We all love the photo contest (well, a lot of us do). There are also a digital arts contest and a 2-D design contest. I think we need more!

Post your ideas for a contest theme, as well as the specifics of the contest such a rules, length of time for submissions, etc. After we get a few (hopefully), I'll make a poll (joy! i get to make a poll =D ), and we will have a competition for competition threads ;). Then the winner will be started as a contest. That isn't to say that you can't start a contest of your idea on your own, in fact that would be awesome, but I thought this might generate some cool ideas, as well as assess where the greatest interest and hopefully participation will lie.

For instance, I'll throw an idea of my own out, just to show you all what I mean:

I already started a thread for posting movies that you made. (linky)Most people have the option of recording video on their digital cameras, so it isn't much of a leap from taking photos to taking video. Well, there hasn't been an overwhelming influx of user-created videos, so I don't think that a contest along those lines would work too well. I think that this is because it involves a good deal more work than just snapping a photo, because you need to shoot all the video and edit it too, and there is not the competitive element of the photo contests. So, my idea is to have a competition of videos that are only single shot, perhaps with a time limit of 30 seconds or thereabouts. The idea is to basically take a photograph that incorporates motion and/or sound and any other elements that are not achievable through a photograph alone by using video. For instance, one can take a photo of a busy street corner in a city, and communicate the message, but it would be made even more vivid perhaps if you could see the cars moving, hear the horns honking, see the clouds moving across the sky.

So the idea is basically the same as the photo contest, where a theme is given and entries are submitted that interpret that theme and try to capture it, only instead of photos being entered, short 30 second video clips are entered.

I already explain this in the other thread, but you can host your videos on youtube or even photobucket, so hosting shouldn't be an issue as most people have photobucket accounts anyway. There are also lots of programs available for video editing so you can add music or title screens or cool transitions to your entry. Windows usually comes with a video editing program, and Adobe premier and Ulead Video Studio also work well and are available to a resourceful person (;)).

Anyway, you get the idea. Use this thread to post your own ideas, or express your opinions on the ideas and structure of others contest suggestions, especially with regard to whether or not you feel you would participate in any of the proposed contests.

So c'mon with it, BL! Remember, Second Opinion, as well as the arts content it is a home to, is only as good as your contributions make it!

I hope to see some cool ideas. :)

Create an avatar competiteon

How about a creation of an avatar comp. Maybe the only criteria being that you have to have created it yourself or somehow edited it, and that it is suitable to be used on Bluelight as an avatar (max 50x50 pixels or 9.8kb).

It could be as cropping and resizing a picture.
eg

marijuanaleafeq9.gif

=

marijuanaleafaasr4.gif

Edit: Ok this isnt such a good example but use your imagination :)

Or, using the appropriate software, you could edit a gif.
eg I found this gif in the lounge..

Fighting-Cat.gif

fightingcataaaq6.gif

Or you could find a Jpeg and animate it into a gif...

gremlinscarar4.gif

(wait for him)

(ZOOM!)

Something else I have done in the past is take digital stills from a movie using Microsoft movie maker and animate them with photoshop. I dont have one appropriate on hand without making one?

This idea was spawned from the original idea for a 'create an animated .gif' thread. This would be more time consuming having bigger file sizes allowable and would be a pain for me on dial up internet!

Yes? No?

I think this is a great idea! I have a few ideas about how we could run it, too. I think it would be cool to find someone who wants to change their avatar and would be willing to commit to using the contest winning entry as their avatar for a reasonable period. They could also choose the theme that they want for their avatar, thus giving us a theme for the round. For instance, I could request a new avatar that somehow incorporated pennywise the clown. It is definitely challenging, given the pixel and kb restrictions, but it could still be pretty damn fun imo. Just look at the avatar that lacey k made for lilczey:

avatar95578_13.gif

That's just an example, but I think it shows how creative you can get with avatars, even with the restrictions. I'm all for it, but I want to wait to get some other suggestions and see if there is any response. That's not to say, though, Klue, that I don't want you to start it if you want. I'll make the poll for you and all that shit if you don't wanna wait.

Great idea! Keep em' comin! :D

Troll of the Month.
Funnies Meme.
Highest Power Level.
Biggest Bong Toke.

Although I rather see a friendly and fun, non competitive way to show and share art.

Also, what do people think of collaborative projects? You know, like a bunch of people all working on the same thing, like a mural of some sort or something like that?

Similarly, if you wanted to keep the competitive aspect, you could have two or more teams of people working on a project and then submitting the final project for voting to see whose project wins.

Any thoughts?

idk man, those all seem like they may be more suitable for the lounge, although I encourage you to start some of those threads in there, I think they would be pretty funny. :)

Why compete? Why not have it be a culmination of the talented folks of this forum. Work together and collaborate, rather than focusing on what people subjectively feels is the best.

The competition isn't a necessary element. I really like the idea of everyone working together on a mural or something. The problem is getting people to participate, and making it competitive seems to get people motivated (even though the "prize" is nothing more than perhaps bragging rights ;) although no one brags anyway).

It's just a matter of finding ways of getting people to participate. That's why I'm making a discussion thread instead of just starting a bunch of contests. I wanted to try and gauge the interest in the contests and start one that has a better chance of succeeding (ie, having ppl participate and contribute).

yeah the color war was cool for that : some team action

collaborative projects is a great idea pennywise

complete the drawing in the lounge is great but it focus only on humor and its done without effort or artistic care
but a more art oriented one could be cool too

as for a group project that we could all work on different part of : a movie
making a cover art, different scene done by different people, creating the soundtrack, someone building some drum track, someone else putting some bass, someone else putting another instrument, ...editing, re-editing, re-mixing the music...

building it piece by piece

^wow, i like that idea too!

sweeeet. I can't wait to get started on some of this stuff, but I still want to wait to get some more ideas and discussion so we have a solid jumping-off point. Off to a great start, though. :)

i smell a sore loser:|

my problem with your idea is that those types of threads get huge!!! fast. and then for (some) people they are not even accessable to veiw because there is 20 pages of peoples art and 20 pieces of art per page.

it needs a break down. AND the contests do that.
once its over a new thread gets started. knowbody wants to look through 29 pages of shit, do they?

i mean i have dial up, (not by choice) i had to move where there is NO cable on the poles whatso ever. so my TV is satilite, and my internet is 56k.

i mean sometimes i have to wait 5 mintutes for the photo contest polling to load.

i know this doesnt apply to 98% of you because you live in civilzation. but i like smaller threads....

I am not a sore loser, I am a great loser, due to my vast experience at sucking. I don't submit any art because, I don't like the people that censored my art here in the past, and as I have stated, I think we should share, encourage and discuss art, not subjectively compare it. I rather see everyone a winner, by enhancing the art community, rather than stooping to contests with no real meaning other than inconsequential bragging rights.

Most people have broadband now. Welcome to the 21st century. As much as I feel bad for people on dial-suck the number of users makes restructuring things for the specific subset of low-bandwidth users less than feasible. Although splitting submissions and discussions for contests does make sense, to have a cohesive presentation of the competition.

Please no name calling. Thanks.

The sore loser thing was just a joke. i agree with you.
but maybe if you could find a way to stucture this "collaberation" in a way that everyone can participate, see the final product, and then move on to another project, for group participation.

like, maybe if we had themes, but with out the polling.
like a weekly art sharing thread?!
you create artwork based on a theme (with very, VERY flexible medium requirments) and just have everyone post somthing.

than eveyone gets comliments, and the next week , we get a new theme.

or somthing like that. im just saying even if i had boadband a 20 page thread SUCKS! pain and simple it does...

so i like your suggestion, i would just like to see weekly or even bi-weekly structure.
if that makes sense

Collaboration FTW. I think we could churn out some very interesting products.

Also some kind of design contest. I don't know exactly how it would work but you could use any medium you want. I thought of this when we where trying to help out IAT out with his(?) wine label. I thought it was very interesting to see the different ways. people saw things.
Some themes for this could be:
Labels / Logos
Snowboards / Skateboards / Surfboards
Ads for any type of consumer item e.g. clothes, makeup, cars, fast food.
Clothes
Cars
Weapons
Movie posters
Event posters / flyers
All kinds of stuff!

Calendar of scantily clad ladies?

I'm curious as to how this suggestion could be translated into either a contest or a collaborative project? If you are serious about your suggestion, then by all means please elaborate. :) Just try to keep it constructive. TIA. :)

I like this idea as well (lol i seem to like almost all the ideas). I was thinking of something along these lines, also because of the wine label thread. Other topics that I thought of that might be cool were to design a pack for marijuana cigarettes and other weed products if it were ever legalized, and maybe some designs of BL merchandise like T-shirts and bumper stickers and such.

Also, IAMTHOUGHTS, I like your idea too (duh) :).
