Negatives of Opiates

Like many of us, I wish I stayed within the realm you are in with opiates; 12 years later and still truckin' with ye olde monkey on back one way or another :\ Staying within the recreational zone is a major slope IMO, if not impossible for some of us

Good posts by sonic and 6/7.

Keep in mind though, that most of the issues people are bringing up are due to chronic use. Using sparingly, once or twice a week, wouldn't present them.

false. Even using heroin one day I could feel a negative effect in how I perceived my body (ie more painful).

Actually I think that is a valid statement. Psychologically, likely based in shame because of the stigma associated with opiates, people can/could develop negative self esteem, guilt etc.. That would make one feel worse.

There are many aspects to pain.

I have been using for many years now. I do find that in some ways the loss of endogenous opiates cannot be replaced by exogenous opiates....actually they could of course but would require ever escalating doses that would get pretty hard for a doctor to justify in the absence of terminal illness.... so when i lower my dose a bit I get sore joints. There is actually a theory out there that basically states that long trm chronic opiate useage actually creates a pain syndrome. Endogenous opiates do a myriad of things in the body that one would never think off (Until w/d..which is why I think you know what I mean%) ) Don't recall where i read that..heroin helper maybe...erowid..someplace like that i think but it may have been in a journal as I work in a hospital.

To the OP...there is no perfect drug. Opiates a very far from that I would say if you look at the social pain, poverty, and suffering that goes along with there use. especially in the producing countries.

Fuck..I'm getting way to serious here...I love opiates though8)

wtf who said they ae easy on the body is stupid or just never really done them. i have been taking opiates for 13 years for severe back pain. when i run outa meds i get the sweats relly bad. cant get outa bed, just really bitchy, hurt all over my bones even hurt, i have diahrria and sick at my stomach. i would do anything(well almost) to stop the pain.

Those are withdrawal symptoms. That has nothing to do with them being "hard on the body." Its caused by down regulation of your receptors (your brain getting used to always having the drug) and it creates those physical symptoms when it cant get any of the drug. The pain in your body is not permanent, and is not caused by any physical damage. Its a neurological reaction to a neurological problem. Also, the down regulation is not permanent, so dont try to argue by saying they cause brain damage.

Since opiates do not cause any form of organ or brain damage, they are easier on the body than almost any other drug.

Id check your knowledge before coming in here and saying something so incorrect, and then calling other respected, intelligent members "stupid" or "inexperienced," especially when you have no idea what they have been through personally or how deep their intelligence really is.

Using opiates for 13 years doesnt mean shit. Ive seen addicts who have been using heroin for close to 40 years who know less than a 10 year old about the drug. Length of use does not equal knowledge on the subject, no matter what you think.

Maybe if you took your pills as prescribed then you wouldn't run out or get withdrawls.

Just a thought

If the doctor doesnt give you the meds for the day your suppose to get them refilled then yeah your gonna have some withdrawl going on . i know i do when in the morning when i have to go get my pills refilled , considering its a 2 hour wait at the clinic then another 30 or so to get to the pharmacy and wait for them to be filled .. so dont be so quick to jump the gun .

Opiates can cause organ and brain damage if you overdose.... Thus if you get resuscitated you will have damage; but thats about it...

largest negatives by far are tolerance, dependence, addiction, and the best

Withdrawal.....

^ Wrong again. Actually, youre just confused.

Opiates dont cause that damage. Being unconscious and not getting oxygen causes that damage. It is not a direct effect of the opiates themselves.

I agree, opiates are pretty human-friendly, body-friendly etc. It's what comes with it that's the problem; Supply, withdrawal, tolerance, money (if you don't have insurance). And than there is constipation, sleeplessness, opiate nightmares.

There is more. But overall i think they are relatively easy on the body and safe. They become dangerous when you take more than you should. And I'm not lecturing because i take more than i should but i am very careful and don't do 'Dangerous amounts' of any of my medications. And of course there is addiction and addition is it's own entity, it has it's own soul it seems like. Just like physical pain seems to be it's own entity, so does addiction it seems.

And if your like me and you have daily severe pain and an addiction on top of that, it stinks! But, i wouldn't give them up, not now at least. Do i ever plan on living opiate free intentionally, probably not. They've become a part of me. And I'm not saying that's a good thing. I've kinda accepted that I'm a lifer but i don't know how I'll feel in the future. Some miracle could happen and i give it all up. Likely, NO, plausible, YES

Exactly ^ . My doc told already told me before i went on them that i could potentially be on them for the rest of my life and i was ok with that just as long as i dont have to endure the pain i gotta go through on a daily basis .. however im always open to a taper plan if things got too high , or switching meds as well ..

but for me the downside is definatly constipation , it fucking sucks tryin to drop a deuce that feels like a fucking pinecone then lookin in the toilet to see a shitload of blood ..then having to coat your pucker hole with vasaline a couple times a week ... then do it all over again a few days later .. and it has actually made me very concious of what i eat now , which isnt all that bad nothing wrong with a healthier diet , however i know somedays i crave fastfood . and thats the #1 bowel blocker right there ..

Negatives of opiates? After you do them for long enough and then stop life becomes dull, depressing, and meaningless.

A rare complication of vicodin and maybe other opiates is hearing loss. Probably you have to have a vulnerability for this to occur. The mechanism isn't understood and I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out something else is the culprit, like apap. Since it is in medical literature I thought I'd throw it out.
