The federal government now has more control over the way tobacco is marketed. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act went into effect June 22nd. It comes one year after Congress gave the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate the tobacco industry.
The law is designed to make sure tobacco manufacturers are more responsible with their advertising.
Smokers will no longer see the words "light," "low" or "mild" on their cigarette boxes.
That's because the new law bans words that can mislead smokers into thinking they are choosing a healthy product.
Marlboro Lights are now called Marlboro Gold.
Most cigarette boxes are color coded now. For example, orange packs are the ultra lights and green packs are menthols.
Under the new law, the tobacco industry can no longer sponsor any athletic or cultural event. And retailers are required to check identification for any customer who looks younger than 27.
KPSP Local 2's Mobile Journalists Arti Nehru and Eugene Mena have more in this video report.

what do you think? anti-tobacco lobbyists will start saying that brighter, more attractive colors attract underage smokers. and why not, if "light" is construed misleading despite the more than prominent warning.

Products can't be named certain ways? What the hell are we coming to?
