How much? ... Australian drug users compare prices in online discussions

AUSTRALIAN drug takers are using online social networks to compare prices for heroin, ice, cocaine, ecstasy and marijuana, letting them “shop around” as if they were buying legal consumer goods.

The secretive online forums are run according to strict guidelines and come with a warning to users not to incriminate themselves by admitting to possessing or selling drugs.

The discussions provide an underground snapshot of the local drugs markets - and how they compare to those overseas – with recent threads revealing:

- AUSTRALIA is one of the most expensive markets for illegal drugs in the world
- BRISBANE is the most expensive city in the country for speed, ice, cocaine and LSD
- ADELAIDE users pay less than those in other capital cities for cannabis, cocaine and ice
- SYDNEY appears to be the cheapest market for ecstasy and speed.

As well as forensic discussions of pricing, one thread offers a critique of the pills produced by Underbelly’s Carl Williams and another Melbourne identity and recalls private anecdotes from the times.

“They made the S**TTEST pills in Melbourne,” one user said. “The pills Carl made were (methamphetamine) and ketamine. (The associate’s) were often pink or red foxes, Carl’s varied.”

These self-described “harm minimisation” forums have been discussing price variations with their international counterparts for several years.

How it works

The rules at the start of the price thread state:

“1) PRICES ONLY - No comments about how "you're paying too much for that" or "damn, where you get that hookup?”

“2) NO D**K-SIZING- You might have a really good hookup, or you might not, so post about how you get ecstasy pills for $2 each - you're not impressing anyone, and NO ONE will even reply to you - why? See rule #1

“3) BE REALISTIC - don't post "I get 75,000 pills for about $3 each" - the price may be right but no one who is doing that kind of volume needs to inquire about prices here.

“4) DO NOT INCRIMINATE YOURSELF OF ANY ILLEGAL ACTIVITY -remember, this is what you would pay for drugs. DO NOT ADMIT TO POSSESSING OR SELLING.

“5) USE ACCURATE LANGUAGE - Post in terms we ALL KNOW - it's not a "jar" or a "sack" or a "quarter" or a "lick" or a "wrap" - if you use such terms, then GIVE THE AMOUNT WITHIN.”

What you pay

In the first weeks of 2009, users from Australia, America, Britain, Canada, Finland, Germany and Argentina have already started updating drug prices from previous years.

The first local on this year’s price thread – a user identified only as “drug mentor” – has posted: “Yeah, first Aussie to get in on 2009 :P! I'm in Melbourne Australia.

“Weed ($)15-20=Gram, 40-50=3 Gram, 70-90=Quarter, 130-150=Half bag, 200-250=Bag.
“Speed 50=2.5 Points, 100=Half gram, 180-200=Gram, 500-550 8Ball.

“Ice 100=2.5 Points, 200=Half gram, 400= Gram.
“Heroin 50="Street cap" I assume around a point, not sure though.
“Ecstasy 20-25 a pill, 100-120=5 pills, 160-180=10 pills, 900-1000=100 pills.
“GHB 3.50-5 a mil.

“I know prices for other s**t but that’s all I have been quoted on in 2009, I post more detailed prices in 2008 thread and for the most part they haven't changed.”

High prices

A Belgian user said he was shocked to see how relatively costly buying illegal drugs in Australia was.

“Wow… those Aus prices keep shocking me,” the man posted.

“Does it really cost that much to import those drugs across the water, or are there only a few big players that dominate the market and set the prices? Maybe because of harsh penalties?”

A drug user in Melbourne responded that Australia’s border security is much tighter than other countries: “I'd say it has something to do with us being an island and having extremely tight customs and border control.

“I've heard we have some of the most tightest in the world, so obviously the distributors on the higher end of the chain, or the people that are responsible for 'transporting' the drugs to over here, are going to charge a pretty hefty surcharge for the hassle.

“Also, the fact that our country isn't anywhere near as heavily populated as United Kingdom, or The United States means that the demand isn't as great, therefore not being as much bulk as say, what there would be in America, etc...”

The Australian forum member went on to detail the prices for illegal drugs in their suburb.

Breakdown

Nationally, users report increases in the price of a 3.5g bag of cannabis in recent years, while the amount paid for a “point” – or 0.1g – of ice has fallen.

The cost of ecstasy pills in Adelaide and Melbourne fell by $5 in the first half of 2008, while prices increased slightly in Sydney and stayed stagnant in Brisbane.

But not all prices in every capital city have been updated on a constant basis.

In Perth, users have reported paying a similar amount for cannabis in 2008 that buyers in other cities have. But only limited information on other drugs has been uploaded by West Australians in recent years.

Despite the unusual subject matter the forums seem to have the same logistical concerns as other moderators of user comments:

“This is ‘the format’. I encourage you to follow this and you may add comments as long as they are relevant.

“Don't tell us how much you pay for seven pounds of raw Asian Heroin, keep it on the average level for this board.”

Underbelly's Carl Williams 'made ecstasy to honour hitman Andrew Veniamin'
By Mark Schliebs

COLD-blooded murderer Carl Williams dominated the Melbourne drug market with some of the worst pills in town, according to his consumers.

But touched by the death of a hitman, Williams showed he could also be a chemical artist -fashioning a special high-quality memorial batch of ecstasy.

The details are part of a candid online discussion on an underground drugs forum, branded as a “harm-minimisation” arena.

“They made the S**TTEST pills in Melbourne,” one member said of the drugs produced by Williams and another Melbourne identity.

“The pills Carl made were (methamphetamine) and ketamine. (The associate’s) were often pink or red foxes, Carl’s varied.”

Another member agreed that ketamine – a horse tranquiliser – was the key ingredient in a lot of Williams’ pills.

“I know Carl made UFOs and some other press that doesn’t come to mind, but Carl’s pills were full of K like someone else has said, though it was all about quantity not quality.”

But after hitman Andrew Veniamin was shot dead by Dominic “Mick” Gatto in 2004, a special batch of pills, stamped with an “A” or a “V” became some of the best to have ever hit the streets, users said.

Veniamin was a friend of Williams, linked to a string of underworld killings, and a court later acquitted Mr Gatto of murder, ruling he acted in self-defence.

One ecstasy user said he did not know much about Williams’ other pills, but the ones he had in 2004 were beyond measure.

“I know that the notorious (beige) A's & V's which were circulating Melbourne around 2004 were apparently a tribute pill to Andrew Vienaman (sp?) and they were one of the best pills I’ve ever had,” the user said in a thread dedicated to discussing the convicted murderer and drug baron’s products.

Another said it would be great if those pills were back on the streets. “Oh I remember those beige A's they were f**king awesome I loved them along with a lot of other people would of I'm guessing...” the user said.

“If only there was a few hundred thousand in storage somewhere and they did the rounds again... Oh that would be heaven hahaha.”

Aside from the quality, there was also the concern of style with one user noting Williams’ use of the Fila, Fubu and Puma logos on some of his tablets: “Carl likes his sportswear even though he’s a fat prick.”

Perhaps Mark Schliebs should stop trolling forums and do some REAL JOURNALISM? Kind of glad he included the quote about Carl liking sportware despite his physical limitations though ;)

Edit: Shitty arse-licking crusty old worm-infested whore.... just in case a journo wants to quote me =D

news.com.au must be running out of decent story's again, hey wait theirs some pensioners complaining again. GET ON IT. This site is so undergound i had to take half a blue pill and half a red pill to be able to see it.

I bet a lot more LEO will start to watch this site from now on after this has been released, it's a sad day... Can't they tell that they are never going to win and to just make it legal so that the government controls the flow of drugs and that way makes money from it rather then spending money on stopping it...

I love it they included one of the things I said in the 'Carl Williams' things lol.

Slow news day? How many journalists are just trawling these forums looking for a story? Read about it first on Bluelight, then read it again on News.com.au. Suppose it would be a good way to be working and checking out whether the pills they just picked up are any good at the same time :P

Can't believe some of these people though. On one hand they are condemning that users are comparing prices and listing what they can get. But at least on BL it is much smaller readership then News.com.au (I think :P) and you have to go looking for it. By posting all the info from the price thread they are letting a much wider audience see it who may have before known nothing of it. From the point of BL I guess it's a good thing, letting more people know about HM sites like this, but it seems to be the opposite of what their agenda should be. But maybe this person likes what BL does and this is the only way they can spread the message of HM without getting in trouble.

Edit: Haha, just remembered I had a dream last night that BL was shutdown....twas pretty devostating :P

Hah! This is hilarious. What kind of journalism is this? Fifteen minutes looking at bluelight, and two newspaper articles out of it? Efficient if nothing else. I mean, given that the information on this board about which pills Carl Williams pressed is about as reliable as talking to a drunk random at a bar, I doubt these articles are going to glow with journalistic credibility.

Brilliant stuff. They bag the hell out of this site for comparing prices, and then print them all for the entire population to see? Wow, that's responsibly journalism for you. 8)8)8)8)

A quick note to the lads from News Ltd, if you're going to get all hysterical, how about you borrow some brains from somewhere, and just say we're comparing prices and get all outraged over that, rather than do exactly what Bluelight's done, but a hell of a lot worse.

Morons, I'm surprised they managed to spell Bluelight right so they could even find this site.

Google any of that article and the thread almost immediately comes up. We should accrue a few more users in the next couple of days.

lol fuck the police, the feds, customs and the media!
ahahahah.
some great quotes
drug mentor u be spewing ya nickname up there!
best to make ya quote unreadable use words like fuck cunt so they don't quote u thats best.
some famous quotes now. lol
Carls going to have hitmen in cyberspace now. some of this article is so misquoted: quoting stuff from other forum rules to quotes from another forum we don't allow prices here!

haha, this gave me many hearty lolz!

if i ever need accurate information, it's straight to news.com.au

Big shout out to the Herald Sun, which is Australia's number one newspaper, according to the Victoria Police Association who said this during a march in a fucking bullshit sweetheart deal last year after the Herald Sun did their stupid little 'Police member only' survey... what was the response rate on that guys, like, one in 3?

And what did everyone say? They wanted to quit and they wanted more pay? What a fucking surprise. Talk about obvious shit.

Find some real news you gutter journalism shit cunts!

It's funny how they dont mention how much Bluelight helps people. I cant even imagine how many lives have been saved because of this community. I really hated this line of the article.

" These self-described “harm minimisation” forums have been discussing price variations with their international counterparts for several years. "

They make it sound like people are only using this site for price discussion. Why cant they write and article about The Darkside and how it helps countless people work through problems in their lives everyday. I guess Im asking to much when I expect the news to tell the truth 8)
