelight and managled beyond recognition to the street level?

thus we had a wave of off the shelf painkiller abuse that coincided with the heroin drought. Eitherway, you can still get the tablets and rikodeine anytime you want. just the 48s are out of service.

In QLD the law has been your details had to be taken for larger box's (48+) and they are very vigilant about it. Having the laws in place seem to add a stigma to the pills where they will ask several questions, ask to see ID and even when they spot a pattern, come over and tell you that codeine is addictive and tell you that your useing it too often and see a doc. I think the law states they have to record your details on the box so some just write it on with pen and often they take your name and address at your word but most chemist will record into a computer.

I travel over into the NSW boarder and buy a large pack and no one cares.

These laws have in ways been in effect in QLD for sometime now and I still have no problems feeding my addiction, the only difference now is that I will only be able to get a small box from each chemist and move to the next. I often do this anyway plus iv created employment oppertunities for my friends buy if we are walking past a chemist il get them to go in and get us a pack and il get them lunch. Not often do I do this buy I like to keep a very low profile from my local chemists so if im every fiending badly I dont have far to travel.

I do need to quit but its so hard when it doesn't really have any noticable negitive effects on my life. I can afford it and I enjoy it. It's really hard gathering the will not to dose when you can only see positives. Im going to try yet again though.

Really I don't see these laws as being effective, I wouldn't be suprised if people don't start robbing chemists for Codeine (one has already been robbed here in QLD but they got the guy). I can think of measures that would make the drug far less abusable yet would make no difference for people useing it for its correct use.

That's my little rant anyway

I don't get what anyone means "heroin drought".. sure it's not 1999 but theres definately no shortage of heroin, the asian cartels have no trouble bringing it into our country in mass quantity.

Watching border security last night, they made customs mail sorting look like a fools errand, whilst making extreme claims that sydney, being 75% of our mail volume, finds ALL drugs consealed within air consignments.

Static; wow.. you guys being codeine fiends really makes me wonder, what the hell do you get out of it after such a long period of use/abuse? codeine was virtually ineffective to me after 6+ months of use, only semi regularly. Why the hell would anyone rob a chemist for codeine? they have like 900 other drugs sitting on the shelf of higher abuse potential, i walk to the counter at my local chemist and play spot the benzo/opiate... So far i've managed to find all of the following, and their locations; Diazepam, Clonazepam, Alprazolam, Oxazepam, Tramadol, Codeine - obviously nothing S8 as it's required by law to be locked in a safe. Well except the methadone and buprenorphine, which they keep on the counter, within arms reach of junkies.

Accordingly these fiends when desperate would eat a box of nurofen not realising the awful damage they were doing to their stomach ulcer. See many of them were missing the crucial fact that the pills were split-able, or that you could cold water extract em.

Yep...hoardes of them... and also the mass appeal made to the typical cheapskate looking to get high...

sigh.

what a pain in the fuckin' neck. :|

Up here in QLD I've definitely noticed a giant drop in the availability of heroin. Which is making most of my friends go the codeine path just for something.. We've had two chemists robbed in the last week around my location, the chick worker said that mainly codeine was taken..

As static_mind said, up here in QLD you've had to give name and address if you want a bigger pack, so that's nothing new but I've noticed that since this was mentioned, the pharmacists look at us differently, lol. Perhaps that's just paranoia :P

Mav :)

Sure, but it's also well known your average smack fiend won't feel a damn thing from an oral dose of codeine... and alot of them aren't very smart... codeine can be lethal if injected.

I say this as a heroin user, who see's other users - and can't put himself in the same bracket and attest to their idiocy.

I had documented records of arthritis and various other heavy pain ailments, and even after seeing a doctor in Broadbeach (OZ, Gold Coast) and walking down with a prescription for some BS NSAID with a note to add neurofen plus, FROM THE DOCTOR UPSTAIRS they still grilled me for 20 min, insisting on giving me regular neurofen. it was insane. when some kid i went to school with there went to the same doc the week before and for 90 xanax!?

^ yeah i noticed QLD chemists are rather strict. I went into one, full suited up (was travelling in Brisbane) and had to complete a form, provide my licence, all to get some Panadeine extra strong tablets. We even had a discussion about people who abuse the tablets.

nb. i was in a lot of pain at the time.
nbb. for some reason whenever i'm suited up no one thinks i've ever even had a beer let alone thought of abusing a behind the counter drug but brisbane chemists have some sort of superhuman druggie detection skill.

So now customers are required to record details at a chemist to get N+ etc. Pretty crazy.

I thought the pharm companies would introduce an altered product, like this one from the UK (32 tabs).

Well i just went in and grabbed a 48 pack of chemists own today... They all had labels all over them. The lady was very helpful although she did try to tell me that a packet of paracetomol was actually a codeine pack...fail. Had to grab another box and say i might just take these ones lol.

But labels everywhere...

The chemists own big 100 packs are the way to go. Im hoping they arent dissapearing as well..bought 2 the other day. They are great..wish i discovered them ages ago!

Of course they are disappearing too.

I dont have a problem with smaller packages. I dont see the point of requiring the details of customers who buy codeine products. As is mentioned elsewhere the strain it will place on doctors giving prescriptions and chems having to record customer details will be huge.

The National Drugs and Poisons Schedule Committee (NDPSC), at its June 2009 meeting made the following resolution:

RESOLUTION 2009/56-8
The Committee decided:

* that the current scheduling of codeine combinations for coughs and colds remained appropriate
* that OTC combination analgesics containing codeine (CACC) be removed from Schedule 2
* to limit the duration of treatment for OTC CACC to no more than 5 days
* to limit the maximum unit dose of codeine in OTC CACC to no more than 12 mg
* to limit undivided OTC CACC preparations to no more than 5 days supply at a maximum daily dose of 100 mg and at a concentration of no more than 0.25 per cent
* to limit the maximum daily dose of codeine in OTC CACC to no more than 100 mg
* not to include codeine in OTC CACC in Appendix H, and
* to defer implementation of this resolution until 1 May 2010.

Information on the background and reasons for this resolution appear on the TGA website at: NDPSC record of reasons, 56th meeting 16-17 June 2009 <http://www.tga.gov.au/ndpsc/record/rr200906.htm>.

In October 2009, the NDPSC varied this resolution to the following:

RESOLUTION 2009/57-14 (variation to Resolution 2009/56-8)
The Committee confirmed the June 2009 resolution (2009/56-8) regarding a Schedule 3 entry for all OTC combination analgesics containing codeine. However, the Committee agreed to vary the June 2009 resolution (2009/56-8) regarding the Schedule 2 entry for codeine combinations for coughs and colds by increasing the pack size limit to not more than 6 days (rather than 5) of supply as the maximum dose recommended on the label.

Schedule 2 – Amendment
CODEINE – Amend entry to read:
CODEINE in preparations for the treatment of coughs and colds when:

1. not combined with any other opiate substance
2. compounded with one or more other therapeutically active substances, of which at least one is phenylephrine and not more than one is an analgesic substance
1. in divided preparations containing 10 mg or less of codeine per dosage unit, or
2. in undivided preparations containing 0.25 per cent or less of codeine
3. labeled with a recommended daily dose not exceeding 60mg of codeine, and
4. in packs containing not more than 6 days of supply at the maximum dose recommended on the label.

Information on the background and reasons for the revised resolution appear on the TGA website at: NDPSC record of reasons, 57th meeting, 20-21 October 2009 <http://www.tga.gov.au/ndpsc/record/rr200910.htm>

These two resolutions have the effect of removing all Over-The-Counter (OTC) combination analgesics containing codeine (CACC) (other than phenylephrine-containing combinations for the treatment of coughs and colds) from Schedule 2 of the Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Drugs and Poisons (SUSDP), from 1 May 2010.

Based on these resolutions:

* those CACC products (with the stated maximum units and daily dosage) in packs containing up to 5 days' supply (and which are not Schedule 2 ('S2') medicines) will be transferred to Schedule 3 ('S3' - Pharmacist Only) of the SUSDP, and
* all packs containing more than 5 days' supply (and that are not S2 medicines) will be reclassified as Schedule 4 ('S4' - Prescription Only) medicines.

It is a regulatory requirement that all medicines included in Schedules 3 and 4 of the SUSDP have product information (PI) and consumer medicine information (CMI) documents. Given the timeframe for implementation of the changes and the numbers of products affected, the TGA has made the following arrangements, in consultation with the Australian Self-Medication Industry (ASMI) (including developing core PI and CMI – see below), to assist sponsors in making required changes for their products. The TGA has also written to all sponsors of OTC CACC medicines explaining these arrangements.

I like this one:
Schedule 2 – Amendment
CODEINE – Amend entry to read:
CODEINE in preparations for the treatment of coughs and colds when:
2. in undivided preparations containing 0.25 per cent or less of codeine

It is common for pharma companies to use inert clay as a filler for these products so they can import drugs of greater strengths into countries that have concentration laws such as that quoted in point 2 above.

This works because of the fact that they can have a jar of say 1L. They fill 0.9L up with inert clay, and the remaining 100m can be concentrated drug.

Anyone care to make a codeine product for the Australian market that uses this method to get some strong codeine prep onto the shelves?

and so it should...Codeine is a powerful drug, yet people undermine it's potential toxicology element to it by delusional thinking to themselves that they'll be safe because of it's OTC properties.

It will also prevent potential drug overdoses by people/also reduce the risk of acute live and/or renal failure/it will be a solution the the already burdening health system crisis that we have in this country.

But fuck it, I say fuck you to the Government. People can do whatever the fuck they want to do with their bodies, I don't give a fuck.

Codeine is not that powerful a drug. It's danger lies in the fact that it's combined with toxic ingredients (acetaminophen, ibuprofen) and most people don't realize exactly how dangerous these additives are.

I've read stories about people suffering stomach ulcers from taking too much Nurofen everyday... the danger doesn't lie in the codeine. People are going to find another way to get the 'fix' they want, whether it's more or less dangerous.
