[National] Federal Election - 21st August 2010

Abbott is now talking about supporting the NBN obviously because the country independants want a better coverage than his lame duck wireless network. As long as there is not filter every one should be happy. Well except those public servants who'll lose their jobs under a Liberal government.

Can you tell me what the NBN will actually deliver? Is it mainly for the country towns?

As far as I'm concerned, I'm more than happy with my broadband access.

My coalition bet is looking good at present, however you never know how the independants will vote so I'm thinking of trading out for a slightly smaller win.

They are hoping to roll out internet speeds 100 times faster than we have at the moment, to 98% of the country. It will put Australia right up there with other countries that are already rolling out those high speeds. Won't make a great deal of difference to browsing the way most sites are at the moment, but websites will be able to be more graphic orientated and when downloading big files like movies, music. You can already 'hire' a movie from Bigpond where you download it and it's available to you for 3 days, video shops will probably eventually become redundant.

Is it really necessary? I'd rather they spent the money on the basics for the moment before spending money we don't have.

It's like buying a HD TV. It's great to have, but I spend my coin on food, electricity and other necessities before splashing out on what the Jones' have.

For the average Joe who is downloading porn, not a lot, but for data heavy industries it would have enormous benefits. The health sector would become futuristic with surgeons able to perform operations via robotics in real time on a patient in country Queensland, while sitting in his surgery in Sydney. This isn't science fiction, it just currently lacks the infrastructure to make it viable becuase of severe lag time. The same could be applied to education with country students having access to proper broadband speeds. The economic savings alone with this application would be enormous, and that is before some smart cookie stars thinking up new and wonderful ways to utilise these speeds.

I'm pretty sure Labor will win. At this point it looks like 73 seats each. All 3 independents are obviously keen for the NBN, though it wouldn't be surprising if Abbott steals Labor's most popular policy to win them over. However both Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor (who has worked towards a push for renewable energy) think Climate Change is an extremely important issue. It's going to look pretty fucking dumb if Abbott all of a sudden starts believing in it in an attempt to win them over.

Oakeshott was all for an emissions trading scheme so that may count against Labor but they've got to look like a better option when Abbott blatantly doesn't believe Climate Change exists. So that leaves Katter (who seems like an absolute nutjob) and is a climate sceptic.

Although the independents have decided to work as a team and decide who they will support if Labor keeps 73 seats, they could conceivably leave Katter out of the picture if Adam Bandt of the Greens sides with Labor which is looking pretty likely.

I don't think the fact that all three Independents are former Nationals really counts for much 'cause they obviously were disappointed enough with them to leave and strike out on their own and all 3 think Barnaby Joyce is a fucking knob.

Anyway this quote from Katter has got to be my favourite from the whole election:

‎"Many times I've gone to bed as a cockle doodle doo and woke up the next morning as a feather duster - this might be one of those times," Mr Katter said.

WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT MEAN?

Yep, I've had laparoscopic surgery and specialists are already using the internet to do this but it would mean amazing things for the health sector. And education, yeppas, video conferencing for business wirelessly on phones.

I've had a good look at the phone line that runs down my street a couple of times and talked to the technicians. It's all German Bakelite connections from the 1940's, not an optic fibre in sight. Apparently in some rural areas they are not going to lay optic fibres but use radio to get internet out to the bush. I'm lucky I can get ADSL2+ on my connection so it won't effect me for much but it would still take an hour or more to download a movie from Bigpond movies.

Indeed it does. I mean for the sort of things I do online, the connection I have is fine for now :)

If the Liberal Party get in power it will likely end in a double dissolution with Greens making up the balance of power. Liberals can't rule unless they're allowed to fuck the population.

I predicted Hung Parliament early last week and to be honest I was more than half joking at the time but I did give it a thought and I was scared. The problem is that this garbage will not abate rapidly and by the time it does the whole mess will stay teetering on a nervous knife edge.

These are going to be frustrating times

If there is one good thing to come out of this election is that I learn there is an electorate, (and a town I think) called Batman.

Cooool! 'Oh yeah, I live in Batman' :D

It's in Melbourne and named after the explorer John Batman who basically found and recommended the area where Melbourne is and organised to rent it off the Aboriginals there. I know this because first time I went to Melbourne I was looking at a map and wondering why there is so many Batman Streets and a Batman Park.

Some politician should have changed his name before the election to Bruce Wayne. Surely that would have won some votes :)

Also according to re-reading about him just then on wikipedia when he found the site and decided it was a good place for a settlement he actually originally called it 'Batmania.' Haha so much cooler than Melbourne.

Why do I think the independents are probably going to go with the party that gets along with the Greens the best? Think about it, Liberals will have a bitch fight on their hands every time they want something passed in the senate wheres Labour usually has the Greens support (not all the time though but more than the liberals).. But then, that could be a good thing. Depends I guess on what they want and how much the independents want their own policies pushed through parliament and the senate..

Plus Labor's policies are more in line with a lot of the points the Independents have outlined as important to them personally.
