New York is revoking the gun permits of people on anxiety meds

Maybe they should revoke the gun permits of people who use alcohol as well.
a point could be made for revokin guns from all sorts of groups of people but inherently these would probably ALL be wrong (i cant think of a scenario where i could be in favor of revokin certain peoples guns but i wont say there might be some logical instances that exist that id get behind)

He who would trade liberty for some temporary security, deserves neither liberty nor security
just figured id quote that cuz its a great and true quote
Good, sounds like a heaping dose of common sense to me.
would you tell us/expand on as to why you think this is good and are in favor of it
They should restrict this to people who have severe mental health issues, bipolar, manic, etc.
im not sure they should

and i know that wasnt your quote that i quoted for truth but if you believe in what Benjamin Franklin said how does this idea you have stack up with that?
Having a little depression and anxiety shouldn't bar you from owning a gun.
no it should not
You either ban them in the entire nation or not at all.
does banning other things work? prostitution? drugs?

but guns probably shouldnt be a free for all.

gun laws are tough b/c it really makes you step back and take a look at society. whether your for more gun control or less or whatever i think it should be accepted that our society needs work and many many things need to be evaluated n addressed if we wish to live in a safer world/life

If everyone had a gun people would think twice about fucking with someone.
im for the most part pro gun. n although you didnt outright say it im not convinced society would be safer if all that was done was to arm each n every individual, i dont really like it when gun advocates use this argument/make this claim. i dont think its correct and i think it kinda undermines the legitimacy of the pro gun arguement

http://www.city-data.com/crime/crime-Tombstone-Arizona.html

Notice how they haven't had any murders lately? Just increased assaults and burglary. Not to sound prejudice or anything but that could just be a border control problem.

are you saying its mexicans commiting all these assualts and burglaries?

but i find it unlikely all this crime was being committed by mexicans/hispanics. the towns demographics are ~87%white and ~24%hispanic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tombstone,_Arizona (i know those %s dont add up but thats the way it was on other sources too i guess you can hit mulitple boxes on census or however they measure those things) i mean sure maybe the small % of the population does have a higher proportion of crime, then again maybe it doesnt but i doubt its
because of these peoples ethnicity if thats what was being implied. tho maybe it wasnt perhaps you were referring to secuirity issues along the boarder all over the SW, maybe you were i dunno

but also guns play roles in assaults and burglaries, guns can help people kill someone just as they can help someone assult or rob people.

But most of what your tAlking about could be avoided if someone would teach kids from an early age how to handle and respect guns.

YES!

but not only that but how to handle n respect the concept of community, respect other people, situations and emotions that are all just a part of everyday life. i believe attempting to do these types of things might have a more positive impact on guns, gun violence, other gun crimes and our society in general personally

I agree with the point you were trying to make, but that's such a bullshit ranking. There's no way that Texas (#5) is freer than Colorado (#16) or California (#37). Texas is practically a police state!

im not sure man, i mean aside from draconian drug laws and lots of lingering racial inequalities (which granted are not indicative of a free society) i can very easily see Texas as being one of the more free'er states (whatever that suppossed to mean, i didnt read the whole PDF but i know they went on to somewhat attempt to explain it)

So you're gonna listen to that article which has no real foundation to it, as oppose to someone who has lived in NYC his entire life?

I live in New York, friend. Whereas you live in Cali. Take my word over that article, us NY'ers do not want an overreaching government. We are extremely proud and supportive of states rights and individual freedoms.
If your supportive of individuals freedom your really living in the wrong city man. I mean come on...Stop and frisk is one of the most unconstitutional laws ever created. Not to mention those radiation scanners they have on the streets trying to catch someone with a gun. Don't even get me started on that 16-oz soda limit bullshit.

:) that made me laugh

ive never been to NYC but the stop and frisk is definately a very scary and fucked up law, i understand how fucked up 9/11 was but thats crazy to strip peoples liberties away like that

didnt know bout the radiation thing but thats pretty intense

Stop and Frisk IS bullshit. Also, the soda ban was recently lifted. So that is no longer in effect.

Our laws may say one thing but trust me, if you stop any NY'er, many of us are liberal and left-leaning, very defensive and supportive of our rights and individual freedoms.

Nobody here, at least in the 5 boroughs, wants a big government.

^Yeah I know you're nice left-leaning people like we are, but New York (and California for that matter) are definitely big government states. Economic regulations, taxes....more libertine stances on same-sex marriage and drug policy do not a small government make . Guliani and Bloomberg in particular have had some worrying thoughts on what the municipal government should and shouldn't be able to do (though obviously New York requires a much more extensive government, 'cause the city's got issues they don't have over in Baker).

I will agree that the list was of questionable value beyond libertarian party propoganda, but in general it was on the right track. Here's one just for economic policy. The scope of Government and regulation in states like California and New York are off the charts compared to Colorado or Montana. That's not saying bigger government/limiting freedoms is always bad, like say texting while driving laws, cyclists having to wear helmets, or the transfat ban (but some folk don't like those things).

And as for my liking to bitch about NY compared to CA, a pack of cigs costs like twice as much thither as hither. And that's not cool.

I've said this elsewhere, and I haven't been showed a list of disputed freedoms, but among the most important of these are drug freedom and reproductive freedom. I think the state of Arkansas (#3) recently passed the most restrictive abortion law in the country. And likewise, many of these "free" states have no qualms about imprisoning a significant percentage of their residents for drug behavior. How does gun and tax freedom rank above the freedom to do whatever you like with your own body?

I agree with you, numbers.

That said, I think the concern of government is the cumulative effect of legalizing drugs, a la fostering degeneracy or a move away from capitalism, the latter of which I think is going to happen anyways.

i wasnt tryin to imply it should

'freedom' is difficult to measure n it def seems as tho the people who made that pdf did in fact put gun n tax freedoms over the right to do whatever one wishes w/ thier own body,

def not agreein with that

I understand, and I think that should definitely be illegal. I think the great majority of the overall population doesn't, though.

This is a strange conversation being held by a bunch of afficiandos of illicit substances. For me, there is no compromise on unfettered individual liberty. If you harm someone else, pay the consequences, otherwise, who cares?

I, for one, do not indulge in illicit substances. I think you might better understand the preventive measures lawmakers are trying to take if you look at the recent past, most notably being the Newton massacre.

^I generally appreciate your posts, though I would hope you don't assume my ignorance regarding America's ongoing gun violence. I wish more people on a drug focused largely on illegal drugs could appreciate the similarities between the desire for lifting sanctions on molecules perceived as dangerous and the desire to maintain the legality of weapons that others find important. I don't own guns, but I respect those that do.

Im keeping my guns and xanax. The gun ban hammer comes down in md in oct so md'ers stock up on +10 round mags, pistol grips for a shotgun, and so on.

Pistol grip on a shotgun? That seems stupid.

The stock already has a feature to acomodate the trigger hand.

You're not supposed to fire it from under your arm.

The updated article states that he got his pistols and permit back. I`m glad to hear his property was returned because that was ridiculous. Reading this scares me. Amherst is 10 minutes away from me.

I get that folks want some kind of response from the recent shootings,I really do. But these new laws don`t do much. New York wants Doctors to snitch on their patients and tell the police if they think the patient might be a danger to themselves or others. Besides breaking doctor/patient confidence there is also the question of what is deemed "dangerous behavior". Case in point: when I was 19 I went to the doctor and started on Paxil due to some depression. Less than a year later I stopped taking it and have been fine ever since. I`m 32 now. Should I be looking for a letter in my mail box terminating my pistol permit because I may still be a "threat"? I find that absolutely idiotic. Plus how many people will now not seek treatment because they don`t want the chance for their property to be taken away?

The NY SAFE law also states that magazines holding over 10 rounds are illegal and won`t be grandfathered in. This won`t prevent shootings either,it only appeases soccer moms, those in office looking to get re-elected,anti-gunners and the people that don`t know much about guns. Example: I have a .22 rifle for target shooting and fun plinking. Having a magazine that holds 25 or 30 rounds adds to the fun of spending a day shooting outside. Limiting down to 10 rounds won`t stop a crazy dude from shooting people,he`ll just reload his weapon a few more times. The new law states that you can have a 10 round mag but based on the honor system you may only put 7 rounds in the magazine. Are you kidding me? What a joke. I swear this feels like they`re just trying to bust the balls of gun owners with this one.

In NY state in order to get a pistol permit(I`m not even talking about a concealed carry permit) you under go a year long background check by a FBI agent. The agent talks to your friends, family and co-workers/bosses. And you need 4 people to vouch for you on paper, then they have their backgrounds checked. If they find any crimes or history of mental illness with you or the 4 people who vouched for you,you won`t get the permit. Then you have the safety courses to go through as well. You get finger printed and have a chat with a Judge to explain why you`d like to own a pistol.
If you`re able to jump through all of those flaming hoops and you wind up with a pistol permit, you deserve it. This NYSAFE law`s ability to check you`re mental health after you`ve gotten your permit is not only a invasion of privacy but totally redundant.

^I know what you mean about NY's onerous permitting process. I didn't even bother when I lived there: I just bought a shotgun (no permit needed) and a submachine gun with a rifle barrel that I converted to a pistol barrel from parts I bought online.

I'm very pro gun, but I disagree with you about the futility on mag capacity limits. In both the Arizona and Connecticut mass shootings, the shooter's kill rate was slowed by the need to change mags. This resulted in additional people surviving the shootings.

Yea a pistol grip just shortens the overall length, its basically meant to be fired like a whippit gun from the waist. Plus unless youre shooting slugs you dont need great aim. Esp with birdshot. Md is going to start sucking like ny when it comes to gun laws. Having a smg with a short barel wouldd make it a short barel rifle which warrants a 200 buck class 3 tax stamp from the atf. Better be careful with that thing ;) well it could be an sbr depending on configuration, but i dont know without seeing it. Ive always wanted to get an sbr in rifle caliber with a supressor and aac just came out with a gun called the honey badger. It fires the 300 blackout cartridge subsonic. Check it out on you tube. Its not available yet prolly bc its select fire but i read that you would need 3 taxx stamps. One for the sbr, one for the integral supressor and one for the outter can. Its such a sick gun. --23536 : what kind of smg did you get?
