The federal government now has more control over the way tobacco is marketed. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act went into effect June 22nd. It comes one year after Congress gave the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate the tobacco industry.

The law is designed to make sure tobacco manufacturers are more responsible with their advertising.

Smokers will no longer see the words "light," "low" or "mild" on their cigarette boxes.

That's because the new law bans words that can mislead smokers into thinking they are choosing a healthy product.

Marlboro Lights are now called Marlboro Gold.

Most cigarette boxes are color coded now. For example, orange packs are the ultra lights and green packs are menthols.

Under the new law, the tobacco industry can no longer sponsor any athletic or cultural event. And retailers are required to check identification for any customer who looks younger than 27.

KPSP Local 2's Mobile Journalists Arti Nehru and Eugene Mena have more in this video report.

what do you think? anti-tobacco lobbyists will start saying that brighter, more attractive colors attract underage smokers. and why not, if "light" is construed misleading despite the more than prominent warning.

Does this mean Marlboro can no longer sponsor Ferrari?

And TBH, when I started smoking 10 years ago (been quit over a year now though) I really did think "Light" meant "Lite" -- very misleading but hey I was 17

Camel Lights are now Camel Blues...

My Parliament Ultra Lights are still Ultra Lights.

:! Products can't be named certain ways? What the hell are we coming to?

Just more ways to CONTROL things. Wasting time and millions of our dollars passing virtually meaningless laws that really wont do a damn thing in the long run.

All this while there were never laws passed to make sure that if there was an oil leak, there would be a way to shut it off......

Who is running this shop anyway???

Umm in Australia ciggerette sponsorship of sports or events or tv or anything for that matter has been banned since the mid-90s. I cant beleive americans are nieve to how the media manipulates them and there choices.... You are the most advertised too society for a reason... because you are allllll easily influenced by it!!!!!

Re the naming: Do you honestly beleive that the ciggerette companys DONT use that terminology to influence you purchase? Are you all seriously THAT DUMB. The amount of times ive heard a smoker say "Im not as a bad as him, he smokes full strength, i smoke lights".

Ciggerette makers have been selling the same product for years and have been taken to court on various occasions for misleading advertising. It is, and has been, common knowledge about all these tricks and techniques to get people to smoke for MANY years now. The holy grail is advertising to teens by stelth, as a healthy young person is the key demographic for building and mainting a brand. Brand is everything to smoking companys, everything down to the font they use has been market researched and analysed a million times before it gets put on the packet....

Its simply because the tobacco industry has such a stranglehold - like the alcohol industry/3 tier monopoly (bud light isnt even beer ffs) - on the government with its backing and sponsorship of political partys that these laws have not come in any sooner..

Welcome to 1995 America!

This is exactly true. This is advertising 101 man. Are you fucking dumb? Its amount making a brand recognisable, and putting ideas in our head that mean good things when we think of a product.

This might not be true for an older person, or a long time smoker who choose smokes based on personal preference. But ciggerette companys dont care nearly as much about that demographic (who are already hooked) as they do the new customer.

A cigarette is a cigarette to a non-smoker. Light doesn't make it any better. What's it matter if you've never smoked them? You're saying people start smoking because cigarette companies make light cigs?

Saying they can't cell Light cigarettes is like saying Coke can't sell Caffeine Free Diet Coke (which is horrible by the way, I don't know why they do make it).

It's stupid and pointless.

I'm personally selling bright blue and pink LIGHT cigarettes with NO ADDITIVES, at the local Junior High Schools. It's not the end of the world Fuck!

I agree that coke shouldnt be allowed to advertise as diet either. that implys its good for u..

Light, implys "less harm" no matter which way you look at it. Otherwise why does it matter what its called? Why do you care???

when has the quality of the packaging a drug comes in ever changed a person's resolve to acquire the drug? people are going to keep smoking. i never understood why they don't just crack down on the quality control instead to ensure that the product is not cut or laced with shit like ammonia in it.

forbidding the cigarette companies from adulterating their cigarettes with excess chemicals means it would take a bit more effort to make each cigarette and as a result raise the cost of cigarettes which would most certainly stop people from chain smoking em or giving them away like loose change.

a different looking box isn't going to make a person desire it any less but forcing the companies to raise the price will definitely make a teen think twice about wasting their hard-earned money on it

Good point about the tained cigs. Great point actually. Ciggerette companys dont even tell us whats in them, because its a 'trade' secret. I cant think of another product where such an excuse is acceptable...

It's seems like everything else besides parliament has already switched over to the colors. Ultra lights are still ultra lights like ^^^^^^^^ said.
What's gonna happen to black and milds though? That's making their brand name illegal? Seems a little much doesn't it?

yea, could i get those packs of reds plz?
reds damn well better still be reds. marlboro reds are fucking immortal. the only goddamn cigarettes i will ever buy. absolute tobacco perfection, other than a good cigar or a pipe.
