New Arts Contests Discussion

  • Thread starter Thread starter SA
  • Start date Start date
i had this idea in the car today:

for those awsome pics that just dont 'fit' anywhere, we could have a "most popular image" thread as well. all inclusive--any image thats 700x700, and maybe on a theme....

id do the thread, if that sounds cool, if not thats fine too.

then wed have a:
photo contest
edited photo contest
2-d design contest
photoshop + theme contest

AND a w/e the fuck you want to enter thread. (?)

also i am convinced that explaining the art would be a bad idea.

you have very valid points. i noticed a lot of intricacies in my own work that id rather not explain.

^
i think having people offer explanations for their pieces is an interesting idea. it's occurred to me too. but the unique ways people have interpreted themes so far has convinced me otherwise, so i gotta agree with alasdair and what others have said.

yea i totally do--today i was asked by a close friend to explain a painting... and well, he had interpreted it ENTIRELY differently than i intended... which i think is a GOOD thing.

i changed the rule to optional.

what about the idea for 5 coordinated thread?

lets set a schedule down for each contest.

heres my idea:

photo contest stays as is; we need to set established dates, or at least clarify.

2-d design: any original 2-d artwork is acceptable. no photographs. dates need to be 'set in stone' (ive given this a LOT of thought)

photoshop contest: dates need to be coordinated, all misfit photos go in there.

I think the lack of participation in the photo contest the last time around was because of the theme. I don't have pictures of street performers just laying around, and nowhere to take a picture of one. Now had the topic been held late summer after hemp fest, com. fest, and pride week I would. ;)

I say just let them run their course and if they survive they do, and if they don't, let them die.

I see no end in the near future for the photography contest; I truly just believe it was a harder theme.

I don't think the digital contest or the photoshop contest are doing to well though. Correct me if I am wrong.

^ I agree with all you've said. I think that the photo contest is always going to be more popular, because everyone takes pictures, and while being a good photographer is a difficult skill to master, it doesn't necessarily guarantee a win. With the photoshop contests, it requires a fairly recent project and somewhat specialized knowledge, because most people weren't using that 10 years ago. But with the photo contest, I just entered a pic that I took close to 25 years ago with a disposable camera.

the hard theme was my initial thought also, but anyway, time will tell.

One contest per time period. Allows for focus on one topic.

Totally able to have different types of competition going on, but one at a time.
I disagree. We have artists of different mediums here as members of BL. Photography, in the context of such a short contest time - one week - is an easier contest to enter, IMHO. For all of the (other arts) contests to work to their best capacity, I believe several things have to change:

- their running time has to be increased to at least two weeks
- works already showcased in the BL gallery or elsewhere should be allowed in
- rules across all contests should really be carbon copies of one another, save for a change or two or and addition or two here and there. This way, people can concentrate less on the different regulations of each contest and more on their entries

I also agree with the theme, more than anything, as being responsible for the number of entries in the last (and others) photography contest.

The most spontaneous contest out of the ones already started is the Photoshop one, IMO. The rest should be able to pull works out of portfolios, galleries, as well as thin air.

I agree on the theme issue. I had no street performer photos to use.

the contest is 9 days long so you can MAKE art.... why not just have it every 2 days if were only dipping into our portfolios...?
A) it doesnt matter if what ive posted is old--old stuff is allowed too!

That's all I was responding to. You implied that we shouldn't just be 'dipping into our portfolios' for entries, when that's what you've done as well, and it's 'allowed'.

You didn't do anything 'wrong', I just said I wasn't entering anything this round. Not sure why you think that reflects on you.

I don't see where anyone is giving you shit in that thread at all. I think you take things too personal when they're not meant to be. :\

As far as does 'SA get this much shit when choosing his themes'? My problem was that you changed it upon opening the contest, once again, for your own personal reasons. I just think that's not a good way to run a contest. If you give people a theme a week ahead of time, stick with it. : \

That's just my opinion.

It might be best for the contributers to come up with a list of themes. That way it isn't just the creator pulling out themes that work for them.

I have invited theme suggestions more than once in the photography contest.

Yep and your doing a great job mate.

Sometimes I find its not possible to get involved in every one, street performers was one for eg........but thats cool.........stuff I can add to others wont such as sport.

All contests, especially the newer ones, are constant works in progress. Even the more established photography contest rules are not necessarily set in stone forever and may (and probably will) be changed as time goes on. If there are issues with any of the rules, bring them to the moderators please, not simply post "this sucks" types of posts. More than anything, I think a lot of patience is required from all sides. Patience and giggles. If anyone is ever short on giggles, just see MazDan, as he's surely hijacked a barge full of them somewhere. Endless supply he has! Even felixthehousekat can't compete.

;) :D
