Prime Minister John Key is proposing to combat the drug P by banning its main ingredient, pseudoephedrine, from use in over-the-counter cold and flu tablets.

...

Gangs and drug syndicates often use "pill shoppers" to go from one pharmacy to the next, buying the pseudoephedrine-based tablets and turning them into P.

Mr Key said he understood pseudoephedrine was banned in some American states, and he wanted to know if that would work here.

He said New Zealanders wanted the Government to "show some leadership" on dealing with P.

High purity methamphetamine (known locally as "P" for "Pure") has been an epidemic in New Zealand over the past decade. But I don't believe banning pseudoephedrine completely is the answer to stopping it, as a lot of precursors are still imported from overseas.

Wow im going to vote for this guy. I love his ideals, that photo with his kids, i know he has the children high in his mind. Just say No!!

Won't do shit, people will always find a way. Sounds like meth is pretty popular in NZ, and if the demand is there then something will always pop up to fill it.

^ Exactly. Meth is the second most popular illegal drug in NZ, next to weed.

Meth cooks will always find a way to get pseudoephedrine.

wow p i didnt know it was the 2nd most popular drug.
DAMN.
it must not have any social stigma then?

^ Oh yeah, it has heaps of social stigma. Lots of violent crimes over here have involved meth (the most famous case being Antonie Dixon). But that doesn't seem to stop people using it. :\

pseudoephedrine unblocks like no other. it would be unfair and inhumane to ban the most effective decongestant in the global civilian market!

Sounds like the guy was a complete nutcase before he ever touched meth :/

I don't deny that heavy meth abuse can bring out the worst in some people (aggression, paranoia, desperation, etc), but to commit violence of that magnitude requires a special kind of crazy that comes from more than just drugs.

Can't send you a PM bcs I am a greenlighter so have just popped this on here in the hope that you get it. send me a hotmail address or something if you want. It's been six months now and i am starting to get my health back at last. I'm convinced that P ages you much more quickly than you normally would. You don't notice in young ppl but in middleaged ppl like myself (i'm 50, though I find it hard to believe!) you get all the symptoms of aging. Must be all that adrenaline...:) Even the deep wrinkles that were developing around my mouth have disapeared and my skin tone has come back. Sometimes I miss those quick bursts of energy but when I think about it, those pretty much stopped after the first few years. In the last couple of years it was more about needing a puff just to get my arse out of bed!! I had quite high-stress job with long hours and had to give up work before I could come off P. Now, after six months, I am finally feeling normal again (whatever that may be :) ) and plan to start looking for freelance/part time work again soon. P is harder to come off than most ppl think, that's for sure. I wish that while I was withdrawing I'd had a bit more of the knowledge i have now. For instance, it's amazing how much a few Valiums can help those twitchy leg muscles. And you just have to give up trying to concentrate on things and watch the same movies over and over if that's what you need to do. Those yuk symptoms are all over now, thank god. But it's an amazing feeling to be free - especially to be free of some of the crappy ppl you end up dealing with!! If you're ever planning to give giving up another go and there's anything I can help you with, even if it's just moral support, then feel free to let me know.
all the best

just a general Q to all the kiwis.. Can anyone tell me what the pink granule substance is thats always in the NZ customs show and is used in P.its contact mp or np or something similar to that. With all the imports the ban on pseudo wouldnt have much effect on supply.

The US has banned pseudoephedrine - they have a massive meth problem.
The UK has not banned pseudoephedrine - meth is basically unheard of here.

Hmmm...

Pseudoephedrine isnt otc in the uk anymore, on prescription only.

Honestly with a lot of 4MMC users craving something stronger than what is being offered now plus alot of the social problems now like unemployment and such I am waiting for methamphetamine to start becoming more popular on the UKs streets. Especially once people realise how much more bang for buck methamp has when compared to coke or regular speed.

The U.S. hasn't banned psuedoephedrine. They just keep it behind the pharmacy counter and limit the amount a single individual can buy per month through a tracking system. The ban has been pretty effective at reducing domestic meth labs and the fires, explosions (not counting those small explosions from people mixing up meth with those instant freeze compress ingredients!), and crime that sometimes surrounds them even though usage may not have been that impacted (I don't honestly know the figures on this). It's true that wherever there's demand supply will find its way in ... to a degree. In New Zealand, I don't know, though. The place has more sheep than people. Yeah, some will find its way in from SE Asia or Australia, sure. But it's hard to believe banning psuedoephedrine won't have a substantial impact on both price and accessibility there. Prohibition is insane, but insanity works, at least a little bit, in special cases.

I think I read somewhere (nz herald probably) and may have posted it either here or in the aus/nz drug busts page in ausDD that NZ has seen a considerable drop in the amount of P being used and detected in the last year or two. Pretty vague on the exact report without sifting thru to find it. They obviously have had a major problem with meth and are trying to do something about it (I guess)? (then again where hasnt major city wise)

^ Do they have something like we do here in AUS with the pseudo watch scheme? We have to provide ID like a drivers licence to get it and it goes onto some database or some shit.

I seriously agree with this quote they banned psuedophed without an rx from a doc in my state & I literally go to the doc just to get an rx b/ my congestion is so bad
