it seems now the media is moving its attention from meth and focussing on the 'evil' cocaine popularity in australia

Cocaine drug lords hit Australia

Exclusive by Charles Miranda From: The Daily Telegraph December 14, 2009

A "GENERATIONAL shift" has pushed demand for cocaine to unprecedented levels, giving Australia the dubious honour of being the world's most lucrative market for the illicit drug.

International drug cartels are specifically targeting Australia, where a kilo of the drug now fetches $190,000.

An internal report by the Australian Federal Police has warned that international drug cartels are now specifically targeting Australia for cocaine shipments.

Seizures of the drug have grown by 20 per cent since 2003.

In the US a kilo of cocaine is worth $30,000 to $35,000.

The high Australian street value has sparked increased interest from overseas crime syndicates, a confidential internal report by the Australian Federal Police has warned.

"Across the board in all types of drugs, not just cocaine, the price paid per kilo in Australia is considerably higher than the price paid per kilogram anywhere else in the world," the report said.

Between 2003 and 2006/7, cocaine accounted for 4-5 per cent of drugs seized in Australia, 2007/08 rose to 10 per cent, 2008/09 25 per cent and so far in 2009/10, 10 per cent.

The report, handed to AFP chiefs just a week ago to be used to "evaluate the threat" and allocate resources accordingly, came as authorities in Colombia smashed a major international cartel in the process of several significant shipments to Australia.

Intelligence from that operation also found Australia was being used to launder significant amounts of money to fund global drug distribution enterprises elsewhere, including Europe.

According to the AFP's threat assessment report, the renewed popularity of cocaine came with Australia having experienced "a generational shift" away from opiate drugs such as heroin.

It concluded that while amphetamines such as ice were still popular with young users, well publicised associated risks and harms had put them off use.

The perception of risks associated with cocaine, however, were seen as lower and thus had made the drug more popular. Once the drug of choice for the rich in the 1980s, cocaine is now being abused by teens of average wealth.

Hopefully more people start importing it then so the price goes down, if we're really lucky we might actually get some decent quality shit.

I havent had decent shit in ages... Waaaay overpriced, but wtf else do I do? Try and grow some sassafras plants and make me some MDMA instead? le sigh.
Gotta take what i can get, and atm my coke is shite :(

Their is already decent quality stuff on the streets now... You just need to know the right people and be able to pay the right price...! You can get coke in whatever purity you like pretty much but you just need to have deep pockets or be apart of that scene/game and roll with the right crew/people.

^^ This. But just because I can afford to do it, doesnt mean I actually want to spend that much on it... For the price of 17 awesome quality pingers in the day, i now get half a nights worth of coke... yeh, fun times.

Obviously your getting shit coke then, I know a gram of good quality coke can last me a whole night and I'm not in anyway new to the scene... But this will probably end in dick sizing/sourcing and get us in trouble so lets just leave it their shall we....

Nobody is saying high quality coke doesn't exist, but it definately isn't the norm in this country

High quality coke is def around but a bit harder to find. Dont mean any dicksizing at all but that price there for a kilo? I mean where do they get such stupid information. Maybe i am just lucky for gettin singles for that price? Id doubt it tho. Its ridiculiously over priced in EU compared to other drugs but i dont understand it as it has to travel thru so many hands n countries before it arrives so why would it be less?

Which makes it seem all the more ridiculous - I can't imagine too many people would be paying the suggesting $190 per gram of this article.

Exactly... I woulda thought ~$250k per kg... ANyway, yes i get shit coke... but my mates reckon it's the bomb, and love it... so what can i do? I cant go to level 1 suppliers, i gotta take what i can when i can... and atm i can afford it, but i dont like it. I know i'm getting cut down shit... anyway, for me, i prefer pure MDMA, just cant get that shit anymore. So I do coke at exhorbatent prices. Yay. :S

I don't see the logic or relevance of this article. Coke has always been around (usually poor quality and very expensive). There has been no generational shift, Aussies love their party drugs. Coke has been here for decades.

Ecstasy (MDMA), meth, heroin are all much more expensive in Australia compared to most other countries too, so why wouldn't drug cartels be doing everything they can to import these drugs aswell? The fact is they are, so why the focus on cocaine? I don't get it. Whatever sells the papers I guess.

if you can afford it then you cant afford not to do an acetone wash;)

More generic sensationalist BS.

exactly what i was thinking:\

Why the hell do we pay more for drugs than any other countries? Back home where i lived we always winged about how much the price is, it just kept on falling down. Are people in Australia that desperate? To me it seems so as ive seen people paying 2-3 times as much for ice at the moment and also with other drugs too. Why? The risk of importation has nothing to do with it. There are tons and tons of speed and MDMA labs in AU. Ill never understand it. My point is that it seems like some people living here are so naive and it makes me angry in a way why we are paying such high prices.

Tighter restrictions for MDMA precursors etc.? Anyways me sitting here arguing about the same sensationalist bullshit the papers put out is nothing new and neither is the garbage in the paper.

being naive has nothing to do about it. It's market forces that is driving the price. When you consider Australia's small population, geographical challenges, tough drug laws, somewhat inelastic demand etc - it's shouldn't come as a surprise really.

interesting read

more if ya bored
